Conan – Man Of War

a TRUE FANEDIT by The Man Behind The Mask

This is Conan the Barbarian, shortened and with the original (amazing) music replaced by Manowar’s songs and intrumentals.
90% of the time the new music is playing without voices nor sound effect, so it looks like a big music video with some dialogue parts from time to time.

INTENTION:
Conan the Barbarian is one of my all time favorit movies.
To me it’s a “complete movie”. Both action packed and contemplative, serious but fun to watch, 80’s cheese but shot with such a sens of realism that even the now outdated special effects still look great IMO (can’t say the same about the Destroyer sequel that, well, destroyed the franchise somehow).
But one of the most memorable things about Conan is the amazing music by Basil Poldouris. Perhaps my favorit score ever recorded for a movie.
Now, my goal with this edit is trying to remove that amazing score and replace it by music by heavy metal band Manowar. This band is a strange phenomenon. It’s a band I found quite silly and ridiculous the first time I heard their songs but, in the end, they have some great catchy songs and very nice feeling for anything sounding “bigger than life”. Simple and direct lyrics about heroes, gods, courage, swords blood and fight. Some of their lastest albums have symphony music that blend nicely with the sound of the guitare and amazing vocal performance by Eric Adams.

EDITING DETAILS:

The new music is playing 90% of the time without voices nor sound effect, so it looks like a big music video with some dialogue parts from time to time.

  2. **OVERVIEW**

    TECHNICAL ASPECTS

    VIDEO:
    Crisp image, absolutely amazing cuts.

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    AUDIO:
Everything falls into place. It’s Manowar! The music guides the images perfectly.
Obviously, a lot of work was put into finding just the right song for every scene.

    Overall:
    5 out of 5 stars

    PRESENTATION:
Nice basic menu. Nothing fancy, just right.

    Overall:
    4 out of 5 stars

    IMPROVEMENT OVER THE ORIGINAL:
This was obviously not meant as an improvement, but a different take on the film.
It takes some getting used to, watching one hour and a half of Conan with almost no dialogue, but it’s a definite must see.

    Overall:
    5 out of 5 stars

FINAL SCORE: 4,5 out of 5 stars

Adds up to a fanedit score of:

  3. This is one awesome fanedit and I bow in deep respect to the creativity of TMBTM. What a great concept. I was for most of it really entertained and I am not a fan of Conan nor Manowar. There could have been more sound effects. I have put my few other complaints in the spoiler. Remarkable. No, it does indeed not replace the original, but it is a whole different thing than the original Conan and truly a fanditing piece of art that has NEVER been done like this before. There should be a name for it, something catchy like “grindhoused”, so I am suggesting “theme scored”.
    9 stars. Great!

    ******SPOILER ALERT*****

The odd music at about 1h was a tad long. The vikings scene did not make much sense to me. The chapters menu is in this presentation kind of obsolete.

  4. I waited in anticipation to watch this when this was first announced and I must say TMBTM did not disappoint. It amazes me that you can take a movie like Conan and turn it basically into a musical. Just shows the creative genius, that Boon mentioned also, that TMBTM posesses. A totally unique and original piece of fan-editing from a very gifted fan-editor. As I mentioned in Jorge’s Blue Skies on Mars, this edit will definitely not be for everyone, but I was thoroughly entertained to say the least..

Video: The video quality was very good, not the best, but pleasing. Some of the footage used from the other films was a tad bit rough. Overall it was fine.
    8 out of 10 stars

Audio: The audio on the other hand was superb. The minimal dialogue that was there was crisp and clear. Also, the music tracks selected were perfect and sounded fantastic. No hiccups whatsoever.
    10 out of 10 stars

Editing: No real flaws here. Everything flowed and very concise as in the story TMBTM was trying to tell. Amazing how the music fit pretty seamlessly to what was happening in the movie. Very well edited, can’t complain.
    10 out of 10 stars

Presentation: Very simple but effective menu screens. I really liked the intro leading into the main menu. The extras were a real nice touch, especially the making of featurette. Liked how you showed some of the effects you seamlessly put into the film. Great!
    9 out of 10 stars

Entertainment: Now this will not replace my DVD copy of this movie, but at least it gives me a very satisfying alternate take on this film. Good Job.
    9 out of 10 stars

FINAL SCORE: 9 out of 10 stars.

Your creativity astounds me and can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Keep up the good work!

  5. This review is based on my opinions and my viewing experience. Nothing is meant as an attack. Spoiler warning.

AUDIO: Everything sounded great except when Conan and Subotai walk into the first city we see, the audio got distorted when the bass notes hit. It may have been my setup, but i have NEVER had this happen before.
    8 out of 10

VIDEO: Image quality was superb on my tv, and it seemed a bit better crisper and clearer than the retail dvd.
    10 out of 10

EDITING: Very well done. Hardly anything stood out as being off, except for one or two audio fades that did not seem as smooth as they could have been. The footage from other films blended in very good all things considered and did not seem jarring at all. The new effects were beautiful, and half of them i did not notice until i watched the special feature. Love the snake eyes!!! So Cool.
    9 out of 10

ENTERTAINMENT: This one is [exploitive deleted] awesome. So much fun. I was blown away. Loved how you managed the counterpoints between the film and the music. It was kind of like the ultimate sync (remember those?). Absolutely nothing to complain about here.
    10 out of 10

    OVERALL:
    9 out of 10

SIDE NOTES: This fanedit is miraculous. Astounding. Beautiful. You have opened a new door in the fanediting world TMBTM, and you did it briliantly. I cannot wait to see more edits like these. You have earned a place in Valhalla TMBTM, congrats.

    Sincerely. Rogue.

  6. F’ing brilliant… you took one of my top favorite films and made it even more awesome. Being a huge fan of Basil Poledouris because of the soundtrack to this film I was a little anxious about this edit, but also being a fan of Manowar I couldn’t resist watching this the first minute it was downloaded. I must say you did impress and it met all expectations. Very well done! 10/10 rating

  7. Know O’ Viewer,
that between years when MTV drank Radio and epic ballad rock,
and the years of no talent produced studio pop,
there was an age undreamed of…..

    The Age of CONAN, Man-O-War!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I could not help myself.

    But WOW!
    This is EPIC!!!!
As an avid reader of Robert E. Howard, the music used for this edit absolutely captured the spirit and power of his works!
Sword and Socercy never sounded so good.
Incredible. I had never heard of MAN O WAR before, but they are now on my must buy list.
The music fit each scene perfectly and completely heightened the viewing experience for me.
I loved the additional elements created for the Viking funeral, it was perfect.

A great entertaining experience and a masterful edit in all areas.
I give this epic edit an overall score of 9/10.

  8. Oh yes, very nice. Knowing Manowar I knew that this would work just great. So many great moments here. And the imagery of the movie is so strong, really carrying the story along even without all that dialouge. Great great edit. I didn’t care for the viking funeral, but hey.

  9. Writing a review.

I found the soundtrack to the movie brain numbing to the point where i watched afterr 20 mins and I had enough, that’s my reason for the 1 star, the music was far to over powering for me, this many just be me, i’m not a fan of the heavy music scene.

    Review by chancer127 — December 20, 2010 @ 9:39 am

  10. ******* POSSIBLE SOUNDTRACK SPOILER ALERT? ********

    CONAN GOES TO ELEVEN!
Metalhead opinions: I watched this the moment it came down. I knew exactly what it would be like judging from the reviews and info and having played “Brutal Legend” on the ps3 and thinking to myself the whole time “Conan would be soooooooooo much better if Manowar had scored it.” My dream has come true! To the point where i actually had tears in my eyes during some of the sequences.

The edits are incredible, seamless and in sync on par with any music video i’ve ever seen (narative style.)

The music choices were mostly perfect (i’m not a die hard Manowar fan but i knew everything on the soundtrack apart from the Nessun Dorma cover.) I’ve never been big on lyrics (the “music” usually the reason for me listening) but found myself intently listening to every lyric because TMBTM had obviously chosen the music cues to tie in with the plot.

The following day during my band rehearsal i started this up to show the first sequence to the other guys. We didn’t even end up turning on all the gear and playing anything, they were all as mesmerized as i was.

To TMBTM, you have the metalhead seal of approval for this one. That’s coming from 4 dudes who love metal but not big into Manowar and one die hard Manowar fan. Please do not take any offence at my finding this edit to be humorous. Half the reason i’m into metal is the inherit sense of humour that goes hand in hand with metal.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE INTO METAL TO APPRECIATE THIS EDIT (it will really help if you familiarize yourself with Manowar first and judge for yourself if you’ll enjoy 96 minutes of POWER.)
Think: Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”, the “weird bits” from Led Zeppelin’s “Song Remains The Same” but edited better or the sequences in Highlander where the Queen tracks are used as the score.
I can see how some of the crazy shred and drum solo sections in the laast 3rd of the film might be too much for anyone not into metal but for me it added to the hilarity. I’d be lying if i said i take Manowar seriously, they are a curiosity for me but this is the PERFECT visual companion for their music and i certainly enjoyed Conan more with this score, new pacing and minimal dialogue (i am not a fan of the original.)

    In keeping with Nigel Tufnel
    11/11
(My vocalist would rate it 21/11!)
