The Island (Custom Built Edition)
by geKKoWhat is it about? The Island had the potential of being so much more than what it was. It had hints of The Matrix, Blade Runner, and Logan’s Run. But ultimately it relies on cliched action movie devices and the ending doesn’t quite payoff from the setup. Hopefully this edit at least tightens up the story and improves the overall pace.

Additional Comment:
The Island is your typical Michael Bay movie – outrageous action sequences, redundant exposition, quick cut MTV style editing, lame attempts at humor, and abundant product placement.
Why certain scenes were cut:
The Xbox hologram fight game sequence was nothing more than a Microsoft product placement and had little to do with the story.
Lincoln/Jordan crashing through a building and surviving a fall from several hundred feet was a bit difficult to believe, which is ironic in a movie about clones and flying rocket bikes.
Sarah Jordan was revealed to be a model/actress who’s posed in Maxim magazine (more product placement perhaps). It really had no relevance to the story other than to tell us that Scarlett Johansson is hot, but I think most people already know that.
The climactic face-off between Lincoln and Merrick felt too much like an old James Bond movie. Where else would you see the evil CEO get into hand-to-hand combat with someone who’s about to bring down the company? We can assume he was eventually fired, arrested, or whatever.
The movie could reasonably end after Lincoln/Jordan sleep together and fade to black. The final 20 minutes is just your typical action filled prison break sequence. However, it does bring some closure to the Laurent character.
The Island had the potential of being so much more than what it was. It had hints of The Matrix, Blade Runner, and Logan’s Run. not sure why you would cut Lincoln finding the Moth. I mean that’s what set him off into realizing that they were lied to and there was still life outside. Removing that, takes away all of the reasons for him to even try to escape to start with. Yeah his girl was in danger, but if he hadn’t found the moth and realized that there was a way out he wouldn’t have been able to do anything but maybe try to do a standoff inside the building.
He would never have found the way up to the top without that moth.

I agree with dasani. Finding that moth really puts things in motion. If there was no moth, he wouldn’t have done what he had done to escape while saving the girl.

re the moth, i agree to an extent, but i also think it was an unnecessary plot device. based on the conversations lincoln had with jordan, merrick, and mccord, we already know lincoln is more curious and restless than the average clone. he already sneaks out to prohibited areas by visiting mccord, so he’s no stranger to exploring beyond the “safe” area. along with his nightmares, i think this provides enough motivation for him to explore even farther out to the office/medical area and unintentionally see the pregnant woman get killed. i didn’t see the moth as a reason for him to escape. it was more just to reinforce his curiosity to explore, so it seemed like a redundant motivator. when he sees the woman get killed, it’s at that point that he realizes he might get killed and decides to get jordan and escape.
nonetheless i appreciate your comments and hope you still liked the rest of the edit.

This Gekko fanedit is a huge improvement on the lumbering clunker that is the theatrical release. Since it’s a Michael Bay film It still has a preposterous amount of things being blown sky-high, ludicrously inept (but very nice) heroes escaping and evading as if by magic, outwitting hordes of competent, highly-skilled, well-equipped pursuers, and plot-holes wide enough to drive a massive transport truck through. I would have liked to have seen the moth plot-device retained. +1 here on the side of it being an important motivator/trigger for Lincoln (if it got in, he can get out), even if he does have sufficient other reasons for being alarmed. Anyway, well done Gekko. Good job! Especially removing the ridiculous and entirely stupid cringe-inducing Lincoln vs Merrick mano-a-mano middle-weight fight. I’d decided this was a bozo DVD to unload. Now I feel differently. I might even revisit this cut again, which says a lot since I have often told people “The Island” is a bad action-comedy.
Now on to the other fanedit to see how it compares.
