original film name: Blade Runner
film studio name: The Ladd Group
Date Original Film Was Released: 25 JUN 1982
Date Edit Was Released: 11 MAR 08
Original Runtime: 117 min
New Runtime: 135 min
Amount of time Cut/Added: 25 added (incl. replacement scenes and audio overlays)

Cuts removed/added/extended:

List of changes:

  1. Opens with “Reedited by ADigitalMan” logo, Blade Runner style
  2. After the company logos, a snippet of deleted “happy ending” audio over a black screen where Rachel says, “You know what I think? That we were made for each other.”
  3. “Tears in the Rain” opening credits.
  4. Original “Eye on the City” opening sequence. The “reactive eye” of the Final Cut was too damn distracting … you spend your time looking at the iris and not the reflections.
  5. Holden’s shooting cuts to black. Fade in on the advertising blimp heading downtown.
  6. Extended intro to Deckard with more voiceovers, including the bit about Holden and the bit about his ex-wife.
  7. Final Cut video of the whole Spinner ride to headquarters.
  8. Removed the “Skin-Job/N-word” voiceover … Deckard refers to them as skin jobs himself later, which makes this awkward line even more misplaced.
  9. Extended description of Leon’s abilities.
  10. Holden in the Hospital. Brief bit the next morning as Deckard flips through the files and some of the voiceover about Tyrell growing slaves.
  11. Alternate version of Leon’s hotel room.
  12. Audio of Deckard trying to find four phony ones in a city of 160 million over his ride to the apartment. Deckard runs in the rain.
  13. Deckard thinks about his wife while thumbing through photos. Note that he and his wife are on the same porch as Rachel and her mom. Hmmmmm.
  14. No Friggin Unicorns (TM). I understand the shot’s significance, but is inserted ham-fistedly and fits with nothing else in the film. It’s the midichlorians of Blade Runner. There are enough other hints and the unicorn origami has a beautiful significance all its own without needing this to distort its meaning.
  15. Alternate Esper analysis. I edited this down some. I especially like how this scene actually freezes on the same shot as Deckard’s printout. Why it was changed to something that doesn’t fit escapes me.
  16. Deckard studies the fish scale at the sushi bar.
  17. “Final Cut” video for the snake scale analysis and conversation with the snake maker.
  18. Extended bit outside of Taffey Lewis’ bar. More hockey-masked go go dancers.
  19. Bartender tells Deckard to talk to “the artists” about the snakes.
  20. Deckard wonders why a replicant would be doing snake dances while he waits to corner Zhora.
  21. Final Cut video for Zhora busting through the glass through Rachel shooting Leon.
  22. Voiceover about “it’s not real blood” added.
  23. Rachel and Deckard walk through the streets before heading back to his place.
  24. Extended sequence where Rachel watches Deckard get clean.
  25. Rachel watches Deckard sleep.
  26. Extended love scene.
  27. Return to visit Holden in the Hospital/Bryant and Gaff eavesdrop.
  28. Security check as Sebastian and Roy ascend in the elevator.
  29. “Father” remixed better than the Final Cut. Extended gore.
  30. Roy descends in the elevator, hears the computer and calls her “Mom.”
  31. Deckard is a smartass to the cop/”Good luck Blade Runner.”
  32. Removed final voiceover at Roy’s death. “Final Cut” dove sequence. Final Cut video from rooftop to the end.
  33. Gaff says “Are you sure you are a man? It’s hard to tell who’s who around here.”
  34. No happy ending.

  1. Great! I have waited something like this. No unicorn… yeeeeee

Maybe the different styles of narrating wasn’t good idea. But it good to the story line. Anyway 5/5. Great work!

  2. BR is my favourite film of all time. For years now, I’ve been trying to track down like so many others – different versions of this cult-hit. I’ve never decided whether I prefer the V/O or not, but I suspect I preferred the 92 directors cut as there was no happy ending and the unicorn scene made more sense for the ending.

With the arrival of the Final Cut – I thought we were going to see long lost deleted scenes put back in and a nice big correction and cleanup or certain things. Although I was still blown away watching the FC, I was left a bit dissapointed that Scott hadn’t put anything more in. It was just a clean up. Especially so, when I saw 45 mins of deleted and alternate scenes on the DVD’s.

Enter ADigitalMan with a cut for all tastes….well nearly anway. With the list of changes as above – this left me salivating. Downloaded and watched.

The nice thing here, is that he’s given you the option of V/O. Those who hate the dialogue can switch it off. Those who like can switch it on and there’s different version of the dialogue. I watched it with his ‘preferred’ dialogue, which adds much more Deckard narration, much more background into his character. I only noticed this go a bit strange in a couple places where the Vangelis score seems to repeat a couple bars. Sometimes Deckard seems to say something and repeat himself but in a different way….some of the narration doesn’t quite mesh – but I know this, I’m a fan. Someone watching this for the first time would never know. Plus you can watch it with the different narrations or not at all.

HOSPITAL SCENES!!!! YES!!!! The funny thing about these scenes, is that Holden makes Deckard to be a bit aloof, not altogether with it – the same thing can be said of an additional bar scene at Taffy Lewis’s.

Leon meeting Roy – much better than the previous re-used scene.

Leaving out the unicorn scene. To me, it makes no sense of the origami unicorn that Gaff leaves – I had no problem with it, but some other scenes point at Deckard being a rep here. He goes on about why a replicant would want photos and collect photos, while staring at his huge collection of photos. One of which comes to life, like Rachels. In a hospital scene, we see Gaff and Bryant watching Deckard on video as is they’re curious as to what he does. This scene makes it obvious how Gaff knows that Rachel is at Deckards apartment. Love the line ‘I spit on metaphysics Sir’. Fleshes out Gaff, changes his character.

We see Deckard wake after Rachel plays the piano…this had been left out previously.

Extended love scene – well, we get to see more skin – works for me!

Nice bit with Roy leaving the Tyrell Corporation, exclaiming ‘Mom?!’. There was line there that was in the Final Cut after Roy had killed Tyrell that would have been nice to leave in.

‘Are you sure you’re a man?’ Should have been in the Final Cut.

This cut, without using the Unicorn seems to me to say quite obviously that Dec is a rep. Let’s not forget the opening line from Rachel before credits “You know what I think? That we were made for each other.” It feels like a different film somewhat now. I don’t think it’s as dark as Scott’s Final Cut, but this feels like a more personal film in the world of Deckard. We hear his thoughts, he expresses his doubts and fears.

Technically, sound and picture are perfect. No harsh cuts, seemless.

    5/5.

  3. Good job :)

But, there is a problem with Bryant who speaks two times exactly the same line about replicants escape (first time in his office, and second time a minute later when he and Deckard are watching replicants profiles).

And the last question is – Isnt there any more scenes which can be added?

  4. Just watched this yesterday.

Great job with the production man. Nice stuff!

I really enjoyed the experience and I prefer the taking of time over parts of the film rather than rushing it.
Gives a very different feeling to the film I think.

The slight noticeable niggle with the repetition pokrak mentioned.

Regarding the including of all scenes…for me, the longer, the better.

Finally kudos for completely changing the dynamic with that great, “You know what I think? That we were made for each other.” Very good!

***** 5 Stars. Only the repetition thing annoyed me but apart from that, great.

Thanks for all your hard work ADM ;)

  5. I love the unicorn scene the way it is edited in the Directors Cut, but I think it is only inserted “hamfistedly” into the Final Cut. I also think the last line from Gaff is totally superfluous and patronising to the audience. I wouldnt have added that in. We dont need it, we get it with the unicorn origami and the infamous “glowing eyes” shot in Deckard’s apartment. I also dont like the opening voiceover. Its a little cheesy. But these are all my own views. Im a total Blade Runner nut!

Aside from those, I think this edition is a good mix of cuts.

  6. Hello, I just wanted to say that this is the most amazing fan edit I’ve ever seen.
The SW edits with new roto-scoping and animations are great also. But for creating an ultimate edition from all available sources this is 99.9% perfect. When ADM said that the 5 disk set was a fan editors dream he wasn’t kidding, and results prove it. I really think what he’s done here has raised the bar for fan editing. I am still amazed by how he got 5 different audio options synched to fit into the same extended video. The interweaving between versions that he did is just masterful.
I wasn’t particularly impressed by ADM’s earlier works, but this is another fine example of suddenly finding your voice and exceeding all the expectations. ADM has outdone Ridley on this one! I consider this the most entertaining and definitive version of them all.
Now just to counterpoint my utter amazement with this accomplishment here are a few things that I would have done differently, these are only matters of personal taste though:
I was never bothered by the unicorn scene. I thought it was pretty in at least an eye candy / disposable way. I would have preferred it to stay in.
I would rather have the unicorn than the scene of Deckerd digging in his nose, :) . I had never seen that one before, and after seeing it I could have lived without it.
I prefer the original / alternate text opening with the Websters dictionary definition of replicant instead of the preachy “…this wasn’t called murder…” version. But I do believe that is only available on the WP so would be a rough fit and thrown off the great picture quality of the rest of the project.
A few things that where my faves were as others noted the sound clip from the alt. ending. I love when she says that in that clip but I couldn’t figure out how that could be shoe horned into an FE. I like your solution. Although it is just a little hard to hear if I wasn’t already familiar with it. Mabey it should have been louder or equalized a little higher. But on the other hand its more subtle and mysterious the way it is also. Also I love how you got almost all of the out-takes short version in there, especially the alternate “70’s” intro. Just wonderful and amazing!
A 5 out of 5 if there ever was one.

    Review by robthom — November 9, 2008 @ 5:57 pm

  7. I have to say I love this edition, although I will admit to preferring the no-voiceover option.. Guess I am there with Ridley on that one.

I particularly like the alternative Esper scene. Rachael’s line, “You know what I think? That we were made for each other.” is perfect for the intro as well.. Perhaps I have seen the film so many times now that I kind of appreciate it being cut up and extended? As much as I love the cleaned and polished Final Cut, part of me feels that some of the rougher scenes fit well. Adds to the atmosphere somehow. Perhaps a few more of the beloved flaws should have been left as they were?

At first I liked the new dove scene in the final cut, but after seeing it a few times, I am thinking perhaps the original, flawed scene is better? There is something “right” about the dove flying up into the light sky. New scene has a bit too much CGI polish to it.

Although this comes pretty close to my vision of the film should be, I guess the only way I will get my perfect vision of it is to make my own edit sometime.. I suppose I should get me some ediiting tools and start learning how to use them?

I would be keen to use this edition as a basis for a further edit, however. as much of the good work has been done already.

    Things I would change..

Well, I actually kinda like the whole unicorn thing. I guess the debate is still open on whether the unicorn comes from unused footage for Legend? Ridley Scott denies it, of course, but it still seems like one hell of a coincidence..How about a Blade Runner – Unicorn Dreams Edition? Instead of chopping out the Unicorn scene, what about making a semi mash up and cutting in MORE unicorn scenes from Legend? Two unicorns galloping off together near the end might be good? It would add a slightly lighter note to the film, but whether it would be as ham fisted as the original Theatrical releases happy ending is anyone’s guess..

I think part of me would quite like to see some really radical changes to the film. Not because the film itself is imperfect. It’s just that I’d like to see it presented in a radically different way(which of course this edition does) so it might feel fresh again. What about taking some of the scenes with just Deckard in them and de-colorizing them, perhaps increasing the contrast as well? The shot that springs to mind most for this treatment would be as he enters the Bradbury, Perhaps overkill? I suspect it would be all too easy to “gild the lily”, as it were.

I am with robthom on wanting to lose the nose digging scene. Apart from my initial curiosity of “just what the hell IS that he is digging out of his nose?”, my curiosity soon wore off and I really think we might be better off without that. And I think the, “Are you sure you are a man? It’s hard to tell who’s who around here.” line is way too heavy handed and insulting to the viewer. As much as I like the idea that Deckard *might* be a replicant, I enjoy the ambiguity of not knowing for sure. The story works well either way. Perhaps the Unicorn dream is a reverie induced by Deckards knowing about Rachael’s memory implants, and the origami unicorn was left for Rachel? It’s certainly possible, even though I suspect all the evidence points to Deckard indeed being a rep himself. Ultimately though, it’s a twist that’s not essential to the story and perhaps even cheapens it a little.

All in all I love this edit and I’m glad the fan ediitng community exists to make this sort of thing possible. Good stuff. I hope to see more Blade Runner edits in the future.

  8. Just watched this and thought it was great! Technically was great, with no harsh moments.

I’ve only seen the Final Cut before, and I think having the voiceovers helped me understand what was going on a LOT better. I had to watch the movie twice before watching this version to understand how the scenes connected.

Quite an existential film, and quite a fan edit!

  10. A seminal edit, by the greatest of’em all: ADigitalMan. Even though my “review” might be biased by the fact that Blade Runner is my favorite movie, i must stress the technical brilliance of this piece, in particular the dual-layer version, with its multiple audio-tracks. For fans of Blade Runner, this is something they cannot do without, representing an entire new vision of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece. The editing is flawless, image and sound wise, with no hard cuts and incredible integration of the deleted scenes. The brilliance of this edit lies, IMHO, in the fact that it translates into a new and original viewing experience, even to those, like me, who have watched BR hundreds of times, in its numerous cuts. The best compliment i can make is that watching this made me feel almost the same as the first time i watched BR, in itself an almost life changing experience.
Two thumbs up for technical expertise and storytelling – even though the unicorn absence could be something to discuss… -, and an overall 5 stars to a 5 star faneditor.
    Bra-vo, ADM.

  13. Hey there, as a movie fand and a guy who would love to fan edit movies himself but doesn’t have all the software and doesn’t know how.
I’ve come up with a interesting possibility for a blade runner ending, Because of the significance of Batty’s speech at the end and the overall feeling you get after seeing him die, why not try see what it feels like to end there, basically end the movie in the rain with that feeling of everything that’s been instead of Decker going back to his apartment for Rachel.

  14. I would like to thank you very much for your tremendous efforts my friend.
Even though the Final Cut seemed good enough to me, this is the most COMPLETE edition ever made.
However, there are some really minor issues, dunno, maybe it was just me, but the order of the two scenes where Deckard visits Holden seems a bit confusing.
Also, some minor issues with the colors of the older scenes, like the last one where Gaff asks Deckard if he’s a man (where the picture is brown-ish), and then the next scene is blue-ish, due to the Final Cut’s post-processing.

But in the end, this is an off-the-hook, featuring 25 minutes of never-seen-before scenes, which gives the movie a more sophisticated point of view and a much slower pace (which is GOOD in my opinion for a movie like Blade Runner).

9/10 from me, well done, and thank you VERY MUCH for your effort!!
    Nice packaging too!

  15. I have been avoiding this edit ever since I first came to fanedit.org.

Why? For me, there have been soooo many commercially available versions of this movie, which I have them all, that I just wasn’t certain I wanted to watch another version. I generally don’t consider any movie a “sacred cow” – nofanedit could imrpove it in any way. I think somewhere in my sub-conscious, I have always thought that this movie should not be faneditted. Perhaps because there have been so many different versions since it was originally released.

I was battling a bout of insomnia the other week and was on the forum reading some posts and this edit was mentioned. So, I decided to at least read the reviews of the edit (which I never do before watching an edit). After reading a few edits, I found myself very intrigued and read them all. By the end, I was D/L-ing it.

I am VERY happy that I decided to finally D/L this edit. If you are reading my post, then you have probably read thru most of theones before me. This edit is definitely worth your time to download and watch – even if you have never watched this movie before, think this is a “sacred cow” movie or were never that into this movie after watching some commercial version of it.

I especially liked the option of turning on or off the voiceover; liked the editing overall (no hard cuts, audio/video near perfect) and all the extra scenes.

As much of a fan as I am of this movie and now, this edit – my only slightly negative thought: the additional scenes do slow the pace of the movie down, a lot, in some areas. However, the new scenes do add a great deal of depth to the characters and plot. I completely understand and agree, that BR is not an “action sci-fi” movie as a whole, so the slow-down doesn’t really affect the movie over all. Just wanted to mention that is slows (not bogs) down in some points.

Take it from a big fan of this movie: this edit is worth your time.

  17. I have watched it a second time and wow, for the first time I have truly enjoyed Blade runner, thank you very much! If I would have one complaint, and its not to do with the edit but the movie itself, in my opinion changing the music in the two air car scenes would help tremendously; the synthesizer style music really hurts this masterpiece, but removing it would mean remixing the the scenes with new more appropriate music, adding chatter effects from radio and engine noise in the background. That seems like hard work! In any case, my favorite version yet! Thanks a lot!

  20. Frankly, this edit is absolutely epic. ADigitalMan, this is one of the best edits I’ve seen, right along with Star Wars: Revisited. Despite having seen all the deleted scenes before, in the context of the movie, they really do come to life. Sure there are slight dips in quality, but they are forgivable considering how much more complex the story is made.

The hospital scenes are amazing. You can see how Deckard regrets having to be a Blade Runner and how he’s starting to see his own mortality. The other extended bits here and there work very well. A favorite of mine is definitely Roy right after he kills Tyrell; it seems to show his emotional/slightly human side, in order to make the viewers think.

The narration was never my favorite thing in the original Blade Runner, but with the added scenes here it works fantastically. You really get a sense of a noir-ish inner monologue and Harrison Ford’s tone and voice are really good for this. The best audio option, in my opinion, is using the voiceover from the workprint, as it indeed does seem more emotional. All in all, Deckard’s character and humanity becomes very emphasized here and I love it. For those that detest the voiceover, this excellent edit has an option for you.

    Video: 10/10
    Audio: 10/10
    Editing: 10/10
