I agree with much of what joebshmoe said, especially the part about more trimming needed (mostly stupid dialogue) - though I used to really like cage but now I'm sort of indifferent to him.
The only part that I didn't like about cage's performance was when he was in the cell - specifically, the very last part of it.

Finally got round to watching this last night and just want to say that this is a very, very good edit of a great movie with some terrible bits. This removes those bits and makes it much more dramatic. The editing of the underground trolleys/buckets is top notch and a VAST improvement on the original. Worth seeing just for this.

i'm in the camp that has an enormous amount of dislike for mr. cage. how does he play the same f***ing character in EVERY movie? WTF? ...perhaps i am too biased to give this a proper review...

anyways, as for editing, audio and video this is great as always from CBB. i just think more drastic measures need to be taken to make this a thoroughly enjoyable movie, but obviously this is a very subjective element. clearly a LOT of people like this movie.

CBB-ishness is a 5/5
entertainment is a 3/5

4/5 ...and i can easily admit that if you LIKE nicholas cage this will EASILY be a 5/5 for you...

Connery. Cage. Who would've thought the pairing of these two men on-screen would've amounted to anything but Connery looking bored? In 1996, audiences were feeling the exact opposite. THE ROCK was a surprise runaway hit, giving Micheal Bay's directing career a MAJOR kick in the pants forward and well beyond BAD BOYS. Now, BAD BOYS was smart fun but THE ROCK was a whole lot smarter and faster. When Criterion chose THE ROCK as one of their titular "special editions" many classic film lovers scratched their heads and asked "Why?"

Boon23's THERMALIZED edit answers back. And how!

As I mentioned previously, THE ROCK was smarter and faster than it's predecessor BAD BOYS but as time eventually shows us all there were still elements that would slowly take away the original WOW! effect the movie had way back in 1996. Micheal Bay can shoot loads of action and make it spectacular, but it can lack substance. Everything is usually simmering so high that it eventually boils over and soils whatever is nearby. Boon23's edit chucks out the extra fat elements from the movie (see his list of edits to know what I mean) and then he manages to place the lid back on the movie so well that you won't be so certain if you should take the DVD out or not by the end because it just might explode. Ok, it won't but you probably will want a second viewing almost right away because you just won't believe how great this movie REALLY is. If Micheal Bay could show even a fraction of restraint that Boon23 manages in THE ROCK - THERMALIZED edit, I promise you all the "baysayers" (aka naysayers) would shrivel up and die from lack of critique against him.

Criterion was right, just ask Boon23. It seems like Alcatraz has just reopened....
