Silent Hill: Restless Dreams

INTENTION AND EDITING DETAILS:
Silent Hill was not a bad film in my opinion. It was a decent film with a better film hidden underneath a few bad lines of dialogue and some executive meddling. The goal of this edit was to create a more focused version of the film by eliminating the Christopher subplot as well as silly lines of dialogue that dragged the film down.
CUTLIST:
- All scenes with Christopher removed throughout the film.
- Removed Rose saying “ashes” when she realizes the snow isn’t actually snow.
- Added a flashback after Rose is attacked by the grey children in the alley: Rose and Sharon in the field, Rose at the gas station, driving up to Silent Hill/getting pulled over and crashing. Numerous cuts throughout, changed to black and white.
- Removed Rose saying “Fuck you, you stupid cop” when she and Cybil discover the drop off in the road.
- Removed a shot of Cybil raising her gun (she does so twice).
- Removed Cybil yelling “Stay where you are! Stop!” at the lying figure/armless man.
- Removed brief flash of students harassing Alessa then Rose finds her desk.
- Removed shot of Colin the janitor in the washroom when Rose is running down the stairs.
- Removed Cybil asking “Do you hear that?” when Pyramid Head is approaching her and Rose’s hiding spot.
- Removed “They used to say this place was haunted” exchange while Rose and Cybil are walking to the hotel.
- Removed Rose saying “We have to go to room 111.”
- Shortened hallway search, Anna’s line still intact, Rose’s is not.
- Removed Rose’s “I love my daughter” when Christabella asks her if she is a person of faith.
- Moved shot of Christabella watching Rose and Cybil to the middle of their “Mother is God” chat.
- Removed Cybil clarifying that an “innocent” is a child.
- Removed Cybil telling Rose that Christabella is “killing” her.
- Removed Christabella’s extra “it will.”
- Removed Cybil getting beaten by the miners.
- Plot dump: Removed Christabella’s “You’re weak my dear sister.”
- Plot dump: Removed Christabella’s “We fight the sin not the sinner.”
- Plot dump: Removed the extra shot of Gucci burning his hands. His character is not in this cut, so this shot is not important.
- Removed flash of Dark Alessa leaving Sharon at the orphanage.
- Removed Dark Alessa clarifying that “satisfaction” means “revenge.”
Endings:
- Grey ending: ends much the same way that the film does. Rose wakes up in the church, takes Sharon with her. Cut her phone call to Chris, and fade to black after she drives by the gas station. This ending is recommended for those who have not played the original Silent Hill.
- Blue ending: Using a number of still frames from the film (color corrected to be darker and more blue) we see that Rose and Sharon actually died when the car crashed. Open to interpretation, of course. This ending is recommended for those who have played the original Silent Hill, and especially those who received the “bad”…I mean REALLY “bad” ending.
Credits:
- New end credits sequence constructed to replace the first section of the credits in the original version. This sequence was originally going to be the opening credits, but was moved here to keep the opening of the film more mysterious. There is also a slight variation in the very start of thecredits between the “grey” and “blue” endings.

Silent Hill: Restless Dreams An Aztek643 Fanedit Review
“This film contains scenes of explicit violence and gore that may be considered disturbing and cruel.”
With that as the introduction of the DVD, Aztek makes it clear quickly that he is a fan of the original games, and may be a subtle way of him letting you know that he is going to try his best to serve you a fanedit of Silent Hill that will be closer to the games. He succeeds, whether that opening was his intention or not.
The original Silent Hill movie was written by Roger Avery (Rules of Attraction) and directed by Christopher Gans (Brotherhood of The Wolf). While being lauded as possibly the best videogame adaptation to film yet, it missed quite a few marks with the core fans of Silent Hill. Being a huge Silent Hill fan myself, I left the movie when it opened feeling satisfied and cheated at the same time. While Avery did a good job adapting the theme of Silent Hill, his dialogue felt like leftovers from Pulp Fiction (which he helped to write) and his style of character development was kind of weak. Gans’ direction was fabulous, he did an excellent job of creating the feel of Silent Hill, but ultimately Gans was under the direction of a script that really wasn’t written for his style of directing.
What Aztek has done here is nothing short of amazing. The editor completely took out the entire subplot of the main character’s (Rose) husband (Chris) looking for her in the town. With this gone, the movie becomes SO much more coherent and fluid. It’s amazing how easy this was to follow (although I’m sure it wasn’t easy on Aztek). Without the confusion of Chris adding to the subtext, the story unfolded almost in real-time, allowing the viewer to follow the main plot without having to jump back and forth in between scenes. Very well done.
The movie starts with Rose waking from a car wreck to find her daughter, Sharon, missing. Moving on to the town to find her, we watch in black-and-white flashback form of why Rose brought her to Silent Hill in the first place. In the original, this was done linearly, and with much more unnecessary dialogue and painful-to-watch scenes. The new execution is brilliant. Not only is it shorter, but it also excises the bad acting that came with the original. The whole movie is littered with nice edits here and there. The fabulously ridiculous line “Fuck you, stupid cop” is gone, along with most of the original’s bad dialogue. My only gripe is the Johnny Cash song is still there. However, it’s very forgivable because as I understand it, audio editing is a bitch, and the scene that song is in is necessary to the continuance of events.
So, not only did Aztek provide us with a film that actually feels Silent Hill-y, he also took the time to give us TWO endings! Both of which are amazing, and far, far better than the concocted original. Since both endings differ from the original, I can’t tell you exactly what they are. One ending, called ‘The Blue Ending’, was a completely original idea from the mind of Aztek in which he constructed still frames from the movie and used seperate audio to assemble an ending that any film maker would enjoy and respect. The other ending, called “The Grey Ending”, is a superior edit to the original. Outstanding work.
So my final judgment? This version is the version I will go to when I want to watch this movie again. It’s that good. Gone is the incoherence that was Sean Bean’s character and that never-aged cop. Gone is the overly ridiculous dialogue that plagued the original. In is a refreshing and faster paced Silent Hill that will appeal to fans that wanted to like this movie but couldn’t. I want to personally thank Aztek for this edit, as the way this was done couldn’t have been easy. Thank you.

There isn’t much to add what MonsterCow said. He hit the nail on the head. This is a far superior version to the original release. While still not a scary film it is much more fluid and intelligible.
With that said my only gripe is the “blue ending”. Without trying to spoil anything I didn’t much care for it. Aztek mentions this is for those who are familiar with the game, and that it’s open for interpretation, but this sort of ending in any movie (or book, or television show, or game) is a cop-out. But thankfully there is the “grey ending” which, to me, is more satisifying.

Having watched this edit, i must say that this will be the version of this movie that i will watch from now on. You did a fantastic job. I really enjoyed the flow of the movie and never felt distracted like i did in the original. Also, i loved the commentary. 10 out of 10! Thank you for all your hard work that you put into creating this version of Silent Hill.

I watched this yesturday. Very good job on this. I thought that the story flowed better once you had removed Chris from the movie. I also liked the fact that you included an audio commentary for this. That’s the first time I’ve seen something like that. At first, I didn’t know what to expect from the commentary. But you did a good job on that. Thanks for the hard work that you had with it. And keep it up.

This is a highly improved cut of the original movie! Gone are the father’s story and seach for his family; it only slowed down the movie as a whole. If I would have one complaint, it would be the flashback. It seems way too long, incorporating both the child and mother talk with the police chase is way too much for one flashback, ideal thing would be to place the police chase flashback at another location in the film or cutting the mother and child flashback all together!
All in all 8/10, great editing skills!

Finally got to this last night. I don’t want to rehash everything that has been written previously. The highest compliment that I can give Aztek on this is simply this, you don’t feel a single edit. I could find not a single sign that this movie had been altered. Every transition was great, no tell-tale audio issues, no visual continuity mis-matches, nothing No plot holes left from removing the sub-plot. The result was a movie that fully engaged me. The pacing was excellent and really pulled me in.
I love that he created two endings. I’m not a fan of the Blue ending, but I like that he included it for those that want the movie to go that direction.
If this is a sign of things to come from Aztek463, I cannot wait to see what else he gives us!
