Dead Set Serious
a TRUE FANEDIT by CBB
This turns the TV show DEAD SET into a true zombie movie. Gone are the dragging, too funny, annoying and over-the-top scenes to present an extraordinary quality horror film from the UK. The image has been recolored and the brightness levels were improved for a more movie like experience. member ratings: |

INTENTION:
Dead Set was an incredibly great TV show and the most shocking one for a long time. Responses all over the globe were praising it and rightfully so, because it was from the plot over the cast to the filming and the special effects a really well crafted horror show, combining elements of Big Brother and a Zombie outbreak. And there you already get it, because that sounds ridiculous and funny. On the one hand the audience gets the dragging scenes and talks from the Big Brother inmates and on the other hand the horror from running, killing and flesh eating zombies. In addition to that some scenes are incredibly over the top (Patrick shitting in the bucket, hacking Grayson, being eaten, etc) or stupid in wanting to be funny (the light machine, the policemen, Marky shooting at Riq, etc).
That’s where I wanted to get in. This show had so much potential for a cool fanedit movie that I just could not let it pass and I think the outcome is among the best zombie movies of the entire genre.
EDITING DETAILS:
The idea was simple, the creation not so much, most of all because of technical problems though. Turning DEAD SET into a true zombie movie tries to take all the best horror elements from it and leave all what was distracting from that on the cutting floor. That’s why the audience really meets the Big Brother inmates when Kelly enters the Big Brother house, not before that. The plot has been trimmed for better pacing and the worst over-the-top moments have been removed (most of all those are scenes with Patrick – the producer) as well as dragging conversations or scenes that lead nowhere.
By recoloring and correcting the brightness the image quality reflects more of a movie experience, because the original show was incredibly dark and made days almost look like nights.

You did it yet again Boon, turning what I thought was a very average tv mini series into a great Zombie movie. A thrill to watch, scared my wife silent which was a plus (only joking). Video and sound were perfect. 5/5 from me.

I really enjoyed the original TV mini series, and was excited when boon23 created a movie version without some of the extraneous reality show goofy bits. This really felt like a movie, and I didn’t notice any strange leaps or missing material. kudos for making it seamless. This was truly a theatrical experience. I was so glad to be gone with the bucket-shitting, and Pippa’s annoying (almost suicide inducing) screams “I dooontaaa liiiiiiike eeeeeetttt” Thank you so much for hacking almost all of these. STORYTELLING & EDITING 5 / 5
AUDIO 5 / 5 wonderful. sounded great, and I didnt notice any audio glitches or bad transitions.
VIDEO 5 / 5 again, good. a couple times I noticed some macroblocking in dark areas and in sky gradients, but this was absolutely minimal and overall well done.
DVD PRESENTATION 5 / 5 As usual, the faneditor went all out and we get transitions, motion menus, bonus features, and faneditor overviews. I love getting the full package, and I really appreciate the extra effort a faneditor puts in for this. As a side comment, the DVD presentation had an almost lighthearted feel. The Charlie Brooker intro and the menu fonts really lightened the mood, which was the exact opposite of the films tone. This may have been a conscious effort by the editor. Nothing wrong with it, just something curious I noted.
So to wrap it up, I give this fanedit a final score of 5 / 5. I am not a huge zombie buff (as I find most of the films to be utter crap), but there are a few that I really like. This is now another. Thanks boon

I just finished watching this. It ranks up there with all of the recent zombie flicks.
ThrowgnCpr’s review is spot on. So I really don’t have much to added other then excellent work! 5/5

I sat and watched it last night and was absolutely engulfed in the story, far more than the original. A true worthy classic and one not too be missed. As fan edits go, I consider it excellent, soaring high with my other fan favourite, Event Horizon, scoring a perfect 5

Flawless edit, from the story telling to the technical side. I was not taken out of the movie experience at any time, and everything felt like it belonged. Recommended to all horror fans!

This was a brilliant piece of editing. Very engaging. Great pace. I haven’t enjoyed a good zombie movie in a long time . . . until now!

Just had a chance to view this with a friend – we’re both Zombie fans and enjoyed the Dead Set series to a certain degree, but Patrick, the producer was somewhat of an annoying idiot, along with the Scottish bird he was locked in with….
So, Boon has cut this down to regular movie bitesize and thanksfully, thankfully removed the most irritating bits. No more Patrick taking a sh*t or having pointless conversations with the Scottish bird. Good. We don’t get the housemates talking random shite either. Boon has firmly placed the focus on Kelly and made her the central protagonist. We don’t even see the housemates now until Kelly makes her existence known to them – this keeps the focus on Kelly and makes it less of a Big Brother parody.
Removal of Patrick’s weaker scenes do all the more to strengthen his character, so well done.
Although my friend was chirping in the occasional – ‘I think there was a scene cut there’, this was no reflection on a harsh edit or a notable edit. He was recalling scenes that were missing and then we commented on how Boon was probably correct for removing them and has objective – because, the edit was perfectly seemless, there was no harsh audio or visual edits. This ran very smoothly.
Our only gripe with this was the picture. On my 26″ Acer flatscreen, the picture looked very washed out and looked like it had been brightened too much. The blacks were not true black, they were gray.
Sound quality was good however.
All in all, we were both very satisfied that Boon had constructed a cool, serious and well edited version of this series. My friend commented that he would buy Dead Set, but keep Boon’s edit inside it – “As he’d probably only ever watch that one anyway!”
I’ll give this 4.5/5 here, but 5 on the star-o-meter – it’s just the picture that’s not so good. But all in all Boon – another successful flick!

Hi CBB,
Just watched this and I have to say you did a stirling job! Very profesional!
This was far superior to the original and it really should have been shown like this. I kinda had the same ideas when it was originally aired and I’m glad you took the initiative and time to create this. I know it must have been hard work and very time consuming but my only critique would be in the picture quality. On the most part it’s great but there’s quite a few scenes where solid colour backdrops have quite a bit of banding and macroblocking.
I’m a big zombie movie fan and this FanEdit beats any Brit zombie flick hands down! It now films more cinematic and less made for TV.
Very nice work and a much deserved FanEdit award!

Does what it says on the box. You just can’t tell this is an edit. It simply comes across as a top class zombie movie. I normally don’t like Zombie films, but this one is brilliant!

Though I haven’t seen the british TV one this is a beautiful horror movie in chapters, with good refined characters and… rhythm. Thank you Fanedit

One of the best zombie movies I have ever seen.
This was truly great entertainment.
The zombie action starts just a few minutes into the movie and the next 90 minutes just flew by since it really sucked me in.
I also thought that the reunion subplot was great as well.
It’s not common to have a love story in the midst of a zombie movie.
10/10

I really loved the original as it was but I wanted to see this just out of curiosity.
It’s an interesting curio very well edited (I didn’t notice any jump cuts or anything out of place).
However I must confess I missed the jokes which actually made this production work for me so I will stick with the original set but thanks for doing it as it does provide an alternative take on the material (just one that wasn’t to my taste).
I must confess it’s a bit bizarre to read so many people saying that haven’t seen or heard of the original version but saw your edit first (I do hope they did the right thing and got hold of the original).

Great edit!
Thank God you cut the most of the annoying opening scenes in the Big Brothers house! And Kuddo’s for every second you cut off from Pippa! And the stupid annoying egg scene!
But I must say, some deletions was really not neccesary. For example, talking about things what are gone (amazone, facebook etc). I thought that was funny.
But especially the waking up and the discovering the camera’s is not working. I thought that was a intresting scene, Why delete this?
But I am glad with this, with this edit, there is one more good zombie flick, instead of a television serial.
On this moment, I am busy to make the Dutch subtitles, which I will distribute. Same I did with Mall Hours cut.

Seen the deleted scenes. And I have one bit of critique:
why deleted some gore?
Cut the body in pieces and Patrick tear apart.. I think that is the best part! Why cut this off?
