  1. As far as I’m concerned, this is the definitive version of Superman II. All of the superior Donner scenes are included with Lester’s better, more satisfying ending. I also thought it was a nice touch to include the Arctic Police scene and leave out the FOS being destroyed. This is exactly the way they SHOULD have done it in the Donner Cut DVD. My only nitpick is that it would have been nice to see some of the campy lines removed such as “Holy Skunksweat!” and the toilet joke. But whatever…

Thanks for the great fanedit. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

  2. I agree with the previous poster that this is the definitive Superman II. It includes the very best from both versions, and is flawlessly edited into one coherent story. I am especially glad to see the “General, would you care to step outside?” line was included instead of the vastly inferior line about the freedom of the press. Awesome job – as far as I am concerned, this IS Superman II.

  3. The best version of Superman II to date, I agree!!! Fans should campaign for the studio to release the “hybrid edit” on DVD; it’s that good. The unremastered (if that’s a word) scenes you put in the movie could be restored by the studio if they ever put this version out. The only changes I would make- 1. Put the “Superman throws the rocket into space and the villains escape” scene before the credits. The scenes before the credits should tell you what has already happened, then after the credits roll, the movie should start with no more footage from the previous film. 2. The “Elevator bully” scene is unnecessary and takes away the continuity, because Clark is wearing a different suit in this scene than he was wearing in the Daily Planet with Lois a few minutes before. Virtually all the changes other than this I agreed with, and thought they were very logical. Richard Donner insisted on cutting out so much of Lester’s footage in “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut” that the film suffered somewhat.

  4. Again, a true fan gives us the deifnitive cut of Superman II. Has the best parts of both versions, including the right ending and our favorite takes (Care to step outside?). Awesome. My only complaint: I liked the screen test footage of Clark and Lois in Niagra Falls when she shoots him. This is the version I will watch from now on, though — no doubt there.

  5. This was well done. I like the inclusion of some of the deleted scenes. I’m still not a fan of the pink bear bit, however, the dialogue after the bear is necessary. This movie feels more complete, and not as hurried as the Donner cut, which I agree, suffers from the fact that they refused to touch the Lester footage. It just works better.

  6. It seems there will never be a version that appeals to every single fan, but this one must surely be the closest! I thorougly enjoyed it and have shared it with others as well. It just does everything right. ADM did everyone a great service with his Superman edits, and they are defintiely the ones to take off the shelf whenever you get a hankerin’ for some Superman action. Very, very well done, sir, and thank you so much!

  7. Without a doubt, this will be the Superman II that I watch for years and years to come. It is by far the most satisfying alternative cut to Lester’s Theatrical release. The brilliant transitional edit of the opening credits to the fast chase of Superman trailing the nuclear rocket is worth the price of admission alone. It really grabs the audience and says, “Hey, here’s Superman II. Hang on and enjoy the ride!!” BRAVO, ADIGITALMAN!!
If I am to nitpick, it would only be at two small instances that happen within close proximity. In the Metropolis battle sequence we get Lester’s version of Superman flying to the Daily Planet saying “Would you care to step outside.” I think we all agree that this is the correct choice, being that it is much more rousing and satisfying than “Freedom of the press”. Adigitalman also make the wise choice of keeping Lois’s reaction to Superman standing out the window from the Donner Cut; this helps in keeping all the reaction shots consistent with Donner’s version. My only gripe, is that I feel he should have gone back to the Lester Cut of Superman flying away from The Daily Planet while Zod says, “Come to me son of Jor-El!!” The Donner cut has him fly off the pole from an outside view which uses a music Que that is recycled two to three more times in the battle sequence; it is too redundant. Lester’s version is more exciting when he fly’s away from the perspective of inside the building, in my opinion. Last but not least is the awful looped line from the Donner Cut when Superman says, “I’m not a coward Zod.” The Lester version should have been spliced in to correct this, as it is Chris Reeve actually saying the line and not a fraudulent looped one. This is a tiny, but rather truly annoying mistake that is not adigitalman’s fault, but one that I feel should have been corrected. Overall, a truly satisfying, alternative experience that I would certainly recommend to anyone. This is the Cut to have!! 9/10 Score!!

  8. I’m not sure there is much point in reviewing so old and well known an edit, but I’ve watched it so I’ll rate it. I agree with both of bluman22’s nitpicks and don’t care much for the elevator bully, but as Ripplin correctly observed it is impossible to please everyone. Adigitalman had a vision for the edit that he implemented consistently, which is what I look for in an edit. This is not my ideal version of Superman II, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable one that makes the right editing choices more often than not.

Video quality was absolutely fine, and the audio editing was very impressive. I particularly liked the alternate cue at the beginning. Presentation was fine. I will say that the Donner and Lester footage don’t quite match in terms of color, and, while careful editing has stopped the differences being too pronounced, one can sometimes see the transition. Color correction is a pain though, and this is an older edit. I hope to see ADM revisit his Superman edits one day.

It’s 9 out of 10 from me too. This is classic adigitalman!
