House of 1000 Corpses The Horrorgrind Cut

by Horrorgrind Home Video
What is it about? This is a radical take on House Of 1000 Corpses. The movie is cut down to around 45 minutes in length with the image quality vastly changed to represent a worn out VHS recording.  No filler, just pure horror, with the basic plot intact.  To further add to the illusion that this movie was released twenty years ago on Videocassette, I wanted to change much of the music to Heavy Metal tracks of the 80s.

Fanedit details :

  • Video has been cropped to a 4:3 aspect ratio, Various effects and filters were added to emulate VHS picture quality.
  • DVD contains no menu’s or special features, as it is intended to be transferred to an old, worn VHS tape before watching. :}

Your intention for this fanedit:

After watching Retro Horror Remix’s Vintage VHS fanedit of House of 1000 Corpses, I was inspired to make one of my own using a similar concept, yet keeping the movie at around 45 minutes in length.  No filler, just pure horror, with the basic plot intact.  To further add to the illusion that this movie was released twenty years ago on Videocassette, I wanted to change much of the music to Heavy Metal tracks of the 80s.  What band could fit this movie better than White zombie?

Your way to achieve your intention:
Aside from removing many scenes, I replaced a lot of the music with 1980s White Zombie songs.
I removed many scenes and characters I felt were unnecessary, including  Stucky, the robbers, Denise’s dad, the police, the dinner scene, Grampa Hugo’s jokes, several scenes involving Tiny, and many others.

  1. Review by twistd101:
I have to say, this is definitely a decent edit. Not quite VHS (little too much grain, not enough “VHS” – it gets a bit pixely at times). There’s a lot of nice touches. Sometimes the over-saturation is a bit much – but honestly, that’s one of those things that makes me like it that much more. The way the colors bleed, making the picture and color -just- off enough. In a good, artsy-kinda way. The musical changes, awesome. Definitely can’t complain. The story flows well. Personally, I like the cut at the beginning when they first arrive at Spaulding’s. Very vague, very “huh, wonder what the hell this crazy clown is all about…” All in all, a damn good edit. As was already said before, it could have looked a little more VHS (a-la say… those lines at the bottom of the screen that VHS tapes get over the years – what’s that called? You know, where the bottom part kinda bends and smears to the right a bit). Maybe add some parts where it looks like the tape was eaten a little – you know how those old VHS “adult films” got from fast forwarding and re-watching the same parts again and again. ;) Or maybe that’s just me. How would one even re-create that without transferring to VHS and then back again (as was suggested)? I don’t know that it can be done without doing that. But I digress. A fine edit indeed, and a nice companion piece to the original. Can’t wait for Cannibal Holocaust. :D

    –Quality–

    Video: 2.5 / 5 – it’s pretty bad – BUT, 4 / 5 – if we’re talking personal taste, art-wise, etc.

Audio: 4.5 / 5 – DVD audio, noticed a few odd audio cuts, maybe a fade could have been used, and so on, but overall it was good (a little too good, needed that crappy VHS mono-esque sound to it!) ;)

Entertainment: 5 / 5 – I liked the style, the music, the overall story, and it was just short enough not to be annoying or get old. I liked it, what can I say. Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea (matter of fact, I can see this being not very popular) – but hey, like RHR, at least you got one person on your side hehe. ;)

  2. While this is technically a decent edit (video/audio) I personally didn’t care for this version because it removed many of the parts of the film I enjoyed which gives me a very biased view here. (no personal offense to the editor though!)

As far as the VHS style theme, the 4:3 aspect ratio as well as grain/color effects worked well with this particular film but I dont think they accurately gave the feel and appearance of true VHS. Regardless, it made the film look pretty cool and added another layer of sleaze to the movie. However, these same effects did not help the dark/night time scenes though as they are now very hard to see/follow and if I wasnt already familiar w/ the plot I think would have missed a few things during those scenes.

I liked the way the DVD was arranged to play straight through like a VHS tape though w/ the trailers running right into the film and the 80’s “horrorgrind” logo was a nice touch.

I also enjoyed the addition of the old White Zombie tunes to the film and credits and feel they worked well in context w/ the scenes.

Video: 2/5 but thats intentional so no deduction for that

Audio: 4/5 sounded good, no glaring faults, nice addition of White Zombie tracks.

Entertainment: 2/5 other than the video effects adding a new dimension to the scenes I personally just didnt like the film since it omitted many of the scenes and subplots that made me personally like the original (Fishboy, the girls dad, Otis wearing dad’s face, sheriff Wydell, etc)

  4. It turns one of the worst movies ever into the worst fanedit I have ever watched. Just sick.
