I am an extended edition buff and have a big collection of original ones and all the fanedits from here.
Many extended editions do not add anything to the movie, just add more useless scenes. I will rate the ones here.
Rating criteria: image quality, sound quality, 3x improvement, overall.
Image Quality: 8 of 10
Sound Quality: 9 of 10
Improvement: 5 of 10
Overall: 6 of 10

A good 15 years ago, I loved Dune, a few years later when the TV extended version came out - all excitement. Except the TV version was full of crap, bad editing and a starting I no longer liked. Oddly enough, I watched this version again after watching John Harrison's version of Dune and came to the conclusion it was bollocks and I'm ashamed to say that I prefered John Harrison's version.

After discovering Fanedit.org - I found these version of Dune floating around - several versions. Unsure which to go with, I opted for ADMs as it was longer (I love deleted scenes) and he'd made a big attempt to improve the offensive bits. I've yet to watch the other versions of Dune on this site.

I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. I WAS ELATED!!!!

ADM has restored Irulan to the opening credits - which I preferred. We don't have the comic book opening by Herbert narrating(I believe?) or him narrating 'A secret report from within the guild'. Cut short, ADM's version has restored quite literally my faith in this film. Ironically, I watched John Harrison's version after and realised how campy shite it is!!!!(Despite being very faithful). ADM has restored Lynch's vision in my personal opinion.

Any fan of Dune, who was disappointed in the extended cut and has lost their faith in the film should see this. OK - some scenes are not good quality, but do I care? No!! That's why it's called a 'Workprint'!!! Well done ADM, this, together with your extended version of Blade Runner rates you as my favourite FE!

This is a well done edit of Dune. It's great to see scenes like Thufir Hawat sacrificing himself in the film (finally bringing full circle the strange heart-plug subplot). I was also very impressed of how good the 3 hour movie looks on a single-layer disc! That said, I would like to get my hands on the dual-layer version, if it actually exists as Reave claims.

The "workprint" scenes have a lot of judder, which unfortunately takes away from the experience. I don't remember there being that much judder in the deleted scenes from the retail Extended Edition compared to this version. Maybe ADM's encoding software didn't properly perform 3:2 pulldown on these scenes? That said, it's been a couple of years since I've seen the retail version, so I may be mistaken.

If there was a scene that I'd like added, it would be the birth of Alia. I always thought the story jumped forward too much and that her birth was only mentioned as an aside during the spice war.

This is a great version of Dune. Any chance of seeing the DL upped? I have it, but it's corrupt.

by Leonenut on faneditforum:
DM's Dune edit is fantastic.
I noticed that one of the deleted scenes with the Fremen elders talking to Paul before he gives his speech in the big hall was missing too. Though I think Raffaella De Laurentiis talks over part of it.
Other snippets of the alternative water of life scene aren't included, but shouldn't be anyway.

The TV edit uses alternate shots in many cases during some scenes and ADM seems to have gone with the TV version. The shot of the Navigator's mouth is 2 seconds longer in the theatrical cut, but in the TV edit we get a POV shot from the Navigator looking at the Emperor instead, for example.

This isn't authorative as it misses some shots here and there but there are good lists with pictures here:

Seeing what the TV version has different: http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittbericht.php?ID=1380
Seeing what the Theatrical Cut has different: http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittbericht.php?ID=1382

by gcreed on faneditforum: This is a great work. The quality of the reintegration of the new scenes is really fantastic because you can SEE when it is a new scene but it SOUND like the rest of the movie (at least on stereo because I don't have 5.1 or anything more than TV).
I noticed 2 very very very little moments that are not in this extented cut.

At the arrival of the Guilde's Navigator, we no longer see the Emperer losing is cape (present in movie edit but not in tv edit).

When Paul is fighting the droid, Gurney is saying something about the influence of Jessica in his trainning (present in tv edit but not in the movie edit).

I just wanted to know if there was a reason for those 2 very very very little omissions.

I really start to like this world of fan edit. Bravo
