Star Wars 30’s silent edition part 2 – Dusty version

sw30 dusty part 2by The Man Behind The Mask
This is an old looking, dusty version of the  Star Wars Original Trilogy saga. No voices, but dialogue cards, no sound effects, but only John Williams music.

Fanedit details :

  • NTSC SL DVD.
  • Video aspect ratio: 4:3.
  • Audio: 2.0 stereo and a mono “dusty” mix.
  • Each movie can be viewed separately, as a standalone episode, from the main menu.

Intention for this fanedit: Take my Star Wars 30’s serial edition and make it look old.

Here are the changes for this new version:

  • - New 4:3 ratio (including “new” camera movements by animating the 4:3 cropping)
  • - New black and white and sometime different tints (mostly depending on wich planete the action takes place)
  • - Multiple Premiere Pro filters added to the picture, including a 18 frames per second filter.
  • - Noises, scratches, vignetting, bluring effects added.
  • - A simple audio menu with the choice between stereo or a “dusty” mono mix.
  • - Very minor new edits
  • - Minor text changes. (Thanks to Ripplin, for my english is not always very good!)

Hardware and software information: Premiere Pro 2, tempgenc 4.0 Xpress, virtual dub…
Additional Comment: I think that the first version of this edit (the “clean” one) may be the most confortable way to watch it, to some people. But this new “old dusty” version had to be done. It’s the logical end of a more or less ten months project.
Time needed for the edition: 2 month for this version (10 month for the whole project. clean version part1&2, and dusty version part1&2).
persons involved: The Man Behind The Mask and Ripplin (as a helping hand for the dialogue cards)

Reminder: What is the Star Wars 30’s serial edition “clean version” ?
It’s a 4h40 long silent Star Wars movie (only Williams score), black and white, 16:9 ratio.
with dialogues cards, splited in two parts (1 DVD for the prequels, 1 DVD for the original trilogy).
Each episode can be watched as a (more or less) 45 minutes episode.
Fan editor: The Man Behind The Mask.

Additional comment: Even before the release of my Star Wars 30’s serial edition (or silent edition) the thought of doing an old looking, dusty version of this edit came to me. I wanted a simple, clean, black and white, 16:9 release first, but to complete the idea of an old silent edition of Star Wars a little more work had to be done.
First I did not want to go too far in the changing process, but after some talkings at OT.com (thanks to you all) I began to realize that since a clean version was already available, this new “dusty” version needed to be quite different.

  1. An amazing project by TMBTM. Love all the changes made to the Star Wars saga, and one can’t underestimate the amount of work put into this particular production, from changing the frame-rate to the meticulous pan and scan framing of the picture. One of the most original SW fanedits out there, and one that belongs in every SW collection. I put the Dusty Version head and shoulders above the Clean Version, but you can always get the both of them – i did! Great job.

  2. I think someone rated this edit 5/10. I’m okay with this (though I’d like to have some comments: did he/she did not like the technical aspect? the concept of silent edit itself? did he/she get simply bored watching it? editing problems? etc…)
But, for the first time I will rate one of my edit.
1- cause it needs 5 ratings to be part of the final run. and right now there are only 2 (one 9/10 and one 5/10)
2- cause I think this edit don’t worth a 5/10 rating…(Of course I’m kind of biased about that!)
3 -So I rate my edit 9/10 cause it’s more or less exactely what I in mind when I started the project and I’m very proud of it.

Since I have the right to vote, I just use it to balance a rating that I am not so agree with. (but again, to each is own).

  4. 5 stars is really undeserved for this one. Sorry, I forgot to rate this one. For me a 10 of 10.

  5. I just reset my long lost password just to rate this edit. It’s an injustice it’s received such a low score. The technical aspects of this edit are excellent, and the storytelling choices and sparse dialogue cards streamline the movies so that they fit the silent movie style perfectly. It really brings out the essence of the Star Wars story and foregrounds Williams’s wonderful music. The distressed, silent movie look is recreated with fantastic attention to detail, and really makes them so enjoyable to watch. Also, I can’t overlook how much of the original running time it was possible to remove, in order to fit this new style, and still have the plots hang together. Every beat hits perfectly, in my opinion. I can’t recommend these highly enough for someone who wants a reimagined experience of the Star Wars films. With the exception of Ep IV I may never recommend the originals over these again :-)

  6. I thought I’d already reviewed this, but apparently not. :p Well, I love it, and that’s even if I hadn’t been involved. I rated the original 4.5/5, so I guess I have to give this 5/5, as I like it better and this is the version I originally envisioned, not the clean one. It was a great idea and came off very well. A really fun way to listen to John Williams’ excellent score.

  7. I just watched the first 20 minutes and zapped through the rest of it, and I must say:
This is awesome! I really was astonished by the fact that it is really working out.
It’s just a little pity that the Cantina-Song and the dancing-aliens-song in Jabba’s cave (ROTJ) are still in it. That’s destroying my illusion of watching an old silent movie a little bit.
But who am I to judge? I didn’t even make it to make a fanedit of myself….

Great Work. I love it. Thank you, TMBTM.
