Star Wars: Deleted Magic Revisited

by OCPmovie
This is a very interesting documentary about the making of the first Star Wars film (and to a lesser extent Empire and Jedi) including a look at some of the deleted scenes, behind the scenes footage, and notes on subtle things that you might have never seen or noticed before.

Orange Cow productions: Star Wars – Deleted Magic
Lost Scenes And editing secrets of Star Wars
In March 2005, I created a DVD called Deleted Magic and released it for free, on a non-profit basis, on the internet. It was very popular. I’m told that Clive Young’s book Homemade Hollywood called it “The best documentary ever made on the making of Star Wars.”
In 2009, I decided to revisit the major deleted scenes of Star Wars. Most of these scenes had only been released in low quality, 12 frames per second, on CD-ROMs in the late 90s. I used the program Twixtor to generate new frames and restore these scenes to 24 frames per second – not a perfect solution during fast motion, but jaw-droppingly successful during dialogue scenes, and an improvement that is like night and day. I combined a multitude of new sources within the same frame to restore the Jabba the Hutt scene. I animated a shot of Luke and a Treadwell droid, and a shot of Ben attacking with his lightsaber during the Cantina sequence. I have restored these scenes to a quality never seen before, and placed them on this disc for you, edited into the original, unchanged Deleted Magic feature documentary from 2005. Enjoy.

With many thanks to:
Mark Johnson
Brad Cook
Peter Lopez
Jambe Davdar (Jabba the Hutt scene)
A note that the special features also appear in slightly better quality than on the original Deleted Magic … ripped directly from other fine fan DVDs. The 1977 crawl does not appear this time round due to disc space (I had intended to use the version from my own Star Wars Classic Edition 2.0).
Slightly different menu music this time round.
You might find subtle references to two of my other fan DVD projects.
The object of Deleted Magic Revisited was to recreate my original Deleted Magic DVD from 2005, but with new versions of five major deleted scenes. I had edited these scenes in 16×9 aspect ratio to preserve their quality. However, the original Deleted Magic was edited in a 4×3 aspect ratio, due to the many different sources used in the film, and the onscreen captions.
So, it was impossible to place the new material into the film seamlessly. Instead, there’s an ugly jump as to another track as your DVD player switches ratios.
I tried to place these switches in inconspicuous places, reediting some material from the original Deleted Magic in 16×9 to make the transitions easier.
I’ve recreated the functionality of the original Deleted Magic DVD, not an easy task, as it’s a very complex DVD full of subtitles, photo galleries, many chapters and tracks, “stories”, alternate audio, different versions of things … I retyped the extra subtitles, recreated the image galleries, etc.
Enjoy this new version!

In QuickPar I am getting the messages:
-Cannot create “deleted_magic_ocp.iso”:(87) The parameter is incorrect.
-Missing files:1
-deleted_magic_opc.iso 4,509,466,624 Missing(2,936/2,936 blocks available)
I have checked all rapidshare files they are all there with the following sizes 1-43 (104,448,000) each.
I Unrared all the Parfiles with the following sizes #1-4 (102,400)
#5 (50,093)
I cannot figure out whats wrong? all files where downloaded from rapidsahre?
Anyoneelse with this problem or a solution?
Thank You.

the quickpar files need to be in the same folder as the iso files.
Review by boon23 — September 13, 2007 @ 10:51 pm
All of the Unrared Par & Iso files are in the same folder.
QuickPar ran for hours g
I had to use an earlier version of QuickPar(QP joined the ISO files together-took hours) and found out data is missing but Quickpar can’t repair it nor tell me from what file the data is missing from! (read all I can about Par files and Quickpar tutorials with no solutions with the exception that I think there is a download missing from this webpage Iso.044 ).
Some of the videos on the DVD won’t play or ends early.
* Roxio verified the ISO data was matching 100% to the DVD after checking the data betwen the ISO & DVD after the DVD was burned.
What is missing from the DVD as of the above directory contents listing are:
1 – NFO file
2 – A JACKET_P folder
3 DVD-Rom extras – Original screenplays for Star Wars (4), Empire and Jedi.
Four video files (Lost Cut Crawl, Anatomy of a Dewback Pt. 2, Rough ROTJSE
What is working:
The main Star Wars:Deleted Magic movie plays all the way through.
The two DVD Cover Art files in the DVD_Rom folder. * note these are the only two files in this folder.
QuickPar shows:44 split ISO files.
Rapidshare downloadable files shown above:43.

Can anyone confirm that the Quickpar files are intact enough here to restore to a 100% working DVD with the files in the Rapidshare links above that have been downloaded after the date of September 25 2007. Thanks :O)

faneditsw, looks like it quickpared the parts together for me without any problems – after I unrared the 5 part rar, part 44 appeared in my folder and quickpar did the job in under a half hour of making the ISO

As I watched Returning To Jedi first, I can see how your work has improved from this movie. Very interesting and informative, but some scenes were cut short and the dialogue was up for a short time causing me to pause a lot to read it, I am not a speed reader sadly. All in all though it was great to watch. All we need now is someone to clean up the deleted scenes and finally make a full length very original The Star Wars.

theguyver-
OCP actually didn’t make Returning to Jedi. Jambe Davdar’s documentaries are inspired by OCP’s Deleted Magic.
But make no mistake: Deleted Magic is the grandfather of fan made SW documentaries. The scope is gigantic and the craftsmanship is about as good as it gets. If there is a Star Wars Fan Hall of Fame, OCP would definately have a retired jersey there.

This is a wonderful job, very interesting and most enjoyable ! Thank you very much for your work.
I’ve just 2 small problems with the DVD : the “Notes on Chief Bast Scene” sequence doesn’t seem to be there, and the “Chapter selection” option also points to the Special Features. (I got the files from MegaUpload)
Review by mvhl — August 2, 2009 @ 12:03 am
mvhl: There is a menu fix for the chapter selection option. If you load the new dlc file that is at fanedit.info, you will see the menu fix rar file in the container and just download that file. Then overwrite the existing bup and ifo files with the new ones that are contained in that rar file.

This is a very solid documentary on Star Wars. I felt it was a little slow in parts, especially the screen tests (they ran a little long for my taste), but in general this was very entertaining. On a scale of 1 to 10 Frinks, this edit receives 7 Frinks.

One of the most recommended fanedits ever for me. I love just about everything in this edit. One minor annoyance is the very long preview up front, full of scenes from ESB and ROTJ. Feels too much like spoilers, and OCP never did do edits for ESB or ROTJ, either.
However…without Deleted Magic, would Jambe Davdar had made his equally excellent Bulding Empire and Returningto Jedi docs? That’s another reason why I love this edit. Definitely a MUST HAVE for any fan.

10/10 If you have even a passing interest just have a look, it will not disappoint. One note, my pc had trouble with the jabba sequence playing the vob files through windows media player so ended up copying to dvd/watching on ps3 and it looked incredible. Many hats off to you sir…

As I watched — I, too, had my finger hovering over the Pause button. Admittedly, I am not the faster reader; but there were times when I didn’t need to pause. Which makes me wonder if the timing of the subtitles is, perhaps, lacking consistency(?)
Either way, a VERY entertaining watch. And if pauses are part of the bargain, then so be it.
