THE WORLD'S GREATEST FILM MEETS THE WORLD'S GREATEST BAND: EXPERIENCE THE ODYSSEY LIKE YOU'VE NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE. This edit began as a traditional movie sync with all dialogue and sound effects removed. It has now transformed into a completely different project: a full soundtrack replacement using the one-of-a-kind library of Pink Floyd. Every bit of original music has been replaced with a carefully selected soundtrack of Pink Floyd music.
Intention:
If you're familiar with Dark Side of the Rainbow then you should be pretty well-acquainted with the idea of a movie sync. If you're not, a quick explanation: Dark Side of the Rainbow is the combining of the film The Wizard of Oz (1939) and the Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon (1973). By playing the album over the movie, it appears that the two sync together almost perfectly. There is actually an entire website dedicated to this concept, not just for Oz and Dark Side, but the combining of other films as well. http://moviesyncs.com/
My favorite film is 2001: A Space Odyssey. I am also a big Pink Floyd fan. I have been familiar with the syncing of the "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" sequence and the Pink Floyd song "Echoes" for years. The sync is quite remarkable. This project is an attempt to create a full sync of the film using Pink Floyd music.

After realizing I did not like the idea of a traditional movie sync like Dark Side of the Rainbow, I decided to take a different approach. Though time consuming and at times frustrating to create, I find that the soundtrack replacement completely changes the feeling the film gives you, especially the last 25 minutes. During the process, I never wanted to alter any of the original footage and keep all of the original dialogue and sound effects. All of the original cuts are there, except for a shortened amount of black screen at the beginning and a shortened intermission. Doing so allowed me to fit the right songs in the right places while using the moviesyncs page as a guide. This kept Kubrick's original cinematic vision while altering the mood of the film.
Cuts and Additions:
-Replaced every bit of original music with Pink Floyd music in the order listed below
-Edited levels so they sound good together (dialogue and music are balanced)
-Original music removed from Frank's birthday and chess scenes, dialogue kept
-Recreated monolith high-pitch tone to play over music during Excavation Site scene
-Tweaked the Intermission so the word is on the screen for the whole time and the whole section is shorter
-Shortened black screen intro and added introductory text
-Added music during otherwise silent scenes
-Replaced some credits so that the Editor and Sound editor are both now "Cynical Cinema"
-Added tracklist to end credits
-Added slideshow to end credits

Ok so first off I knocked off a star on enjoyment because I totally fell asleep!!
A/V gets a moderate score because we were only able to obtain quite a low-rez file and it does deserve a better presentation. I feel this is fair because really its just because it gives me some critique and I want any reader to take it with a pinch of salt as Cynical Cinema says they will be going to another download site and will likely have it sorted anyway, and 10/10 is quite boring all the time anyway. Editing jams well although sometimes I thought the levels might have been adjusted slightly to suit the cuts but again I fell asleep and this may have been an observation of a half opened eye, or maybe I just dreamt these moments. Narrativity is of course a strong point and Im throwing a solid seven stars at it to kind of balance the look of the tally board there. I know, right?
Just consider this as the only way to watch 2001ASO and after one or two tweaks with some input from other Pink Floyd officianados it certainly has room for a place in the halls of perfection that are FEORG ;)

As a big sci fi buff, 2001 has been an iconic film in my collection for years. It's not my favorite film, but I appreciate it for its groundbreaking effects and psychedelic imagery and its impact on future films/TV, including Space: 1999 and Star Wars.
As to Pink Floyd, I've been a listener for years with "One of These Days" off of Meddle being one of my all-time favorite Floyd songs... the reverberating bass on good speakers sounds INCREDIBLE. The fact that the movie starts with this track IMMEDIATELY drew me in.
For the most part, I think the musical selections really work. "Grooving with a Pict" works EXACTLY where you would expect it to... Welcome to the Machine, excellent. There are a couple of moments where I felt *something* of more impact should occur at specific scenes (the iconic tossing of the bone/seeing the first spaceship, for example), but these are merely personal preferences. One of the things I appreciate is utilizing some lesser-appreciated tracks as background music; many of these tracks are not really "listening" music, but work great as "soundtrack" music. So, a handful of tracks the average listener will ignore/skip when listening to an album have a new life when put to film.
The audio is clean; I observed no issues. The mix between dialog and music appeared masterfully done to my ears. I know I knocked 1 star on Audio Editing, but this is ONLY because I think a couple of scenes needed a little more "umpf" than the music provided.
I recommend everyone give this fanedit a watch/listen, ESPECIALLY if you are either into Science Fiction or (earlier) Pink Floyd. There are a handful of "key era" songs from around Dark Side of the Moon, but this is one of the best ways to expose yourself to some of the earlier, more psychedelic tracks.
