STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 Special Edition REVISITED

a TRUE FANEDIT by Adywan
Star Wars: Revisited represents perhaps the boldest and most sophisticated of any of the fan edits of Star Wars EP IV: ANH. Star Wars: Revisited not only fixes errors and technical limitations to the film that should have been made in the first SE, but gives us a whole new vision for the movie, tying it to the rest of the Star Wars saga while correcting many of the excesses of the original SE. Shots are re-mastered and restored, special effect shots are re-composited and whole new sequences are created, giving the viewer a taste of what the SE could have been.(info by sluggo)

INTENTION & EDITING DETAILS:

I have to admit that i have always liked the special editions of the original trilogy, with a few minor niggles of course, so i was so excited when the 2004 DVD release was announced. I waited in line at midnight, got my box set and raced home to watch them. switched on my cinema system (luckily the neighbours were away) , loaded the DVD and prepared to be blown away. Then the film started and my face dropped. What the hell have they done to the surround mix? OMG Luke’s saber is green & Darth’s is pink. I thought these editions would have been better than my old VHS ones. Yes the picture quality is far superior but the new faults just plain ruined them for me. So I decided that the original trilogy DVD’s need fixing but just never got round to doing it until i was amazed by the ADigitalMan/ Darth Editous Hybrid DVD . I loved it so much i wanted to make my own.

Star Wars for the 21st Century. Two years in the making, this fan edit was created by a fan for the fans.
“Star Wars: Revisited represents perhaps the boldest and most sophisticated of any of the fan edits of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Accompanied by a new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, Star Wars: Revisited provides an exciting new visit to a galaxy far, far away.” synopsis by Sluggo – Originaltrilogy.com

CUTLIST:

  • 1 – Star Wars Logo: originally it receded way too quickly so this has been slowed down to match the speed in the rest of the saga.
  • 2 – The crawl appears slightly earlier now, as it did pre ANH, so it appears at the correct music cue that Williams’ intended, and how I remember it.
  • 3 – As the camera pans down to Tatooine you now see the 3 moons instead of just 2
  • 4 – Tatooine now rotates slightly as the ships fly overhead
  • 5 – Re-coloured all lasers
  • 6 – Removed the horrible blue hazing as the stardestroyers engine come into view
  • 7 – Changed the explosion as the Tantive IV is hit to remove a lot of the smoke.
  • 8 – Added a jerk to the motion of the Tantive IV as it is hit
  • 9 – Speeded up the star field in that shot so the Tantive IV seems to be moving as fast as it did in previous shots.
  • 10 – Colour correction of the whole film to remove the blue tint. The Tantive IV’s walls are now white.
  • 11 – Re-coloured R2’s dome lights throughout the movie so they match closer to the rest of the saga. The front light now blinks from red to blue.
  • 12 – Re-edited the Tantive IV corridor battle to fix continuity issues where troopers die more than once.
  • 13- Added blaster flashes to all blasters that have them missing as they fire.
  • 14 – Added blast flashes to the troopers where they are hit
  • 15 – Corrected issues where the blasters flash as if they were fired on set but no laser bolts were present. Added the lasers to fix this throughout.
  • 16 – Fixed the jump cut where 3PO & R2 cross the corridor on the Tantive IV & the doorway explodes.
  • 17 – When Vader enters the Tantive IV a Stormtrooper lets go of the head of a dead trooper but that you can see that the actor slowly lowers his head. This has been fixed and the troopers head now drops at speed more like a dead body.
  • 18 – Added blinking lights to Vader’s chest plate
  • 19 – Vader’s eyes re-coloured to remove the red tint.
  • 20 – When 3PO is looking for R2 a trooper falls to the floor behind him as if he has been shot but there is no laser fire. Added some lasers & a flash as the trooper is hit.
  • 21 – Smoothed / fixed the jump cut as R2 extends his third leg and heads for 3PO & the one where he leaves 3PO
  • 22 – Fixed the error in the scene where Vader is strangling Antilles the trooper in the background changes position in one shot. Originally his legs are closed and his blaster is in a totally different position.
  • 23 – Fixed an FX issue when Leia is hit by the stun blaster the glow effect is missing on part of her dress.
  • 24 – In the scene where R2 presses the button to open the pod door you now see his arm retract
  • 25 – Re-coloured the interior of the escape pod to blue due to continuity issues in this scene.
  • 26 – As the escape pod blasts off it now begins to rotate as it does in the rest of the shots
  • 27 – When the imperial commander says “hold your fire” the trajectory of the escape pod has been changed so it is heading downwards and away from the ship instead or just heading straight which caused a continuity error in the next shot as we see the underbelly of the stardestroyer , which means it was heading downwards.
  • 28 – Changed the stars & stardestroyer view from inside the pod so the ship & stars now recede at different rates
  • 29 – You now see the escape pod enter the atmosphere of Tatooine.
  • 30 – Every FX shot has been either touched up or redone in some form or another, but too many to mention every one.
  • 31 – On Tatooine the escape pod canopy has been re-coloured to remove the odd blue colour
  • 32 – In the some scenes the sky has been changed to match other shots.
  • 33 – Added the sandcrawler from the OUT to replace the static shots when 3P0 thinks he is rescued
  • 34 – Completely new canyon wipe so the rocky surroundings that R2 travels through matches closer to what Tatooine looks like in the PT. Also brightened the scene slightly
  • 35 – Fixed a shot of R2 after he is captured where you see the mark of a restraining bolt before it is attached. In some previous shots it is also somewhat visible but I was unable to fix this.
  • 36 – Fixed a placement continuity error with the restraining bolt that the Jawas fix to R2
  • 37 – Added a battle droid to the scrap inside the Sandcrawler. Also brightened up the inside scenes Fixed
  • 38 – Fixed R2’s eye dome in the shot inside the sandcrawler where it looks like you can see Kenny Baker inside.
  • 39 – Inside the sandcrawler 3PO’s eyes blink as he stands. Fixed
  • 40 – Re-coloured the sky in the SE shots of the sandtroopers & Sandcrawler so the colour the sky is less saturated and closer matches the sky we see at the homestead.
  • 41 – When Beru calls to Luke as they are about to inspect the droids, bushes appear & disappear from shot to shot. Removed the bushes from the shots of Luke to fix this error.
  • 42 – Removed a wire visible coming out of 3PO’s neck while Owen talks to him at the sale
  • 43 – Removed the repeated shot of R2 & the red R5 unit to fix a continuity error. Replaced with a new shot.
  • 44 – Fixed the pink sky effect just before this scene fades out.
  • 45 – Added the missing glow from R2’s holo light in the garage.
  • 46 – Brightened & desiderated the sunset scene.
  • 47 – Fixed the colour problem in the shot where 3PO jumps as Luke activates the restraining bolt in the garage. In the 2004 DVDs this shot was sepia. An example of some very bad colour problems with these DVDs.
  • 48 – As Luke races out of the Garage to use his macrobinoculars I have added 3PO running out of the doorway to fix an error that he suddenly appears out of nowhere.
  • 49 – New macrobinocular graphics that add in 3PO. All other macrobinocular graphics changed too.
  • 50 – Removed the droids tracks from a previous take make it look like it is being pulled along by a cord.
  • 51 – When Owen shouts Luke the Treadwell droid is in a totally different place than the previous shot and a fly lands on the camera lens. Fixed both issues.
  • 52 – In the shot where the Tusken raiders see Luke’s speeder travelling through the canyon the speeder suddenly seems to speed up towards the end and looks unnatural. Recomposited the speeder to fix this.
  • 53 – Re-coloured the sky in some shots when Ben rescues Luke so it is more blue instead of very grey/ white, which it isn’t in the shot where Ben scares the Tusken raiders.
  • 54 – Smoothed the jump cut where Luke ignites the sabre in Obi-Wan’s hut
  • 55 – Added the missing ornament on Ben’s table in the shot of Leia’s hologram.
  • 56 -Added the missing cloak on the wall behind Luke as he ignites the sabre.
  • 57 – Re-edited the whole “Ben’s Home” not only to fix the continuity errors but also because the conversation about the force and Luke’s father is now all together and flows better instead of being split into 2 separate conversations. It now starts off with the viewing of the hologram and fixes the continuity problems.
  • 58 – Added a new death Star sequence prior to the conference room scene to give the death star a better reveal. It now orbits a planet in all shots up until it is reported that it is fully operational.
  • 59 – Changed the torture droids syringe arm. Removed the writings and added a laser effect.
  • 60 – Mos Eisley approach re-edited. Removed some of the creatures on the first shot & extended the path of the landspeeder so it now fully enters the town.
  • 61 – Completely removed the Ronto/ Jawa sequence.
  • 62 – Removed the probe droid hit but the worker droid.
  • 63 – Removed both Rontos from the checkpoint scene.
  • 64 – Removed the probe droid from this scene also
  • 65 – Fixed the ship that flies in front of the vaporator making it look tiny.
  • 66 – When Luke looks over to the cantina it is heavily cast in shadow but as they approach there are no shadows. This has been fixed.
  • 67 – Added facial movements to some cantina creatures.
  • 68 – In the shot where you see Ponda Babba’s severed arm I have removed the blood & replaced the hand with the hoof like one we see him with in other shots.
  • 69 -More facial movements & blinks for Greedo
  • 70 -HAN SHOOTS FIRST!! Greedo no longer shoots either.
  • 71 – Removed the Jabba scene
  • 72 – As they approach docking bay 94 you see R2 at the side of 3PO but as the camera pans and he goes out of shot you suddenly see him appear again from a different direction, which would be impossible for him to appear so quickly. Fixed this error
  • 73 – Re-added the fade wipe as they approach the falcon.
  • 74 – Added the falcons dish in the docking bay shot and expanded the docking bay.
  • 75 – Slightly re-edited the docking bay shootout to fix some continuity issues
  • 76 – Fixed the issues with Hans “wobbly” wrist as he fires
  • 77 – Added the missing middle strut to all the Falcons cockpit window scenes.
  • 78 – Added the blue glow back to the Falcons engines.
  • 79 – As the falcon escapes Tatooine it now actually does some manoeuvres instead of “listing lazily to the left”
  • 80 – New Alderaan for all the viewscreen shots
  • 81 – New Alderaan explosion
  • 82 – Re-rotoscoped all lightsabres and fixed Luke’s green & wobbly sabre during the training session.
  • 83 – Re-composited the holo chess character so they look more like holograms now.

  • 85 – Fixed the jump cut as Luke turns off his sabre.
  • 86 – Added the colour to the remotes laser that was missing from the 2004 DVD’s
  • 87 – In the scene where Vader says “I told you she would never….” he gestures after he has stopped talking. This has been fixed.
  • 88 – More asteroids when the Falcon reaches the Alderaan system
  • 89 – New docking bays for exterior shots to match the new interior ones.

  • 91 – Added a glow to the shield light to all shots of the docking bay interior.
  • 92 – Added the censored shot of the officer being hit as they break into the control room.
  • 93 – Re-coloured the displays in the control room so they are no longer black & white
  • 94 – The Death Star’s interiors are now metallic grey instead of the horrible blue.
  • 95 – When Han, Luke & chewy wait at the elevator a trooper walks past them wearing a light coloured uniform but in the next shot it is a dark uniform. Re-coloured the light uniform to fix this.
  • 96 – Added the censored shot of the officer being hit in the detention cell shootout.
  • 97 – In the final shots of this sequence a trooper falls down the stairs but only the scenery was hit. The trooper now gets hit.
  • 98 – In the scene where the stormtroopers are about to blast their way into the detention cell, the elevator door has visible signs that it has been rigged for to blast apart and looks a mess. Fixed this issue.
  • 99 – New tractor beam matte shots.
  • 100 – Recomposited the SE shot of the many stormtroopers as Han chases them to look more natural
  • 101 – New wider shot of Luke & Leia as they swing across the chasm. They now look to be a lot higher up.
  • 102 – Re-edited the lightsabre duel to give it a faster pace
  • 103 – The lightsabre impact flashes cover both characters even though it should only be visible in front of the character closest to the camera. This has been fixed
  • 104 – Removed the visible power cable from the lightsabre up Ben’s sleeve
  • 105 – As Han & chewy reach the docking bay you can see the shadows of Luke & Leia awaiting their cue. Removed the shadows.
  • 106 – Replaced the dummy of Ben as Vader kills him. You now see his face and Vader actually slices through him and you see him disappear.
  • 107 – Removed the bar holding R2’s legs in place when the droids head for the falcon
  • 108 – When Luke blasts the control panel the door blast door closes, but in the next shot it closes again. This has been fixed.
  • 109 – As the Falcon leaves the docking bay it originally left very slowly even though the engines ignite and it should have accelerated faster. It does now.
  • 110 – Fixed the wobbly holotable as Luke gets up to head to the gun port.
  • 111 – Removed the horribly bad motion blur from the shots of Luke & Han in the gun port as the TIEs approach
  • 112 – Redone the TIE battle sequence so the falcon no longer appears to be just sitting there and added a few new shots.
  • 113 – Brand new explosions for TIES in this sequence
  • 114 – Added a faster moving star field to all interior window shots of the gun port including shots that were missing a star field.
  • 115 – When 3PO is entangled in the wires after the battle, again the close up of R2 has the death star interior background. It now has the correct Falcon corridor background.
  • 116 – After the battle you now see the falcon enter hyperspace.
  • 117 – Added the Hyperspace wormhole to the cockpit sequence.
  • 118 – The Falcon now can be seen exiting hyperspace as it approaches Yavin.
  • 119 – In the shot of the Falcon as it flies over the trees on Yavin IV the clouds have been changed to matched the rest of the sequence. I’ve also added the falcons shadow on the trees as it flies over.
  • 120 – New interior shot of the Hanger bay. Removed the cardboard fighters and given the hanger greater depth.
  • 121 – Fixed the following flip shots as they step off the transport vehicle.
  • 122 – New Death Star schematics.
  • 123 – Darkened the rebel briefing scene and once it is over the lighting becomes brighter.
  • 124 – New up to date briefing room graphics for the display.
  • 125 – A lot of the Rebel pilots have Blue insignias on their helmets but there is no blue squadron in the final draft. Re-coloured all blue insignias to red.
  • 126 – The shot of Yavin & the Death star following the briefing room scene has been changed so that Yavin matches the SE Yavin
  • 127 – When we see Han loading up his reward the Y-wing in the background is missing one of its engines because only half the ship was built. This has been fixed.
  • 128 – Fixed the horrible jump cut of R2 as he is loaded into the X-Wing while Luke talks to Biggs & Red Leader.

  • 131 – As Luke leaves the temple you can now see the exterior of the temple from the rear cockpit window.
  • 132 – Re-edited all Rebel command centre shots to fix issues where the image has been flipped (you can tell because 3PO’s dent on his head keeps swapping sides) Also Leia keeps changing position.
  • 133 – Added Yavin to the rear cockpit windows of the fighters as they report in and to various shots throughout the battle.

  • 136 – Fixed few flip shots of various pilots during the battle (the microphone keeps swapping sides)
  • 137 – Added new shots throughout the sequence including a whole new TIE battle sequence
  • 138 – The rebel command centre table now includes holograms
  • 139 – The death star countdown clock & viewscreen is also a brand new updated display.
  • 140 – The window at the back of Vader’s cockpit has been blacked out because there should be no window.
  • 141 – Fixed issues where ships were missing in numerous scenes in the trench run when they should be in view. This includes both TIES & X-wings
  • 142 – Fixed the issue with the Trench approach where the shots clearly change from a flat matte to a model shot after the flash and really jumps out at you. It flows together between both sources better now. Also both times we see it they used the same shot. Each one now has slight differences to them.
  • 143 – When Vader fires at Luke and hits R2 he is actually firing beneath the X-wing but then next shot he hits R2 which would have been impossible. This issue has been fixed
  • 144 – When R2 Is hit the next shot you can see no smoke or damage through Luke’s cockpit window. This has been fixed
  • 145 – Added damage to R2s body to match the shot where he is unloaded from the X-Wing later.
  • 146 – Re-coloured bit X-wing & TIE targeting displays
  • 147 – A lot of shots throughout the Death Star battle the cockpit shots just have a plain black background. All cockpit shots now show what should be visible outside.
  • 148 – When Red Leader is killed I’ve you see an explosion but nothing makes it. I’ve added the x-wing hitting the surface.
  • 149 – Removed all of the “swinging TIES2 seen in the rear cockpit windows. The TIEs now more naturally according to the scene
  • 150 – A very slight edit to the Biggs death scene. Luke now reacts better to the death of his friend.
  • 151 – When the Falcon comes to the rescue and hits the left hand TIE fighter the laser both never actually hits the TIE fighter. This has been fixed
  • 152 – You now see the death star begin to fire as it explodes
  • 153 – New death Star explosion shot that integrates brand new footage and OUT and removed the shock wave ring.
  • 154 – When Vader spins out of control you can now see stars through his cockpit windows.
  • 155 – Chewie now gets a medal
  • 156 – Brand new end credits that include the Revisited credits and also every member of OT.com that contributed in the forums up until the second week in November 2007

There are also some other minor fixes that aren’t listed, mainly because i have lost track of exactly how much has been done.

AUDIO

  • New 5.1 audio mix track with reversed surround channels fixed & a greater surround experience. The imperial march has now been added in places. Includes mainly a remixed 2004 DVD 5.1 audio track with elements of the Belbucus’ restored monomix (many thanks Belbucus), laserdisc 5.1 audio, german 2004 5.1 mix, on set audio and new elements
  • There are quite a few differences in this mix but too many to mention so heres a few minor changes:
  • The alarm heard aboard the Tantive IV has reverted back to the original alarm that could be heard in the Mono mix.
  • When Luke first see’s the holo message in the garage scene Leia’s “help me obi-wan..” lines have now been synced to what you see on screen. It can also be heard throughout this scene and not just when we see the hologram as originally.
  • New music mix when we first see the Sandpeople to fix the horrible music cut in the original
  • When Obi-Wan scares off the Sandpeople, the Krayt dragon call has been reinserted.
  • Original Beru’s voice dub from the monomix . Now sounds more natural than the one we have become use to.
  • The fanfare has been reinserted when the x-wings begin their dive to the death star.
  • The lightsabres now have a subwoofer channel to give extra depth
  • A few alternate dialogue changes taken from both the mono mix and on set audio
  • As Luke and leia reach the chasm there is a shot of the stormtroopers as they follow them and you can hear a laser blast but no one has fired. this has been removed.
  • During the falcon / TIE dogfight there are a couple of instances where you can hear the sound of an X-Wing. these have been removed and the correct TIE engine sound can now be heard.

  1. Review by Tubes from faneditforum.com and originaltrilogy.com:

I was 100% prepared to point out every flaw I had with your edit, ady. Now that I’ve seen it, the edit is too good to shoot apart.

Excellent work all around. The changes I thought I wouldn’t be in favor of (the ROTS music in the fight scene) I ended up liking very much. The only real change that I didn’t like was the Tie attack during the Death Star battle. It breaks up the pacing a bit and the first pan shot runs too long. But hell, Biggs gets a kill and that’s enough to make up for it.

Speaking of which, one of favorite subtle change is having Luke scream “Biggs!” over the radio.

Out of all 4 of the Star Wars versions I have, yours probably ranks second, behind the GOUT DVD from 2006. Even if the picture is shoddy, I still prefer the original Star Wars over any Special Edition out there. But your edit most certainly is the best SE of Star Wars out there and damn near beats the original. Now go drink, eat, and take the rest of the year off. You’ve earned it.

  2. My (Ghostcut) review on faneditforum.com:

    That… was… JUST… incredible.

At 4PM today [Jan 20] my download finished. This is something I’ve truly been itching to watch for a long, long, time. Words can ill describe how I wanted to see this.

I opened up my media player and dragged in the file.

    The film opened.

The first thing I saw after the logo sequence (which uses the new Fox fanfare) was, well, IT. The logo, then the crawl. I allowed myself to sit back and watch it like a whole new film, and my jaw dropped.

Every laser in this film has been rotoscoped to look much more real. And real they do look. The first shot panning down from the starfield to the battle looked so much better than the Special Edition. It went inside and it actually had a longer corridor battle scene.

For a film that has cut and pruned so much, it’s amazing that it actually runs 7 minutes longer than its original time. But the subtlety lies in the fact that there’s not much radical editing – except there’s some amazing colour correction and a total remix of the soundtrack. The final battle scene of the film is the highlight.

Here nearly the whole sequence has been remastered with new special effects, lasers, colour correction, sound remixes, the works. It runs exactly the same as the original version, but it looks so much better.

And now for the downside. There are some minor spelling mistakes in the end credits. But that’s all I have to fault this utterly perfect version of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

5 out of 5 for quality, presentation, story, and in anything else you could care to name. This isn’t flattery, this is the truth. I was blown away by this presentation.

    Watch it, fool!

  3. Well, where do I begin?
I have been visiting this site for a while now and I have downloaded various different versions of the Star Wars saga. Most it has be said, have been lacking in some respect, so it was with a little trepidation that I downloaded yet another new version of the film that I enjoy so much.
Within minutes I realised that this is the DEFINITVE version of Star Wars Episode 4.
The laser blasts look far cleaner and crisp. There are several shots added during the rebel blockade attack that just add so much to the scene without being obtrusive.
The inclusion of Han’s new manuevers astounded me, as did the dog fight above the Death Star.
Also, the new schematics during the breifing on Yavin 4 and a new technical readout in the Base 1 control room looked fantastic.
What really blew me away though was the cantina sequence. They way that the faces of the background aliens now have motion just looked awesome, it added so much to the scene and it makes me wonder why Lucas et all have not gone back and done this themselves. That being said, the quality of work that this fan editor has produced is so professional that it almost looks as though ILM have given this yet another special edition tweaking.
There is so much that is good about this release that I could go on and on commenting upon all the changes but I should really just let the film speak for itself. I really cannot find any fault with it at all.
If you haven’t already, download this, burn it to disc and then replace your original Episode 4 disc – it really is that good.
Only one question remains……Will this editor now turn their attention to Episodes 5 & 6 or is that too much to ask?
If so, George Lucas take note, your films are about to get a make over and will only benefit from what this editor has to offer.
If you, the Editor, are reading this, I thank you. Your incredible work has increased my enjoyment of the film and is greatly appreciated.

  4. This is AMAZING!!!! Only two quips… 1.) The planet below the deathstar is a GREAT idea, but the graphic needs work it looks too much liek ALderaan and the colors stand out a bit much. 2.) I dont know how this could be done, BUT when Vader is walking towards the hangar bay after killing Ben, and those Blast doors close on him, what if you see his red saber punch through the door and start to cut thru a cirle ala Episode 1? Seems to me that a Blast door couldn’t stop a lightsaber right? But hey, this is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. This is pretty damn awesome. The tweaks to Greedo are stunning! Makes him apear threatening! The new footage to the Death Star escape and the final battle are well placed and ad allot of excitement. The only ngeative things I have to say are about the greying out of the Death star Interiors and surface footage. It washed out too much color for me. And why doesn’t anyone like the DVD release Jabba footage?

More notable coolness- seeing Yavin Looming over the Death star. All the new Death Star footage over Despayre(I presume). The dozens of fixes those of us who have watched it too many times have notice in the last 30 years!

So whats next? Is anyone working on fixing the cut scenes from the BTM cd’s?

  6. Hey all,

    Anyway, awesome release.

I skimmed the file and I must say, this is one helluva job. Congrats Adywan, you are a supreme Star Was geek, and I don’t mean that in an offensive way, but in the most jealous of ways possible. An awesome, awesome, awesome release.

My only gripe–I have a 96 inch 1080p projector and I want to watch this on DVD, up-converted on my Blu-Ray player and not on my 21 inch LCD screen connected to my PC. I don’t mind a small screen, but seriously, I want this one on DVD. I want to add it to my collection, right next to all my other Star Wars stuff. So…any chance of a DVD release hitting the internets??

    THE HOLLYWOOD SCREENING: RESULTS

Tonight I had some of my friends over to watch the Adywan edit. A few of them have been paying attention to the previously released footage and were greatly looking forward to it. Here was the guest list:

    - 2 Emmy winning visual effects supervisors
    - 1 Production designer
    - 1 Color timer
    - 1 primetime TV writer
    - 2 Star Wars writers (I cannot disclose what project they have worked on)

I took notes during the screening so I could report back everyone’s opinons. Here are what people thought, going from bad to mixed to good:

    WHAT THEY HATED

    - Added screams of Rebel soliders getting shot in opening.
    - The re-edited scene in Ben’s house. They recognized that it was reworked to the original script, but felt the changes made to the original were done for good reason.
    - The first establishing shot the the Death Star. Too busy, the elements don’t match and the Star Destroyer is sliding across the screen.
    - ALL music that has been added. Especially to the Lightsaber fight.
    - The added effects to the torture probe needle. Just wasn’t neccessary.
    - New lightsabers are too fat.
    - The Falcon exiting hyperspace near Yavin.
    - The big TIE fighter reveal

The items that got the most heated reactions were the Death Star establishing shot, the TIE shot and the added BG music.

    WHAT RECEIVED MIXED REACTIONS

    - Redone yellow/red blaster fire. Some liked it, some felt it was too busy.
    - Suns added to escape pod shot
    - Second Death Star establisher. Much better than first one, but planet didn’t look quite right.
    - New Death Star wireframes. It was executed well and does match the other films, but some felt it doesn’t match the look of A New Hope itself. Everyone liked the transition from the new wireframe to the original trench graphics.

    WHAT PEOPLE LOVED

    - Muzzle flashes on guns
    - Camera shake added when Blockade Runner is hit (and extra shake added to Falcon cockpit shots)
    - Rotation outside window of escape pod
    - Escape pod re-entry
    - Changes made to opening of Mos Eisley (thank god the dumb humor is gone)
    - The floating droids are gone
    - Cantina sequence
    - Greedo scene
    - Escape from Mos Eisley
    - Alderan moving into place through Death Star viewscreen
    - All shots of moving stars through Falcon cockpit
    - Seeing more asteroid remains of Alderan (although some questioned whether a belt could have formed already)
    - Vader’s hand no longer moves, pointing at Tarkin
    - TIE attack on Falcon escaping Death Star
    - Falcon now flying in Hyperspace during Han/Leia Han/Luke conversations (this was very clever, they also noticed and liked the blue tint)
    - Color corrected helmets
    - The X-wing gear-up and move towards us
    - Background ships added to battle
    - Having Yavin in the background of battle
    - The beam firing as the Death Star Explodes
    - No more shockwave!
    - Fixed the shadow on Vader’s TIE as it spins away

MOST favorite moments: Cantina & Death Star Escape

No one commented on the desaturation of the Death Star corridors, but people felt a food court and mall stores should be added in the distance during the “waiting for the elevator” shot ;-)

  8. Very, very impressive. So many tiny details that make the difference.
Especially like the minor edits that give it a more ‘modern’ pace – I always thought the original was a tad pedestrian in places.
Only minor gripe…laser bolts sometimes look too well defined around the edges, but it’s a hell of a lot better than the messy old rotoscoping.
    All-in-all, 9 out of 10!

Now if we could just get our hands on some proper deleted scenes…

    Review by Bourneville — January 25, 2008 @ 7:00 pm

  9. WOWWWW!!!!! The single most best edition of this film EVER! Most impressive.

I sure hope Lucas gets to see and appreciate this edit, and release it inplace of any further editions. This is perfect, and is what i had in mind personally that i wanted to see a fan edit to be. 11/10

    Favorite parts…

    Tie-Fighter attack at the end,
WOW! that gave me shivers seeing all those extra fighters turn up.

    Obi-Wan versus Vader,
At last, the lightsabers do the scene justice and the new ROTS music is perfectly placed for that scene. (again, another shivers down the spine moment.

Added planet in background of death star, brilliant. Makes it fit nicely with the prequels, and looked refreshing. The death star on its own originally, kinda looked stale and low budget. New effects work you did, switched off any snooze factor.

    Greedo blinks,
Fantastic! perfectly done, and it adds more realism to the rubber headed characters in the bar making them seem less like masks. Genius!

    Alderaan, BANG!!!! at last!

Luke lightsaber training, Finally, the blade is blue, not dark green.

This is what the dvd release SHOULD have been. And i urge every star wars fan to get hold of it. Also, great work for ironing out ALL the kinks.

    My 3 only gripes (minimal),

I actually quite liked the Dvd version, added scene with Han n Jabba at mos eisly, shame its missing.+ the Falcon letting rip on the troopers before it takes off.

Death star exploding, Better than usual, but still dont seem big enough, maybe a few more added fx and sounds? loved the lasers starting up though.

Lasers were excellent, mostly, but maybe a few variety of shots needed? some wider? some more glow? just to break it up a bit, and flashes on gun turrets at the end were great, but a few times they were a bit overpoweringly green. Loved the gun room green glows though.

Finally, a few creative suggestions to ponder???

Have you ever thought of adding a completely new scene, of the torpedoes going down the shaft into the deathstar? Maybe it hitting the reactor and a seizmic charge like explosion, which would of followed through the destruction of the deathstar with the blue shockwave that you have now removed. Thats something i wanted to attempt myself, but havnt tryed fanediting yet. Just an idea.

Also, i thought of adding some subtle black veins appear in the neck of the guy vader force-chockes, or a few dimples.

My main suggestion though, is PLEASE do your thing with Empire strikes back! Id love to see added at-at footage etc, maybe change a few lasers on hoth. I few explosions, maybe even the odd gunship cameo to the battle. ?

Empire is a perfect film, but i could still see more fun to be had.

All in all though WELL DONE and thanks for sharing this experience! Genius!

Oh, and have you thought of releasing it as a DVD, as opposed to xvid? i had a few probs converting it to dvd.

  10. WOW, Adywan. just WOW. I have been following this over at OT for quite some time, and had my hopes up so high, that i thought for sure I would be disappointed with something, but NO, not the case. You have achieved true perfection here. And although I can not wait for a true anamorphic original theatrical version, I am positive that your special edition is THE Star Wars that I will be watching long into the future.

Without a doubt, I think my favorite part of this edit was all of the tweeking you added to the Cantina. THIS is THE way that a special edition should have been done, and the way that the prequels should have been filmed. The subtlety is AMAZING. They are ALIVE!!! I would comment and comment on what i thought was awesome, but the list would be tremendous. The TIE fighters, the saber battle. WOW. I dont care what anyone says about that scene, the music is great, and it is an actual battle not. NOT a couple of old guys clanking sticks together.

And to end, one of my other favorite things you did was update all the hologram and displays. They were sooooo cool and so real. I dont even want to know how you accomplished these things. It was just pure wizardry.

Thank you Ady, for this wonderful gift. I have not experienced anything this cool in a long time. Thank you

  11. When I saw the special edition at the cinema it was great, but the Han and Greedo scene destroyed the film, in my opinion
(and the opinion of many other fans) so I didn’t much care for the work that George Lucas had put into the film. You have
altered my vision on the special edition. This work is outstanding. The new Death Star scenes give the battle station more
depth and the added prescence of imperial ships shows the might of the Empire. Muzzle flashes are indeed a clever addon also.
The sabre fight is more intense and more realistic in line with all the other fights throughout the saga. And the death star
battle is fantastically executed with added fight scenes giving the realism of destroying 27 Rebel ships. This is the Star Wars
movie that should be and this is the only one I will be watching. You have made a disastrous special edition into the ultimate
edition. All your tweaks have made this film the film that George Lucas should have made.

If you ever consider doing ESB, please take out the stupid hangar part that Lucas added as this is the death star and that really
crapped on that special edition, and the line they changed when Vader was leaving Bespin was also crap. Just something for you to
    consider.

Thanks for this splendid remake, Lucas should give you 10 percent of his earnings for this.

  12. This is a Great Work and is closer to what should have been the Special Edition Star Wars.

    1. Han Shoot first!!! THANK YOU!
    2. Removal of Jabba Scene. Thank You!
    3. There are so many improvements that they are to many to list. Thanks!

One scene that should still be removed is the scene when Luke meets an old friend and says “I told you I’d make it some day”. This whole scene is poorly acted and scripted and that was the reason it was dropped from the Original. Why Luke would say such a stupid line just before going on a virtual suicide mission is an anathema. Also an officer questions Luke’s ability to fly a fighter seconds before departure! Silly!

Other than that this is project is Brilliant!

George Lucas should be ashamed that a Fan-edit does what his own technicians could not do.

  18. Speechless.

For the last two days I’ve been NOTHING but speechless. It’s a self-inflicted choice, mind you. You see, I didn’t want to embarrass myself by running around like a half-raving mad lunatic screaming “Did you experience Star Wars?!?!!!! Did you?!??!!! WATCH IT NOW AND FEEL THE FORCE!!!!! MMMWHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!” I do have a social life I need to maintain and most people wouldn’t understand what I meant. That is, unless, they are part of the lucky few to have Adywan’s STAR WARS REVISITED.

I could be unoriginal and point out all about the spectacular changes that Adywan has managed to pull off in this edit but then again you’d miss a spectacular thread over at OriginalTrilogy’s forums, which is by far the most accurate account of one man’s loving devotion for Star Wars. This work represents in spirit the mature Lucas we expected to grow up with…do you remember him? He’s the bold one that harkens back to the glory days of the original Original Trilogy rather than the “delusions of grandeur” – afflicted Lucas we have been saddled with in the years since. You know the one…”special edition” this and “non-anamorphic only” that. Adywan not only manages to make the most recent “Special Edition” of Episode IV entirely enjoyable while viewing, but he also manages to inject that original “maverick filmmaker” feeling back into the film which has been lost over time and countless official Lucas re-edits. I’ll stick my neck out and dare to say this edit matches up head-to-head, toe,to-toe with the original theatrical release. I’ve watched Star Wars many times in my life, but Adywan’s version made me EXPERIENCE it.

STAR WARS REVISITED has seemingly pulled many, many divided Star Wars fans back together as the aforementioned thread at OriginalTrilogy forums will testify on it’s own accord. Most members are clamoring the spectacular work Adywan has done while others are coming out of nowhere to thank him endlessly. Judging by the OT forum thread, Adywan has managed to etch his username into the proud history of STAR WARS amongst many fans. If Lucas could have shown just as much restraint while injecting that “maverick filmmaker” feeling back into the films all Star Wars fans know and love so dearly, then there would have been no division of fans between “theatrical Original Trilogy” or “Special Edition Original Trilogy.” There’d just be a bunch of Star Wars fans waiting eagerly for the theatrical versions in acceptable quality, WITHOUT complaint of the existing Special Editions. By viewing this edit, I’ve discovered an undenable truth; Adywan has not raised the bar on editing STAR WARS. He has, in effect, become THE BAR. Lucas, if you’re out there…there’s no way you can match Adywan’s edit. Not for this, and I predict not for the forthcoming REVISITED edits for EMPIRE and RETURN. There’s only one way to top Adywan, and that’s to preserve the theatrical releases of the OT properly. Do, or do not. There is no “try.”

Adywan. The first word you’ll associate with the ONLY Original Trilogy Edits you’ll EVER NEED to own.

  19. I just finished watching the movie with my whole family, and the consensus is unanimous. This edit is GREAT! I, being the biggest Star Wars fan/nerd in my family, noticed a lot more changes than the rest of them, but we all enjoyed it and don’t really disagree with any of the changes.
Until tonight none of them were really aware of the fanediting community, or that people ever would do fanedits. I think this gave them a really good first impression!

The only complaint we had was that in the final space battle and Death Star trench run, a lot of the time it seemed that the sound effects in the out-of-cockpit shots were louder than the speech in the inside-of-cockpit shots. It was obvious, but didn’t take away from the movie.

Anyway, we loved it! Thanks for this great fanedit.

  20. Excellent work. I dont look at it as an example of how they should have done the SE but more of an example of how much technology has advanced and what can be accomplished given certain budgets (I dont know how much the 3 SE’s cost).
Yes I am picking a lot of nits below. But they are offered in the spirit of things to consider in case there is a revision of the revision… and making a great piece of work even better.

The original Obi-wan house scene should be restored. The new edits make logical sense but dont flow well.
Remove the Imperial March from the first Death Star scene and go with something subtler. It matches the other movies but doesnt work here. Also cut it after the shot of the star destroyer approaching.
However if the second part is kept change the two smaller star destroyers in the background (keep the same size) so they are in front of the death star. I am not an expert but the scale seems wrong.
Remove the added music during the roundtable discussion. The other movies did that a little too much also.

Remove the shock effect for the interrogation probe and keep it as a simple needle. People identify with needles and they are more sinister.
Change the Mos Eisley approach music. The one added for the SE never fit.
Greedo is very nicely done and Han shoots first, thank you. No nits here.
Change the class M planet to something more like Mars just to make it different from Endor.
The Millenium Falcon escape is nicely shortened from the SE. Give the first star destroyer more of an oblique view and make the other 2 star destroyers faster.
Great Alderaan explosion but make it farther away.
Change the cockpit hyperspace exit to the wormhole effect in ROTJ.
Nice asteroid field. Add two or three asteroids in the window as the TIE fighter passes.
Great addition of Han being surprised by a much large group of storm troopers but there are a too many and its a bit of overkill.
Remove the light saber duel music.
The Obi-wan death scene is good but remove the slow-mo effect. A technique used too much sometimes… like in Michael Bay movies.
Keep the last TIE sentry approaching the camera when destroyed as though it was coming in for another run.
For the Death Star simulation of Yavin and its moon use actual images and add various computer overlays to give it more of a HUD look. Maybe do something similar for Alderaan.
I never did like the Biggs scene.
Remove or use something other than the Imperial theme when the TIE’s come in. Splicing into another piece of music often doesnt work especially when the tempos are so different. Hopefully there is a better one because its an excellent entrance.
That said the entrance is long for a single shot and too different from the quick pacing. Have the ships come in faster and break it up into two or three shots.

Change the trench scanners at the briefing and the X-wings. For the X-wing’s probably the easiest thing to do is use actual trench footage and add HUD effects.
The new Death Star explosion is nice but too fast and lacks scale. After the new escape shot but before the explosion maybe stick with a distance one. The added cannon effects are ok but not needed.
Yavin is pretty cool but too blurry and the lightest oranges need to be a little brighter.

All that said, this version is the best I have seen and congratulations all around.

Oh… if/when you do ROTJ change all the Ewoks into Wookies. Just kidding ;-)

  21. The first ever fan edit I have ever seen prompted me to join th eforum today,

This is simply stunning – its how Star Wars should be seen – I enjoyed this version just as much as the first time I saw the movie back in 1978 (it took me 6 months to get in to see the movie due to demand!) Some of the new FX are wonderful – particularly that bloody missing window strut is finally there! I particularly liked the new light sabre duel and the Kenobi house re-edit. I do like the Jabba scene but can see why you cut it. I could never understand why Jabba didn’t just rotate round as Han walked behind him rather than have han walk over his tail.

Anyway I just want to say two things: Firstly to those of you abve who say “I didn’t like this, or that could have been better” – well let’s see your version because simply as a viewer – and a picky one at that – I was amazed. the flow and the picture/sound quality was brilliant, Secondly: to Adywan “THANK YOU” this is the version of Star Wars I will watch from now on

If you haven’t seen this – get it.

Finally for those of you familiar with “Fawlty Towers” you will remember one scene where Basil squats on the floor hand behind head, and bounces up and down in frustration; that’s my take on what George Lucas must have done after watching this edit!

  24. Posted by Ioz-of-Mer on The Pirate Bay:

This is, by far, my favorite version of the original Star Wars (aka “A New Hope”). This even beats the DarthEditious version in every way. The enhancements were subtly done and the corrections, such as the fixed “sheathing/extending” light-saber jump-cuts were flawlessly executed. I also appreciate the fact that the light sabers were all re-rotoscoped to make them more closely match the look, and more importantly, the hue, of the lightsabers in the other Star Wars films. The duel between Vader and Obi Wan was extended and enhanced with a perfect balance of the old and the new that still leaves me wondering how the hell they did it, and seeing the enhanced Death Star battle was like watching it again for the first time… only better. It was reminiscent of the space battle scenes of Jedi and Phantom Menace, yet it fit in seamlessly with the existing footage & soundtrack.

Many of the numerous changes are too subtle to keep track of, but most of the obvious additions were done to give the film a better sense of continuity with the various other “Episodes.” Star Wars Revisited is so “insanely great” that Lucasfilm should buy this version and release it on DVD.

For the Star Wars fan who disliked “Greedo shooting” and the added “Jabba scene” but appreciated some of the visual enhancements and corrections of the re-releases, this is the version for you.

I’m simply astounded by what I’ve seen. I don’t think there’s a proper adjective that would convey just how much better this version is from the original. It’s just amazing. Every little nuance and detail made this movie come alive for me like it was when I was six years old and watching it for the first time in the theater.

The official critics can get bent with their detractions. This version is a hundred times better than the original or the revamp.

Favorite scene: The continuous final lightsabre battle between Vader and Kenobi. It flowed so much better, and you can really see the Kendo that they practiced so hard on for this swordfight.

I’ve always felt that in the scene with Obi-Wan and Vader the fact that Obi-Wan does not light his saber until after Vader’s is symbolic of their different attitudes toward the force. It was dissapointing to see that changed.

  33. ADYWAN, Awsome definitive edition of Star Wars, as i mentioned above.

But I’ve been away from the site for a while and I just spotted the Empire strikes back trailer. OH DEAR!!!!! Seeing an army of AT-Ats come over that horizon made the hairs on my neck stand on end. CAN NOT WAIT to see that battle!!!!!!! Hope lots of new effects are added there, maybe a few gunships could join the battle and get blown away? and tie fighters? Also, the lasers from the satelite dish shaped lasers, i thought would be good if you went over them with maybe blue beam lasers like in attack of the clones battle? bit of lightning maybe? In the original, all the lasers look the same, even the big ones.

The big charged laser from the AtAt that blows up the rebel base even looked like a regular laser bolt. Would love to see a big battle makeover.

Also off topic, if you do a return of the Jedi, when vader throws his saber at luke near the end, how about have it spinning and return to vaders hand rather than him go pick it up. Not very jedi like.
I thought it would also be cool, if when luke throws the rock at the button on the wall, that kills the rancor, if he used the force to throw the rock rather than pick it up and aim manually. I have thought about this for a while and reckon its possible.

I wonder what it would be like if Luke lights vaders funeral pire with his green lightsaber instead of a burning torch? hmm. food for thought.

As for ANH, THANKS!!!!!!!!!! And you should post it up on mininova or demonoid to get more people seeing it. superfundo.org is also brilliant.

  35. Absolutely wonderful. This is Star Wars on STEROIDS!

Adywan’s epic ‘fan edit’ is a thrilling revelation in many ways, compared to the underwhelming ‘creative choices’ of what had been a much-anticipated 2004 ‘Special Edition’ DVD release by Lucasfilm. In addition to the more obvious enhancements and carefully-considered trimming, it’s the numerous SUBTLE corrections and improvements throughout this version that combine to make this edit so successful.

Although there are some additions and omissions by Adywan that not every fan may entirely agree with, if this had been the actual ‘Special Edition’ DVD release back in 2004, then most of the more expectant ones would have been very satisfied. A lot of painstaking effort has gone into this project over a long period, and it shows spectacularly. Adywan has revitalised the whole look of the movie with better overall colour-correction, than was seen on the 2004 DVD release, and has given the soundtrack a better-defined Dolby Digital 5.1 overhaul too. Best of all, he has created some amazing all-new effects which perfectly integrate into the existing visuals.

Who knows, perhaps Adywan’s efforts will inspire Lucasfilm itself to look again at what could be achieved with it’s disappointingly delayed ‘30th Anniversary Boxset’, BEFORE it’s finally released…. However, ‘Star Wars Revisited’ is now the best-looking (and sounding) version of ‘A New Hope’ for the foreseeable future, and even the mighty Lucasfilm have a task ahead if they are to impress all those that have seen the high standard set by this particularly creative edit.

And it doesn’t end here…. Suggestions are once again being considered by the talented Adywan on the OriginalTrilogy.com forum, as he currently develops his version of ‘Empire Revisited’, and eventually the rest of the Star Wars saga…. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will only enhance these for the better too in ways that will surprise.

    Star Wars is BACK!

    Review by ImperialFighter — May 31, 2008 @ 4:52 pm

  36. Honestly, what else can be said? This is phenomenal, truly a Special Edition. It is the kind of attention to detail that I had hoped the Big Guy would do when he made his own SE’s. Up close and personal, the details I just about died for; The work on Vader is outstanding, while not as shiny as in Episodes III, V and VI, it’s a great move, as well as the eyes., the Dual with Kenobi and Vader finally has the pacing and emotional impact it deserves. The Battle of Yavin.. amazing.
Overall, what I truly love about this edition, is that it allows the movie to feel ‘at home’ between the prequel and Episodes V and VI. That is to say, outside of Aunt Beru’s clothes, and some side-burns, this move no longer stands out as being filmed in the 70’s, more specifically, being limited to 70’s computer graphics technology. The computer and hologram updates, and the SCALE of battle now begin to feel correct when compared against the other movies. The little fixes are nice, the inconsistencies that have always nagged at me etc.. but it’s the scale that the movie now has that is truly makes it fantastic.

Fantastic work, can’t wait for Episode V!!!!

  37. Dear Adywan,

Thank you so much for sharing this new New Hope experience with us. It gave me the same feeling as when I went to see Star Wars with my father back in the seventies as an eight year old boy. Amazing! Keep up the good work with The Empire Strikes Back.

As a big fan of John William’s music I particularly appreciated the improved opening scene. I do believe however that the added score during the jedi lightsabre fight is unnecessary. It works quite well until Kenobi’s death but then the connection with the original soundtrack doesn’t sound right at all. Details like that can really frustrate me because the rest of your SFX-remixing-editing work is just amazing. For the same reason I really hope you will get rid of the added Bespin scenes in episode V where Vader takes his shuttle after cutting off Luke’s hand. Not only did this completely kill the rythm of the action, but more importantly, it really really messed up William’s beautiful score which was cut into pieces just to have an unnecessary piece of Imperial March completely out of tone with the rest of the music. Shame on the Makers for having allowed that kind of butchery. I count on YOU for setting things right again…

With all my admiration for a wonderful job! Continue the good work. ;-)

  38. This project is, hands down, the best of the fan edits I’ve seen thus far. The Phantom Editor’s version of Star Wars Episode I is a perfect example of what can be done with pre-existing material, however this version of Episode IV goes a step beyond that. Creating more than a simple re-edit of the existing film, Adywan went in and corrected all the “mistakes” ILM made with the 2004 DVD version (lightsabers the wrong color and shifting color every other shot, etc) as well as toned down the overused CGI additions (“Hey, look at what we can do with this software, George!”). Phenomenal job. I especially enjoyed seeing Han not only shoot first, but the only one who shoots! This version is now my preferred one. I look forward to Empire ( I have to say though, the 2004 DVD of Empire is so far my favorite of the special editions of the original trilogy…Ian McDiarmid IS Palpatine!!!) and hopefully we can look forward to Jedi as well!!

PS. Do we really have to wait another two years for Empire???

  40. I am absolutely gobsmacked!

I downloaded the PAL DVD-5 version of the movie (of which i already own) and was expecting a reasonable quality cut or edit of the entire film… but upon pressing stop after the final credits had rolled up… I was left sitting there absolutely STUNNED as to the quality of and vision of what I had just witnessed.

Firstly, on a more down-to-earth and credible basis, I have already created my own Fan-Edit of The Phantom Menace, which was no more than a re-cut with all the deleted scenes seamlessly intergrated back into the theatrical cut and logging in at an almost 6 gigabyte DivX .avi file. So I know FIRST HAND the amount of effort needed to turn out work of this nature. Yet, to generate entirely new scenes and properly execute and manipulated flawless alterations of existing scenes takes an extremely BIG talent. This is probably the foremost reason as to why I am as impressed about this edit more than I have been impressed by any edit of a movie before.

George Lucas… PAY ATTENTION TO THIS MAN!

He has single-handedly done in 2 years what a team of artists and editors could not do in not much less than that… that is, to create a movie that was in all ways, closer to the original vision that even George Lucas, I am sure, was aware of. As far as this movie goes (apart from a minor disappointment of the removal of the Jabba sequence), this too has become my preferred version of the movie.

If George Lucas doesn’t give this guy a job at ILM, then it will only help to confirm my long-held suspicions of his overall theatrical arrogance and ‘pig-headedness’ in relation to story, history and fan-appreciation.

Adywan… I commend you. You deserve to cement your place in Star Wars history with this effort. I look forward with anticipation to each and every future project you share with us, hungry fans ;-)

    THANKYOU!!!

  41. [...] There’s so much to say about this film, I can hardly do it justice, but upon discovering this I knew I just had to write my own small review. For those of you unaware, Star Wars: Revisited is a fan edit of the 2004 Special Edition release of Star Wars: A New Hope. The ultimate goal of this edit was to remove a lot of the unnecessary comedic filler that was inserted by ILM, as well as various mistakes (pink lightsabers, anyone?) and replace it with the corrections that should’ve been made when ILM got a second chance with modern equipment. If you want to check it out, you can find out plenty of information regarding how to download it here. [...]

  42. Over the past 10 years I would occasionally ask myself “Wow, I wonder if there’s someone out there who can take the Star Wars movies and cut them up into ideal versions while keeping the 100% integrity of the source picture/audio?” Yes it’s a weird question to ask one self but thankfully I won’t have to anymore. I am speechless after watching this. I just finished watching the edit on my 50″ 1080P plasma and I’m beyond astonished. I will simply NEVER watch the original version again. Instead of going on and on with how great this edit is, the simplest thing I can say is… thank you. My personal highlights of this edit are the greedo shot, imperial march implementation, and the fixing (thank goodness) of the lightsabres. The Darth/Obi fight finally has meaning now and the new music in there makes a nice connection to the god awful prequels. I can’t wait to see whats done in ESB although my real dreams are for ROTJ. In a perfect world my childhood favorite “Lapti-nek” would be re-added but I’m sure I’m the only one who loves that song hahah. Thank you, thank you……. and THANK YOU.

  43. Well, I finally finished downloading this movie (a free account on Rapidshare and an ISP download cap is a really cruddy things lol)…

My God, have you done an incredibly admirable job on this movie, Adywan!!!! You should be standing up there in the movie with Luke and the rest getting a medal LOL.

This is my first experience with a fanedit and I am not disappointed. You have given back to the fans what Lucas had taken away with his Special Editions. Granted, a lot in the special editions was phenomenal, but the bit with Jabba never worked for me in the first place (and inserting the cheezy Boba Fett cameo was retarded) and I, for one, am glad you took it out. The Alderran explosion was amazing, and I almost freaked out at your ENTIRELY new Death Star intro…I loved hearing the Imperial March in this movie.

The final dogfight was, in my opinion, what Lucas had intended in the first place…it was much more busy, much more hectic, and pulled me into it much more successfully than the original ever could. Every time you saw a character in their cockpit, you saw how much of a battle was really going on; the little audio fixes were great (“Blast it, WEDGE, where are you?” “Biggs! BIGGS!!!”; the TIE Fighter Intro to the battle was great, because is really gave the Rebels something to sh*t themselves over; the Death Star explosion was perfect (and it was a perfect “just in the nick of time” destruction).

The thing I loved most about the Death Star battle sequences was how the Rebel ships weren’t alone in the trenches…finally we got to see the TIES following them. This was a major point of contention for me and it never got fixed in the Special Editions, which was incredibly disappointing. All-in-all, I have watched just the Death Star battle scene about 5 times and I can’t seem to get tired of it…there’s always something there that I hadn’t seen the time before lol (my fave was the TIE spinning into the Death Star WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY in the background, there…brilliant touch…explosions and ships being destroyed everywhere…just freaking brilliant).

I really and honestly had my doubts as to what the quality would be, as Adywan is not a “professional,” and doesn’t have the big budget to blow on this, but all my doubts were washed away.

Granted, I have my minor gripes, but there were some serious gripes with the Official releases, so my minor gripes are of little consequences…I mean, c’mon man…HAN SHOOTS FIRST!!! What more can a Star Wars fan ask for?!!

You have given me what Star Wars should have been 10 years ago, and you should be commended. Thank you very much for replacing every other Star Wars edition I own (except for my ORIGINAL version on VHS lol).

Phenomenal…just freaking phenomenal. 500,000 stars out of 5

  44. This edit can’t be recommended enough. I’ve just about thrown out my original DVD and put this one in the box. One of the things that I really enjoyed was the music during the Obi-Wan/Darth Vader fight. I just loved it and it made a great connection to the prequels. I love seeing musical connections, and I think they work well, especially in a film like Star Wars. The prequels had amazing music, and I would love to see more of it integrated in the OT.

    Great work!

  50. Awesome!

The new death star introduction! The cantina! Han shoots first! No more stupid Jabba scene! No more slapstick in Tatooine’s streets! Helluva cool Alderaan blow-up! Hyperspace effects! Cool briefing! Epic dogfights! Even more epic death star battle! Great death star blow-up! Corrected colors!
This is almost too awesome to be true. I consider myself to be very critical… I hated the SE guts and I hated the DVD version even more. But this is almost too perfect for a fan-project! In fact, I only have a few *very* minor and nitpicky quibbles.

    1. The Twin sunset is a bit on the pink side.
    2. The most serious one: In the scene between Tarkin, Vader and Leia that leads to Alderaan’s destruction, Leia’s lines are out of synch!
    3. In the duel between Obi Wan and Vader, the lightsabers are a bit on the thick side… they stand out from the rest very starkly and look a bit painted-on.
    4. I’d have left out the Biggs-Luke reunion. It is badly played, doesn’t make much sense without their conversation on Tatooine which was cut and never returned in the SE, and slows down the pace.

But whatever, this edit still kicks the LF versions’ butts *badly*.

I am looking forward to TESB! I doubt you’ll have a go at ROTJ, though… that film is too broken even for you to fix… I mean, how to replace the cheesy dialogues, always-the-same imperial rank panels and, most of all, the Ewoks? :P

Anyway, I bet nothing is impossible for you… you’re a damn hero! :)

    Review by Tempest — August 5, 2008 @ 11:35 pm

  51. I just had the pleasure of watching this.

    Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

    Technical stuff:

Top notch menus and DVD design.
    Superb picture throughout.
    Flawless video editing.
Only MINOR sound quibbles- the (added?) music seemed a bit loud compared with the dialogue in the scene where Luke first discovers Leia’s message. And one of Chewie’s growls seemed to come way out of sync.

Other than that, I agree that the electrified needle was unnecessary. And there’s the scene where Luke and C3PO are in the Landspeeder looking for R2: C3PO is continually gesturing but there is no dialogue (I was hoping for a fix there).

I feel like an asshole even mentioning these things, considering that Adywan has far and away eclipsed any officially released version of this film. Even if he had digitally shaved Chewbacca and turned the Death Star into a giant watermelon, I would still prefer this version. Well, maybe that’s stretching, but one thing is clear: Adywan has put more care and thought into this than Lucas has in any of his restored versions.

    This is truly disturbing.

How is it that one solitary fan put together a better version of Star Wars than its progenitor, a man with boundless cash and technical resources?

Again, I’ll have to say the difference here is care and thought.

Adywan’s numerous (and ingenious) editorial and special effects changes have been well documented so I won’t rehash all of them, but my favorite has to be the subtle change at the end- He makes it appear as if Leia has presented Chewie with a medal as well. Brilliant.

I give a 5 of 5 and a slow, long bow of respect to Adywan. The Force is strong with this one.

    Download it right now.

  55. What Adywan has done here is amazing. Lucas could certainly learn a thing or three from watching this edit next time he re-releases ANH! I’m one of the only people who actually likes the Jabba scene, but I can understand why many people feel it should be deleted.

I can’t wait to see how Adywan’s Empire Strikes Back retouch turns out. There were only two things in the 2004 DVD that really annoyed me, aside from the numerous technical glitches like the lightsabers: the vader shuttle scene, and Boba Fett’s voice. The way Vader said “bring my shuttle” in the original was so much cooler, and the footage of the shuttle landing on the star destroyer does nothing but slow things down. And secondly, change Boba Fett’s voice back! The re-recording with Morrison was absolutely awful, and Boba Fett’s original voice was superior.

  57. The best fanedit I have ever seen, so professional looking. While I disagreee with a couple of changes, I agree with more than 95 percent of the alterations. What I loved the most was the new updated with the prequels-like Death Star schematics, and rebel base holo displays. Luke now has a BLUE lightsaber while training with the remote on the falcon. Vader now has blinking lights on his chest panel like the rest of the films. And these alterations are SEAMLESS. I can’t even watch my official ANH DVD anymore without it feeling so inferior. I cannot wait for ESB and ROTJ REVISITED!

  64. Well, if I could give more than five stars for effort, you’d get 10. Call me hard to please, though, but there are some things I just don’t think are improvements, and some things I think are inferior to what you’ve replaced. Some of the alterations you’ve made just aren’t necessary, because literally perfecting every perceived flaw doesn’t necessarily improve it. Making the Death Star interiors completely monchrome, tinting the inside of the escape pod blue, tinting the Death Star gun area green when lasers fire and other things like that annoyed me a bit. I did love the Greedo face animation and the Cantina is vastly improved, but for every improvement you’ve made, you’ve also committed the “crime” so many of us have accused Lucas of doing, which is making changes for the sake of it, and adding things just because you can.

All the instances of added music spoil the scenes you’ve mixed it into… the sabre duel, the Death Star conference room, they were better without it. The re-editing of the scene Ben’s house doesn’t work, because it breaks the flow of the original edit. If you had the longer takes to work with, what you were trying to do could be achieved, but it doesn’t work as it is. The big TIE reveal is over-crowded. Technically you’re brilliant, but you’ve overcooked it. The electricity on the torture droid isn’t necessary. And colouring Vader’s dark red eyes black… why? They weren’t accidentally red before, and the end of Episode III does kind of show why they’re red from the inside.

Ah well, I’m sounding harsh, and I don’t mean to, but as I said, for every improvement, there is an additional flaw. Less is more I think, like fixing jump cuts with R2, adding the Falcon firing back, adding hyperspace outside the cockpit, removing repeated Stormtrooper/Rebel soldier deaths and so on… now those things, as an editor by profession myself, I really appreciate.

    Review by Mr Ghostface — November 10, 2008 @ 11:50 pm

  65. Wow, I don’t know how you managed to create all that stuff you did, but what a monumental effort! Like a few other people, I didn’t like a few things (the Tie fighters appearing in the final battle) but wow, you’ve made so many amazing tweaks that we all need to be asking what on Earth they were thinking when they did the Special Editions. You made so many cool little changes that I’m sure I missed half of them, but then I guess that’s why watching this seemed to smooth because I wasn’t drawn to looking at little flaws.
The only real problem is that we all have to wait so long for your Empire Revisited! I can’t even bear to think how long we have to wait for Jedi. *sobs* Now that’s something I REALLY want to see fixed by a guy with your talent, I personally think it needs WAY more doing to it than A New Hope or Empire.

  75. Just watched this again over the weekend. Absolutely unreal. Adywan has created a better, more complete and more satisfying version of Episode IV than any of us could have ever dreamed of. In the process, he has redefined the meaning of the fanedit and set a whole new standard for the community. For me, the icing on this extremely delicious cake has to be the Battle of Yavin. Using some jawdroppingly authentic homemade special effects, he has clarified the geography of the battle, adding a whole new level of tension and excitement as the Death Star slowly closes in on the imperiled Rebel base. Because of this, the emotion of the sequence is also ratched up a few notches and is relentless in bringing us to the edge of our seats as Luke destroys the Death Star at the absolute last possible millisecond. And if the sight of a loyal wookiee getting long overdue recognition for his heroics doesn’t bring you to a tear or atleast make you a little misty-eyed. then you are one cold-hearted cynic indeed.

So, cheers to Adywan, a lone Brit who has put the whole Lucasfilm Empire to shame from the comfort of his living room!

    Cannot wait for Empire!

  78. all the Adywan releases are prime quality. So probably, while turning it to a DVD, your programs mixed the channels wrong. You should not encode the audio at all (as it is 5.1 ac-3 already) and use this for your DVD. But you would be better off in acquiring the true SL release or even the DL release.

  79. Adywan, you have given me back a highlight of my youth. Finally got around to watching this the other day and all I can say is bravo. When I was a kid, Star Wars was a magical experience but since the Special Editions came out, the films have lost some of their spark.
Star Wars Revisited is now the definitive version I will be watching from now on, it made me feel the way I did when the original first came out, the lightsaber fight, the Ties vs Falcon dogfight and most of all The Battle of Yarvin are exciting again. George Lucas take note, why, with all your resources and money, could you not have “fixed” your own film the way this “fan” has?
Adywan, I bow my head to you and I look forward to Empire Revisited, the shots you have released to date look amazing. Please say it is not far away.

  80. This is an extremely well done effort. Can’t really add more to what has been said, except that I enjoyed the menus and extra features. Also enjoyed the credits; especially the bit about your wife watching soaps! This is what fan editing is all about. Thank you.

  81. HOLY CRAP!!! I don’t know what I can say that hasn’t already been said. This is absolutely incredible. I never dreamed such things were possible. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 38.

  82. If you have problems with the voice acting volume being to low this is how to solve it. Thanks to boon23 for the hint about surround sound.

Problem: Voice acting is low where you can barely hears the actors talking. Sound fx are nice and loud.

Reason: In my case it is because I do not have surround sound. I only have stereo.

    Solution:

Download http://ac3filter.net/ and start AC3Filter. Go to the tab “Mixer” and increase the “Voice” volume. I think I fiddled with other things too but I don’t recall. As such I have put screen shots of all my settings on the attachment section at the bottom of this page, http://sites.google.com/site/tinpham/downloads/my-computer-setup (whoever benefits from this please post what setting were changed).

Then you use a player like VLC and it AC3Filter will intercept and fix the sound for you.

Again this is a great film and my co-worker loved that he could let his sone experience star warrs for the first time as the real star wars with updated effects and no alteration to the story.

  83. this is without a doubt the best version of “A NEW HOPE” there is !!! (suck it, george … adywan rules !!!)

i don’t see myself watching any other version ever again … any body should have a chance to watch this.

but there is one little thing i would have loved to see: the reaction of C-3PO, when luke tells the hq that he
lost R2D2 in the final battle (it was a significant part ofthe whole scene … at least to me, since i was a kid)
… but heck this version rocks. the final battle impressed me the most.

but the lightsaber-duel between OBI WAN and DARTH VADER left me really “jawdropped”.
the new music cue really kicks butt and improves the entire dramatic tense of OBI WAN
    dying on purpose.

thanks for editing out the “new” jabba”-scene (this CGI-jabba always bugged the hell out of me)

can’t wait for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (but i will, since good work takes time). i already like the teaser a lot.

    !!! 10 out of 10 for making a masterpiece a “über-masterpiece” !!!

btw, i inserted the destruction of alderaan into the movie, since i totally loved it …

  84. What can I say that hasn’t already been said? ;) I enjoy this edit thoroughly and it was fun following its progress. I have also shared it with many people. Definitely the first disc to be included in any ‘ultimate fan edit’ set. Thank you for the time and effort you’ve put into this and for sharing it with the world. :)

    Review by Ripplin — October 24, 2009 @ 7:30 pm

  85. Definitely an awesome edit that makes the SE far better than it originally was. Now, granted, I would have been happier had some more of the SE features been taken out (I’m looking at you, pointless lengthy ride into Mos Eisley), but this edit integrates them much, much better. And damn does the hyperspace blue look amazing as they escape the Death Star. The fight between Vader and Obi Wan is now just ridiculously great. It needed that BGM; I just never realized it until I saw this version. I can’t say I miss the Jabba sequence, though I’m sure someone could have animated it better to actually resemble the puppet, instead of just some sort of lumpy blob with eyes.

The extra edits added by adywan that some people have complained about – seriously? They were seamless for the most part. They added to the movie instead of cluttering it up. George Lucas couldn’t add in his crap without making it so obvious a blind man could see them; adywan, by contrast, makes them fit wonderfully. And a lot of them are nice touches, like the hyperspace sequence.

    However, a few nitpicks:

The jump when Luke activates the light saber for the first time still is noticeable, but I assume there’s only so much that can be done about that.

Obi Wan constantly using the title “Darth” during the light saber fight. That has annoyed me endlessly since the prequels and EU established it as a title, not a name. It would have been nice to have “Vader” dubbed in instead.

Otherwise? Freaking. Awesome. And yet George Lucas claims to be unable to do this.

  86. Adywan,

Even though you are male, I am male, and we are both straight, will you have my children anyway? Amazing job. I know that many, including myself are grateful. A New Hope certainly had the most desperate need for this major overhaul. I personally would be pretty content to have your version of 4 and then a nice blu-ray original version of 5 and 6, assuming Lucas ever gets around to releasing that and doesn’t spaz out again first in a vain attempt to eradicate the world of the originals. On the other hand, your handiwork on Empire sure would be nice! Especially after teasing me with a trailer for it!

  87. OK, now i’ve seen this (there’s no other word for this) masterpiece, i’m just absolutely fucking impressed…see, the thing is, i first watched the movie and then found the pdf with all the pictures of the changed scenes and stuff…and i think for more than 90% i didn’t even realize, that there’s something different…just amazing. I wished there was a german version though, i mean i’m used to watch movies in english, but most of my friends here in Austria aren’t and i really would like to show your work to them. As a long time Star Wars Fan, i have only one question: How the hell is it possible that GL and Co. weren’t able to get to the point like you did? Really man, keep on making SW Fans happy…looking forward to your Version of ESB…so long.

    Review by Luggi83 — February 15, 2010 @ 9:07 pm

  88. totally agree luggi83 – this edit is so amazing that I’d like as many people as possible to see it, yet sadly a lot of people I know who are real star wars nuts but they don’t speak english as fluently to watch these movies…. maybe if revisited gets more and more popularity there will be more than enough possible languages, a fanedit so popular that it gets fanedited by others so to speak :D

looking forward to ESB:R more than anything else concerning star wars

    Review by Sunarep — April 3, 2010 @ 6:47 pm

  89. I’ll clarify this from the get-go:

I’m not a big Star Wars fan. I haven’t even seen all the prequels, and my “first trilogy” DVD box set (the editions that include the original cuts) is yet to be opened.

So, why did I watch this particular FE (and make it my first comment here)? Word of mouth, of course, and the fact that it got promoted in “a totally new Star Wars experience” terms (read: “curiosity”). So, how did I like it?

For starters: it’s the same old experience. It’s ANH and feels like ANH. Which is, of course, a good thing for all the fans worldwide. What I consider fatal flaws within the movie and the saga would not only be really hard to fix in a fan edit, but would result in a totally different thing that fans would no doubt hate. But let me say that this feels like ANH much more than the 1997 SE did.

And, as per Adywan’s work itself, the word is… WOW! This is way more professional than lots of “real” movies out there. As I’m not as familiar with the source material to notice most of the changes, having watched ANH no more than four times (three the original, one the ‘97), I had to double-check to try to find the stitches all the time. Unsuccessfully. This is seamless! It’s an injustice Adywan is not working as a film editor for a living (in case he isn’t, of course). Fans of the saga may spot little things they would prefer to be done other way, as it’s usually the case with the “fanboy” genre, but it’s all fine with me.

However, since I don’t favor CGIed up revisionism, this has not become my favorite ANH. The good old, analogic, model-ridden 1977 original still comes on top. Yet this comes second, and it’s far superior to the official Lucasfilm tinkering.

As such, seen not as great SW but as great craftsmanship, I rate this:

    Video: 10/10
    Audio: 10/10
    DVD menu/extras: 10/10
Improvement: 5/10 over the 1977, 10/10 over the 1997 SE
    Overall: 10/10

  90. Wow. Where to start? How do I begin to write a review on an experience that has given me a feeling I haven’t had since I was a child. Watching Adywan’s edit I felt like I was seeing Episode IV for the first time. This was the first Fan Edit I’ve seen, and I can easily say that Adywan has gotten me hooked.

    First off, Adywan has done a masterful job of color correction. My jaw dropped in the first 5 minutes, and stayed there until the lights came on. Really, there are just so many things that I loved about this edit that I can’t list them all. I’ll just highlight a few of my favorite parts;

The Cantina scene. Amazing, well done really. It really captured the feel of the Cantina that I think other edits are missing.
The Greedo scene was awesome. At that point I was just juiced because I knew I was in for a treat.
I loved the shots of the Death Star with the planets.
Adding the wormhole in the falcon’s cockpit was a touch of genius!
The final battle was just simply fan-f*%#@!g-tastic. I’m running out of adjectives here, this edit is so good.
And the fact that Chewie gets a medal? Priceless. Adywan has thought of everything.

    I’m so very happy that this was the first Fan Edit I saw. I can’t say enough. But I can sum it all up;

This is THE definitive version of Star Wars Episode IV. WATCH THIS MOVIE!!

Thank you Adywan, for such an entertaining experience. Your hard work is an inspiration to us all. Please edit Empire Strikes Back!

    Video: 10/10
    Audio: 10/10
Improvement: 10/10 over all other versions
    Overall: 10/10

  91. In this very case, I’m a man of few words. I have seen the special edition trilogy on vhs, I saw them again on the ‘other’ special edition release on dvd, and now Adywan’s… ANH Revisited has earned its spot on my shelve right next to his ‘official’ brothers and sisters, and the other fanedits (ESB 30th anniversary theatrical edition comes to mind).
10/10 hands down! Soooo, Ady, any news on a more detailed ESBR release? :)

  92. I gave this edit a low rating because it was almost the same as the original. Sure, many good effects were put in such as adding extra tie fighters and making the lightsaber blue instead of a greenish tint. But, it wasnt enough to warrant a rating over 5 stars. The changes seemed to be merely touch-ups to the original.

  93. The audio was good. The video was good. The cuts were seamless. I just dont think there was enough work put in to give more than 5 stars. A good example of a great edit would be Terminator 3: The coming storm, done by Uncanny Antman. Im a huuggge star wars fan and this didnt cut it for me. If the star rating is based on my opinion and liking of the edit, then I did what was asked of me.

  94. This is a WONDERFUL edit of A New Hope.

The audio quality, cuts and transitions are excellent; the video quality, cuts and transitions are excellent.

I didn’t understand at first why the severed arm in the Cantina was changed to a flipper, but after reading about the changes on here — “replaced the hand with the hoof like one we see him with in other shots” — I went back and frame by frame watched for his hand, and… sure enough, his hand is a flipper, not furry nor with fingers: http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/8645/26467704.png …so with that I say, well done all around!

In any event, I can’t seem to readily locate a copy of the Purist edition (which I would like to have, for the sake of completeness in my collection.) It appears to me that the links currently provided at FanEdit.info only have the single layer and dual layer formats of the the standard Revisited version. The is a torrent out there, but it doesn’t have any seeders at the moment. Can someone direct me (via pm is also acceptable) to a .dlc of the NTSC format Purist edition?
