It took a long time until all the shorts were finished and I could not wait for the DVD finally showing up.
DVD presentation: great menus with audio. Really a nice watch. The “play all” button unfortunately did not work so well, but that is probably my fault, because I used the next button to skip once, which must have unmarked the playlist and led to repeating movies and jumping back. Using the next button though always brought me to the next one. The order of the movies is quite well chosen for a huge variety and indeed there are a lot of very different short movies on this DVD, different atmosphere, very different plot. The DVD presentation is an awesome job, throwgncpr.
What I particularly like about it is the intro menu, because it already shows the trashy element and that can never be ignored, when watching zombie movies. They are not to be taken too seriously. Charlie Brooker (creator of Dead Set) stated in an interview that they never wanted to put too much focus on the zombies, but more on scares and action, so the audience would not start thinking about sense and logic.
Since this is about so many short movies, I am going to comment on each of them. Sorry if some of my comments are not so nice, I am just naming them as I see them. Overall the DVD was actually a disappointment for me. The collection was quality-wise not as good as Batman Consecution and a lot of the shorts simply lacked entertainment IMO or a story that makes sense. There were a few exceptions and some nice average short movies that did entertain me.
starting with:
Diary of a dying man by 3Raz0r: I liked it. It was not so much about the gore or shocking images, but it told a nice story of a survivor. The guy is not too sympathetic, but quite entertaining and I think it was a good idea to include the news reports and the movie footage, because otherwise it would have been dragging. Editing was nicely done, plot worked. (4 stars)
Horrorgrind – The Virus: Complete trash to me (not the editing work of horrorgrind, but the source movie). I can only assume that this kind of movie is supposed to be funny, because it is so bad, but I am the wrong audience for that. We have a ridiculous outbreak at a facility and then we jump to a couple and the girl wants a light from a guy on a bench, who is a zombie and attacks her, other zombies appear, they rip her apart, her boyfriend is just watching and surprised by zombies attacking him from the back (well, actually one of the zombies is attacking the zombie that attacked the boyfriend – doesn’t look like he was supposed to though). Sorry, but that felt like a waste of time for me and the girlfiriend/boyfriend part seemed to just make it longer but did not have too much of a connection. (1 star)
Mollo – Das Zombie: I could not make heads or tails from that one. And as that I was not entertained, but bored and confused. This is a trial for a mesh-up but I don’t think the sources mix well, leaving me with all question marks all the time about what was happening and why. (1 star)
CBB – Vodoo Island: I can’t really rate my own participation, but I think it tells an ok story from Fulci’s “Island Of The Living Dead”, so I gave it 3 stars.
Blueyoda – Dead Awake: Now that is a cool mesh-up. Mixing Aliens with zombie movies was a great idea and works surprisingly well most of the time. Not all scenes are perfect, some are not fitting too well or not perfectly executed, but overall: awesome work. (4 stars)
Aztek463 – School’s in Session: A part from Resident Evil 2. I liked it. Editing was well done. (4 stars)
ThrowgnCpr – Dawn of the Millennium: An interesting combination of zombie footage and Millennium. I was mildly entertained, but the zombie footage actually confused me and I am not sure it really added to the atmostphere. Very good editing. (3 stars)
Tranzor – In 20 Seconds: A lot to read, but short and entertaining. Interesting editing with the transition effects and overlays and filters used. (3 stars)
Stomachworm – 2 Against the World: The only one I did not finish. Volume in the beginning is too low and it has hard cuts all the time. The missing reel thing took me finally totally out of it, so I quit. (1 star)
Uncanny Antman – Surviving an Undead Uprising: Great great work, Uncanny. All kudos to you. This was innovative, perfect editing and very entertaining. Exactly what I needed to be pleased in the end. (5 stars)
ghostcut’s feature did not make much sense to me…
the marvel zombie trailer was cool
and the bonus feature was nice. Thanks for that, Mollo.
Overall I can not rate the Zombie Consecution DVD higher than 3 stars. Too many bad shorts on it that make it a one-time only experience for me.

Here’s my review for the 2nd True Fanedit project: Zombie Consecution.
3Raz0r – Diary of a dying man : (3 stars) I liked the concept, but found the scenes from the movie distracting when compared to the “dairy” scenes. (3 stars)
Horrorgrind – The Virus: I loved the campyness of the source material but the second half feels tacked on and doesnt add much continuity to the short other than showing the virus has spread. (3 star)
Mollo – Das Zombie: I liked the visual effects/sound work but was very confused by this one as well there was too much jumping around and IMO Gabriel Byrne’s character could have easily been omitted (2 star)
CBB – Vodoo Island: I just didnt care for this one very much. Nothing was particularly wrong with it but other than the classic eye gouge scene this one bored me. (2 stars).
Blueyoda – Dead Awake: This was one of the standouts for me, so many different sources combined to make a thrilling new experience that was both coherent and entertaining (5 stars)
Aztek463 – School’s in Session: a fun subplot from RE2. well edited (3 stars)
ThrowgnCpr – Dawn of the Millennium: interesting but having never watched the show millenium i was a little confused. (2 stars)
Tranzor – In 20 Seconds: Another one that I was unfamiliar with the source material as well as the short story. Interesting but not my cup of tea (2 stars)
Stomachworm – 2 Against the World: I didnt have any problems with the editing because of the grainy/choppy source material. I am a fan of planet terror so I enjoyed this one even if it didnt surprise me at all. (3 star)
Uncanny Antman – Surviving an Undead Uprising: The second gem in this collection. Well edited and highly entertaining. It didnt hurt that I am a huge ‘Harvey Danger’ fan either! (5 stars)
Overall Score: 3/5

The 3 bonus materials were a nice addition to a stellar DVD package. The DVD art, layout and menu work really looks great. Kudos to ThrowgnCpr’s and Mollo’s hard work.
Like Boon mentioned in his review, after Batman Consecution I expected more from this one. Many of the edits presented here were just re-edited subplots taken from single films which really wasnt very impressive. I liked them all but preferred the edits that drew from multiple sources to make something new.
Regardless of my personal views and opinions I was still entertained by this project and appreciate and applaud every participants hard work. I never like to criticize things that I myself cannot do half as well, but honesty is the best policy. Hopefully I can churn something semi-respectable out for Consecution 3.

my review:
3raz0r – diary of a dying man – I did not care for this very much. The editing and sound are fine; however the basic plot was not conveyed well. The 2004 dawn of the dead footage does not match the other film sources and it should have been over dubbed (with better fitting music, no music or just something more atmospheric to fit), Instead you still hear the scenes somewhat uppity music.
I understand what the edits intentions were, I just do not think it was pulled off successfully. If the clips were arranged in a better order (like the news first, then Andy for a bit then back to the news, the end), and with some kind of better transition between the news and Andy then maybe. The switching between news footage and Andy kept making me think of a viewer just changing the channel on a tv. Great effort and idea, but not executed as well as it could have been – 2 stars
Horrorgrind – the virus – I got a kick out of the high camp factor and because I know how cheesy without any added effects this film already was. What I did not like about this short was that it felt like it ended in the middle of the story without a real good conclusion or even a final narration to sum it up before the credits rolled. – 2 stars
Mollo – das zombie – I am not sure why other people did not like this edit? This made sense to me and I love the way it was all put together nicely by mixing various film clips (and possible chromakey?). Very clever. 4 stars
CBB – voodoo island I liked this edit quite a bit. A very truncated edition of the
film classic ZOMBIE. In this edit, voodoo is blamed for a zombie outbreak. However what I did not like is the scene with the woman in the shower. For this particular edit it seemed to slow down the pace a bit. If that scene was shortend we would have had a better flow. 3 stars
Blueyoda – dead awake – Absolutely amazing edit that successfully combines the film Aliens with a number of other films to bring you Ripley fighting the living dead. I also recall Blueyoda getting some minor flack in the forums for ever presenting this idea. This totally blew my mind and in my view was the saving grace of this project – 5 stars
Aztek463 – school’s in session . Nicely done resident evil edit. This short worked well and played out nicely 4 stars
Tranzor- in 20 seconds I cannot review my own edit
Throwgncpr – dawn of the millennium – This was not a bad edit, but obviously to really enjoy this you need some kind of background or familiarity with the older tv show Millennium which I do not have. You get the general idea of what is going on but if you are not a fan of the show you would not fully “get” the edit
Stomachworm – 2 against the world – a very shortened version of planet terror. The only problem is that it is too short and feels very disjointed. It feels more like those old super 8 films where they took a 90 plus feature and had to sum it up in 8 mins. Not terrible, but if you never saw planet terror you would kind of be left in the dust 2 stars
Uncanny antman – surviving an undead uprising – Brilliant, short feature and everything that the Marx Brook’s zombie survival guide novel tried to accomplish and this edit does it in under 5 mins. Very enjoyable and a very fitting song to go with it. The second best edit for this project – 5 stars
The bonus shorts are great. I loved the fan made Marvel Zombies and I got a kick out of Ghostcut’s visit to ravenholm . The menu work done by Messenjah came out very nice.
Overall I am giving this disc a 3

Zombie Consecution – The True FanEdit Chronicles
I found Zombie Consecution very enjoyable. There is a wide variety of short FanEdits and considering the genre, they are all quite unique and enjoyable.
Diary Of A Dying Man is entertaining but the leap to the other characters in the shopping mall (Look over there, there is someone on the roof!) is very awkward. 3 Stars
The Virus is fun, in a cheesy way and I am sure that is the intention. Still, well edited and the credits are cool. 3 Stars
Voodoo Island is Italian cheese. It is well cut, a bit boring but gets to the point. 2 Stars
Dead Awake really starts to show some raw imagination and the first half works really well. There is some really great editing on show here, not all of it works but most does. The transition to the second action sequence, which is tinted red, is too abrupt but over-all this is a cracking FanEdit. The credits are great! 4 Stars
School’s in Session is very well cut. It begins well but sort of tails off. 3 Stars
Dawn Of The Millennium starts slow but builds nicely. There are a few awkward edits particularly with the Land Of The Dead footage. Still, imagination and daring are very much on show here! 3 Stars
In 20 Seconds. I really like this a lot. I think it is imaginative, very well edited and the cross dissolves are nicely done. The text cards are a sweet change. 4 Stars
Two Against The World is well edited and tells its story with minimum fuss. 3 Stars
Surviving an Undead Uprising is such a polished work. The editing is assured, as are the SFX’s such as the blood running down the screen. Great! It is fast and frenetic with an opening that is inspired. 5 Stars
The DVD is excellent. The Menu looks cool and is easy to navigate.
As a whole Zombie Consecution is a solid 5 because all of the FanEditors have delivered technically competent short FanEdits. Audio and Edits are faultless. Also, the fact that FanEditors have given their time to another Consecution Project deserves praise. In most cases there is real imagination, daring and talent on show.

3Raz0r – Diary of a Dying Man – 16:00
This would have worked much better without the Dawn of the Dead movie footage. The movie soundtrack in particular was very distracting and took me out of the short every time. (3 stars)
Horrorgrind – The Virus – 11:09
Great campiness but this short felt like the first and last 5 minutes of a movie slapped together. (1 star)
Mollo – Das Zombi – 16:49
This was well paced and very atmospheric. Very ingenious. One of my favorites from this consecution. (4 stars)
CBB – Voodoo Island – 15:29
Drags its feet a little but well executed. (3 stars)
Blueyoda – Dead Awake – 16:18
Can’t review or rate my own entry.
Aztek463 – School’s in Session – 15:45
This one didn’t hold my attention at all. Technically well put together I guess but the source movie is just too awful for me to give this a higher rating. (2 stars)
ThrowgnCpr – Dawn of the Millennium – 15:21
The different sources don’t mesh perfectly but the daring concept makes this one of the highlights of this consecution for me. (4 stars)
Tranzor – In 20 Seconds 4:10
This one didn’t work at all for me. The monologue cards severely lacked personality and just felt lazily put together. Animating them as if it was real-time writing might have made me give this short a higher rating. (1 star)
Stomachworm – 2 Against the World – 15:17
This felt choppy and forced. (2 stars)
Uncanny Antman – Surviving an Undead Uprising – 5:31
Great concept, great song, several great moments make this my favorite. (5 stars)
Overall, I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of originality of some of the shorts but there’s enough variety on this DVD to please just about everyone so I’ll give it 4 stars.
Review by blueyoda — January 23, 2009 @ 8:19 am
It took me two viewings to come to a final conclusion on this one…and that would be that I’m pretty happy with Consecution 2: Zombie Boogaloo.
My favourite short was, surprise surprise…Dead Awake. Like others have noted, there are a few bits and pieces that don’t quite work, but they’re buried under the weight of all the parts that worked beautifully. Just great fun, and cleverly done. I loved the ending too. Nice touch. Very ’80s horror-esque.
I also liked “Diary”, “Das Zombi”, and “Voodoo Island” …and the first half of “Virus”.
The Marvel Zombies trailer was a very cool extra…the biggest problem was that it leaves you wanting more.
The Egg was good fun, too. Let’s boogie!

Fun stuff and worth a watch, and while the Jericho sampled short was particularly invention (tranzor’s in 20 seconds), the entire DVD is worth it for BlueYoda’s Dead Awake short alone. He blew my mind.
Bonus points for the inclusion of the ‘extras’ section!
