Star Wars Episode 1: Master And Apprentice

a TRUE FANEDIT by Horace
It is a re-edit of The Phantom Menace. Some of the edits made and ideas used were similar to things other editors have done, but this movie has been edited to death, so some overlap is expected.

INTENTION:
It is a re-edit of The Phantom Menace. Some of the edits I made and ideas I used were similar to things other editors have done, but this movie has been edited to death, so some overlap is expected. My interest in editing (so far) extends only to the Star Wars saga. Like many others I want to make it watchable again.

CUTLIST:
Download the complete cutlist, transcribed by TV’s Frink HERE.

  • - New Crawl (Short history of Jedi and Sith, short explanation of the Force  this information cannot be introduced for the first time in episode 4, changed focus of dispute from trade to slavery (similar to MagnoliaFan’s edit), introduced pieces of story from the books “Darth Maul: Saboteur”, “Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter”, and “Cloak of Deception” in order to show that Darth Maul has been hard at work spreading evil throughout the galaxy. This new crawl is long, complicated, and it moves quickly, so read fast.
  • - New Alien Languages. (The Gungans (Jar Jar) and the Neimoidians (Trade Federation) no longer speak English. Like MagnoliaFan’s edit the alternate language tracks have been reversed and subtitles written to replace poor dialogue. The Spanish track was used for the Gungans, and the French track was used for the Neimoidians.
  • - New subtitles also written for Watto when he speaks Huttese
  • - New Neimoidian and Watto subtitles written to make them meaner or more menacing.
  • - Darth Sidiuos’ face has been obscured so as not to give away his identity. (The identity of Darth Sidious is a major subplot that runs through the prequels. It is supposed to be a huge revelation in episode 3, but we see his face over and over again in episode 1. This has been corrected.)
  • - Jar Jar’s antics have been removed
  • - Boss Nass’ jowl shaking and nervous ticks have been removed
  • - Explanation of Jar Jar’s banishment and the Gungans quarrel with the Naboo has been reworked
  • - Second half of underwater sequence has been removed
  • - Lots of poor / unnecessary dialogue removed throughout movie
  • - First Watto’s shop sequence reworked. The “Are you an angel?” convo. Between Anakin and Padme has been cut down considerably because it was cringe inducing
  • - Jar Jar and Sebulba fight has been removed
  • - Anakin’s childishness and / or poor dialogue has been largely removed
  • - No mention of Midichlorians and any future mention of midichlorians removed
  • - No mention of Anakin not having a father
  • - Build-up to podrace has been cut down considerably
  • - Clean up droids and Sebulba flaming other podracer deleted scenes have been cut back in
  • - Two headed announcer cut down considerably
  • - Post podrace celebration cut down considerably
  • - Anakin fighting Greedo deleted scene cut back in
  • - Probe droid deleted scene cut back in
  • - No air taxi sequence
  • - No reference to Queen Amidala being “elected”
  • - A couple of meetings between the Neimoidians and Darth Sidious have been removed because they were redundant and boring
  • - Gungan battle trimmed to exclude Jar Jars antics
  • - Anakins ship is not on autopilot, all of his decisions are on purpose
  • - No parade at end

  1. Technically, this edit was pretty good. I have not actually seen Magnoliafan’s edits, so I can not comment on how different this edit was. I was somewhat disappointed in the edit. There are many Phantom Menace edits, and I was hoping for something very different, but many of the same annoyances were still there. I guess it is hard to polish this turd. But since this edit didn’t really go beyond the others I will give it 3/5 for storytelling.

The video quality was quite nice. I would give it a 5/5 for being very clean and crisp.

My only small complaint with the video editing (more appropriate for the story) was the crawl. Although the starfield was beautiful, and technically it was fine, the crawl itself was extremely long, and as a result ran fast. I had to pause many times to read everything. Other than this, the video was very nice.

The audio was not as nice. It cracked a lot and dropped out on many of the louder parts, particularly the battles. As far as the audio editing it was fine. Most of the alien voices were an improvement, although sometimes you could tell it was just playing backwards. Also, there were some music parts that were very noticeably chopped. The cracking in the audio bothered me, so I give it a 2/5

    so to sum it up:
    storytelling: 3/5
    video: 5/5
    audio: 2/5

This was a nice start, and hopefully Horace continues to edit and improves upon some of the things from this

    Thanks for the edit
