Starship Troopers Footage

Your intention for this fanedit: The idea to do this FanEdit came while I was watching a Star Trek episode called “Arena”. In this episode Kirk fires a mortar and it struck me that it would be quite amusing if it was combined with the incredible rolling explosion from Starship Troopers.

After much thought I felt a complete Star Trek/Starship Troopers FanEdit would be impossible. Persevering, I went so far as to cut Starship Troopers to just the Bugs Shots and was surprised at how few usable ones there were.

The idea would not leave me alone, so I started to cut together some action scenes. They seemed to work, so I constructed a story around them, which I hope is amusing in itself. Also I hope this will be enjoyed for what it is and not taken at all seriously. I have edited with care so as not to reflect negatively upon the Original Classic Star Trek series, Paramount or Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers.

  1. a very very well done edit

very good a credit to gene and star trek

    Review by wyatt0502 — March 25, 2008 @ 5:52 am

  2. I thought this edit was mind blowing, just for the sole reason that everying blended together so damn well.

    Hats off to you Nick!

Sure some of the outfits change, but you could take this as time passing by (it works that way as well). In all honesty who cares? I did not even notice any of it. I was having way too much fun enjoying this edit

Sure some of the bug shots are repeated. So what? A ton of shows back in the 60’s would do similar acts to save on the budget cost. If anything it makes this even more 60’s authentic

If i had to pick one downside it was this: Towards the end, one of the bug shots still apears in a letterboxed format rather than full frame (dvd version)

I am giving this 4 1/2 fan edit stars–

Even if you are not a star trek fan (of which some of the people I showed this to are not) you can still have a good time watching this on a friday or Saturday night with friends–

I liked it. There were, though, a few issues. A few of the scenes from Starship Troopers were re-used multiple times and it was obvious. Considering, though, that you only had so much to work with I think this is somewhat excusable.

Another issue was continuity in the color of the surrounding rocks while in the caves. Star Trek was blue, SST was brown. Again, considering what you had to work with this is somewhat excusable.
Aside from that there were a few very minor continuity issues, like Sulu ordering battle-stations after Kirk already had. These were all pretty ignorable.

There were a lot of fairly clever edits, though, which I think make up for the issues.

One last thing, though. The variation in the quality of the shots was pretty noticeable. Not all of the Star Trek scenes were of equal quality, and none of those were at the level of quality of the SST scenes. If possible, adding some film grain or something to the SST scenes would probably make them fit the visual quality of the Star Trek scenes better.

I didn’t suffer any of the audio level variations that Pauley noted, but the reasons for this could vary on how we watched it. I used Quicktime with headphones.

Overall the edit was good. I was skeptical that it could be pulled off, but I was pleasantly surprised. I imagine that it took a good amount of time to choose and get all the correct Star Trek scenes together considering many of them come from different episodes. In this regard, the edit is very good. Like I said, overall the edit was good, and worth the download.

If I had to give it a number rating I’d say 3.5/5.

This edit I really enjoyed. Though I thought the editing and blending could have been better in terms of sound (for instance, you could have filtered the Starship Troopers audio to match the high treble 60s sound of the Star Trek episodes), I thought overall this was very easy to “get into” and enjoy. Of course some sequences are better than others, but it all worked really well for me. I’m not a big Trek watcher, so I couldn’t identify the Star Trek footage as much, and was thusly better convinced. I think mash-ups should be geared more toward things like this, with characters from different movies actually interacting (no offense to the first ten minutes of Batman vs Predator or Marvel 24). Good job.

  6. Just curious what’s the difference with v2.0?? Either way, a very fun watch.

    Review by jamiemark — April 29, 2008 @ 11:11 am

  7. I enjoyed this a lot. I am especially impressed with the leap of imagination that came up with the idea of combining these two in the first place. Overall, I thought the selection of clips was excellent. Like tranzor, I did not mind that some of the bug shots repeated. That was not unusual in TV of the time. The only thing I thought was out of place were the two short clips near the end that mentioned the Klingons. The Klingons did not seem to fit with the rest of the story and really had no impact on the plot. Their mention was something of a non sequitur.

Technically, the edit seemed well done to me, though I admit I have only viewed a few fan edits and don’t have a lot with which to compare this one. The audio sounded a bit off to me, especially noticable in Shatner’s dialogue. Everything sounded just a little too high in pitch. I don’t know if it is even possible, but tinting the bug cave scenes a touch blue so that they would match the Trek cave scenes better would make flipping back and forth between the two less jarring. And I think the whole film would be greatly enhanced by using the upgraded visual effects for the ship and planets from the remastered Trek episodes.

These are minor quibbles, however. Just the idea of combining Star Trek and Starship Troopers is a stroke of genius. I must admit when I initially read the description I had doubts, but the whole thing worked far better than I would have believed possible.

  8. I just noticed that the version I downloaded from Rapidshare only last night is no longer available and has been replaced by a V2.0 available exclusively on bittorrent. Makes me wish I’d waited a day. Like, jamiemark, I am curious as to what is the difference in the two.

P.S. Please note that the comments I posted a few minutes ago were about the original version and may not apply to V2.0.

    Review by blackhawk — April 29, 2008 @ 7:40 pm

  9. The changes with Star Trek BUGS V2.0 are: two shots that appeared in widescreen have been corrected. A shot of Bones has been shortened. Some bug shots have been re-edited to make it less obvious that the same shot is used so many times. The DVD also has some new extras in the form of a short comedy film with Star Trek references.

    Review by Rock Savage — April 29, 2008 @ 8:28 pm

  10. Thanks. I’ll try downloading if from bit torrent tonight. Also, I erred above when I said I had downloaded it from Rapidshare last night. I was confusing it with the fan edit, Starship Troopers Raw. I saw Star Trek: Bugs over the weekend.

  11. Version 2.0 is a great improvement and makes this great edit even more watchable. Nick Mollo is proving himself to be a great faneditor with both this and his V for Vendetta edits.

    Review by Ocarina654 — April 30, 2008 @ 12:07 am

  12. It is very easy to criticizes a Fan-Edit like this, it welcomes criticism but some criticism is leveled at aspects of this Fan-Edit that were intentional.

You can imagine how hard it was to create some semblance of a logical story-line with this type of project. The continuity inconsistencies should be expected, even enjoyed and the difference between the Starship Troopers footage and the Star Trek OT series footage was intentional. In other-words, I wanted the audience to know when the changes occur, as a sort of joke, and that is why the score changes to heighten the point. Like a punch-line. I know most Fan-Edits aspire to seamlessness but this edit purposely goes against the grain. The choice of the SFX from the Original Star Trek series as opposed the the new re-mastered SFX was also a conscious decision, as in the shuttle crash landing, it was for your amusement.

I know this is a far from perfect Fan-Edit but, I hope, that is part of it’s charm. It must be remembered that this is far from a serious piece of work. With the help of a little alcohol consumption, It is good for half an hour of laughs. I would call it a comedy of errors.

  14. Star Trek: Attack of the Stock Footage.

Maybe if you cut out the endlessly repeated shots of the bugs it might work better, but since you can’t have any interaction between Kirk and the arachnids in the same shot, it probably won’t.

  15. Please put this up on Rapidshare. Way easy to get than through a slow torrent. Thanks.

    Review by Phaota — June 11, 2008 @ 4:22 am

  16. I was quite surprised by this. Although I thought the Star Trek footage would have been pulled from some out of nowhere episode (too much to ask for obviously), the pacing works great for this one. The only things that nagged me is in comparison with the 40 year Star Trek clips, the Starship Troopers clips were far too clean, maybe aging the clips would’ve added to the authenticity. Also the extensive bug scene reuse was glaring, maybe sampling from all 3 Starship Trooper films would remedy this issue. (though the SFX in the 2 sequels are terrible in comparison, which might work better with ST:TOS – oh well).

    EXTRAS SPOILERS BELOW!!

But seriously what was up with the extras? I was completely baffled by the Space Nazis clip

    END SPOILERS ABOVE!!

  24. Very fun edit! Obviously, the footage doesn’t mesh together perfectly, and never could, but it’s the idea that counts, and this is one of the most creative I’ve seen! You can tell a ton of thought went into it. Definitely recommend viewing for any Trek fan. I give it 8/10. :)

  25. Won’t join in the quire. Too me it was all too much repetion and obvious lack of connection between what the bugs were doing and the reactions from the enterprise crew. It got better in the second half, but ultimatly this was more a fun idea than a great watch. Still giving you 6 out of 10, because I heartily approve of the idea and that you put this together for us. This was a rating from me being nice!

  26. Great idea, just not executed very well. I watched it, enjoyed it and then deleted it.

    Review by flyboy707 — December 14, 2009 @ 9:09 pm

  27. I have three minor gripes. Repeated shots, costume/prop discontinuity, edge cropping.

And that’s all I’ll say for the negative, because none of that really matters. The edit is just flat-out fun, and you really just have to let go and enjoy it. I knew I would when Mollo used the one of my favorite little moments from TOS…Kirk’s sore back.

So what are you waiting for? Download and have a breezy half hour with the Trek episode you never knew existed. Don’t wait as long as I did.

    Review by Uncanny Antman — June 26, 2010 @ 5:24 am

  28. Utterly Clever and Charming”

This edit has been on my “I really should watch this” list for years now.
And now I totally regret that I waited so long.

This was so FUN! An absolute joy to watch! I enjoyed every second of it.

I can only imagine the hours and hours and hours that went into this finding the footage to craft this all new narrative. This really must have been a work of love and passion.

If I was to nitpick (it’s what Trekkers do, eh?), I thought the closing “planet joke” came off as a little cold, cruel and out of character, but I totally understand why it was done and it works as a good closer.

And to chirp in on the original footage vs. remastered debate, if another version were ever made, I think using Remastered Clips would only enhance the viewing experience more. But that’s only my imo.

Definitely a good time and I recommend it to anyone who has not seen it and is a Trek fan.
