Concept: With a Rotten Tomatoes meter of 95% freshness no question THE DARK KNIGHT is the best Batman movie ever, the best superhero movie ever and the best movie of 2008.
But there are some opportunities for a fanedit.
Initially, the story unwinds with poise keeping up with the “A” elements, however, at about midway, new plots are introduced diluting some otherwise well-earned momentum. It’s a long movie anyway, but after that midpoint, it just begins to feel relentless and a little tedious.
The action sequences are a tad incoherent. Specially the one in the building with the Doctors and Hostages and Sonar and Lucious Fox.
The same with the Armoured truck chase scene.
My attention went also to Harvey Dent whose story doesn’t get rolling until well into Act 3. Often the comment is that Harvey’s story should have been saved for another movie, mainly because by the time it is revealed the audience is exhausted. But THE DARK KNIGHT is really Harvey’s movie. Neither Batman nor the Joker are changed by the end of the movie to the extent that Harvey is transformed.

This is THE DARK KNIGHT and a simple trim job as mentioned in the “Cut/Added” would not suffice.
And since this is Christopher Nolan, I decide that for a NEW ride and to address the Two-Face issue I would completely eschew the linear storytelling and replace it with Nolan’s own style from MEMENTO.
the film is now structured backwards and forwards, so that Harvey’s past and future appear to be interconnected from both ends, directly affecting his present.

This nonlinear narrative structure challenges the conventional rules of plot construction and defies the standard notion that a film’s scenes must advance chronologically. It makes the audiences understand the film in a new way by making new cause-and-effect connections between the scenes. Each beat of information must relate to what comes before and after, even if a scene transcends the chronological order of time. In nonlinear films, relationships created between the various time segments form a specific meaning when taken all together.

The film’s events unfold in two separate, alternating narratives. One in color, and the other in black and white.
The black and white sections are told in Forward Chronological order.
The color sequences are in Reverse Chronological order.
The result is hopefully a new ride with some wonderful fresh thrills along the way.

  1. Jorge had sent me a preview disc that was very close to a final version a short time back. This review (that I wrote at the time minus some other now expired information) is based on this preview version. I am aware however that not much of anything itself was changed in the final edit from the version that I saw:

I will be honest in that I had no idea what to expect. Right off the bat I knew I was in for something good.
when the film starts I did a double take but I knew it was setting things up for how this edit was going to be presented. Jorge’s complete re-telling was brilliant. I also loved the use of black and white mixed with color. I do not have a 5.1 setup but the audio was perfectly balanced on my 2.0 down mix. The video quality of course was excellent with no hard cuts to be found

.The story was very coherent and even if an individual has never seen the film before, by the time the edit is finished they will understand completely what they just have viewed.

The black and white mixed with color scenes were great, on occasion I was able to see some color that he did not want mixed in, but assuming there was no other way around it. It would happen every now and then with a frame or two (more noticeable when the joker crashes the party scene and you can see the flashes of his regular skin). Very minor and not distracting, but since this is a review, I did notice it

the layer break also was set well. I used pgcedit and img burn to burn my DL discs. It gave the best spot right before the officer riding with Gordon reveals his name and this is the tie-in with his wife at the hospital. It worked well. If it had been one second more that line would have been fucked by the break.

in short this is a completely alternate re-telling of this epic film and it was done extremely well

One of the better fanedits I have ever seen

  2. As soon as I read about combining Chris Nolans two best films I was hooked.

the idea is very good and well executed. There are no plot holes because of deleted scenes. Even things like gordon not dying flow extraordinarily well. At first I thought “wow that’s not very believeable, bats goes to maroni and right after maroni’s “lesson” he wants to turn himself in” but in this edit it seems more like batman understood maroni and planned everything with dent – at least for me.

the flashbacks from batman begins were brilliantly placed. everytime you used something from Batman begins i wondered why it was inserted, but those flashbacks were one of the highlights for me, especially the “we burned the forrest down flashback” – the rachel as a kid flashback really moved me and brought back the knowledge of how long and how close bruce knew rachel

there are some audio issues when it comes to certain transitions for example the music is louder than the talking, but I don’t want to complain to much.
The story is interestingly told and the best parts are beginning and end. In the beginning it’s exactly like memento, you don’t know what the hell is going on, than black and white, ok this happened, back to dent, ah ok he was threatening the boy flashback and so forth – a fun puzzle but in the middle part it gets very confusing because the jumping forth and backwards makes it hard to remember all the plotlines (i am talking as if i would have seen dark knight for the first time) there is just an awful lot going on, but jorge managed the flow of the finale. The decision about maroni was great and i started laughing after the cut from bar to maroni falling – very good.

another great cut is when bats and rachel crash on the car and we jump to harvey in the hospital

the black and white and colour contrast worked and also the joker’s mouth is a nice touch that makes this enemy stand out.

    SPOILERS FOR THE NEW ENDING

This the only thing that really bugged me. The ending per se is a well made choice to cut from gordon to batman begins when they talk about the joker. it bring back batman and gordon’s partnership, makes us clear how they underestimated everything and what it would cost. I was prepared that it would end with rachel’s letter and bruce apolgizing to harvey, but the way it turned out was handled perfectly.
my complaint is that the joker is the person that suffers most from this edit. Oneof the reasons i like Dark Knight so much is because of the juggernaught the joker becomes, at first he’s nobody and he gets more and more dangerous. By making dark knight memento style the joker looses steam and just appears now and then. Also the gambol scene seemed out of place as the line about getting rid of the joker was cut – don’t know why. but know it seems just like a random kill that doesn’t have a direct effect on the story.
This adds to the afforementioned confusion because in memento it was more like a connect the dots watching experience, here, apparently because of the source material not everything flows from a to b which is not the editor’s fault.

I just felt that focusing the ending on gordon batman and joker took away from the harvey dent angle of the edit

    SPOILERS END HERE

Anyway I had such a good time watching this edit and the technical execution is great, the feel is different and fresh, everything i could have hoped for

    10 out of 10

P.S.: damn it I am using a similar credit scene the edit I am working on… :D

  3. And an incredibly good edit, by the way… Jorge has once again shown himself to be a master of the ancient discipline of fanediting. This edit is a dazzling spectacle of true genius! Yes, GENIUS! And no less than, My Friends! :D

Seriously though, you might think The Dark Knight is so good, it doesn’t need an edit. And you’re right… But, with “The Dark Knight: Remixed”, Jorge provides a whole new experience of this blockbuster masterpiece and has created a nice alternative to set on the shelf right next to your Dark Knight DVD.

Sometimes you’ll feel like revisiting the original…and sometimes you’ll feel like mixing it up with REMIXED!

  4. The Dark Knight – Remixed by Jorge

    review by boon23

    Prologue:
Unlike the masses I was not a huge fan of the original movie. Maybe my expectations were too high or maybe the movie was too weak. I liked the Joker, but I did not really like Batman in this one, I hated how Harvey Two Face was handled and despite the movie being long it seemed to come short all the time.
Jorge’s concept fascinated me from the very beginning, because it was a bold one.
As for all my reviews: this is just my personal opinion of this fanedit. I cannot tell anybody else, if he or she will experience it in the same way or the opposite. So my review is not objective and does not reflect the opinion of fanedit.org.

    !!!!This review contains heavy spoilers!!!

    The edit:
It took me a while to get into the completely changed mood for this movie. The idea of focusing the story on the Rachel/Harvey event from both the future and the past was artsy and took away the thrill of the movie, only to replace it with something else, which happened after the confusion settled down: fascination.
What Jorge managed with his fanedit is to exactly address what bothered me about the original: a flat batman and a flat presentation of Harvey Two Face. Both of them get in this one what they rightfully deserve: scenes with impact and subtlety. The madness the Joker brings on Gothham is so much clearer displayed, the helplessness of Batman so much better delivered. I cannot else but applaud this fanedit and the man behind it: Jorge. You have done an outstanding job.
While I believe the masses might not find the approach for this take as it is no longer a dumb action movie, it gave me a version I truly enjoyed.
I liked it a lot that the Joker did not die and neither did Gordon.
The editing was done masterfully, both visual and sound-wise. So many changes, such an incredible amount of work. I could see the inspiration that came from the Batman Consecution project (Bat Memento and Mayhem & Mistletoe). Yet this was a complete and consistent take on a movie. The inclusion of B/W scenes along with the red showing was great.
    little problems:
The very tiny flaws (like red showing on other parts than Joker’s face) could be totally ignored.
The ferries part came a bit short. Some scenes were still not great (like when Batman frees the hostages). I found the inclusion of the Batman Begins scenes good, but not all of them necessary (Raz Al Ghul was great, as was the conclusion with Gordon). At least one time I noticed the color difference of BB and DK.
This was an awesome fanedit and I cannot but deeply bow to the skill of Jorge.
    editing: 10 of 10,
    entertainment: 9 of 10 (original 7 of 10)

    Image and video quality:

Image and video quality were great, especially when taking into account on what a huge level things were changed.
    Video quality: 10 of 10

    Audio editing and audio quality:
The audio editing was superb, especially taking into account on what a huge level things were changed.
    audio editing: 10 of 10
    audio quality: 10 of 10

    presentation:
This fanedit comes with all a fan can ask for. Nice bonus material, a lot of Jorge’s fanedit trailers, great menus (except for the still rather bad looking bonus and scene selection menus). The included cover art is nice.
DVD menus: 9 of 10, cover art 8 of 10, extras: 10 of 10, existence of menus, chapters and extras: 10 of 10

This results in a 9 of 10 rating from me for presentation.

    Final result: 10 of 10.
    Highly recommended.

  5. Well its hard to say much more after these great comments, but I shall try. First I thought that the Dark Knight was a great movie and I agree probably the best in 2008, your version is a touch of genius, how you manage to switch scenes so often seemlessly is amazing, the mixture of BW and colour was also superb. This is truly the Harvey Dent story that never came out of the original due to the Joker. Loved the
scenes from Batman Begins especially the surprise ending. It had me completely enthralled and it was almost like watching a complete new movie. Like the DVD menu especially the Graphic novel in the extras part. For video and audeo 10/10 if I could give it 11/10 I would. Marvelous edit Jorge.

  6. I finally downloaded the latest DVD version of this and I have to say, speaking not only as a Batman fan but as a movie fan. This is by far the greatest fan-edit I’ve ever seen. Yeah, this took the title of Pulp Fiction: Vince and Butch away for me. I loved it, loved it, loved it. Part of that love, other than the perfect reconstruction of the movie itself, is the DVD. It feels as if you’re watching an actual DVD and not something that was edited by someone out there. (I absolutely cannot wait to see Italian Stallion, Jorge!). Quite simply, this movie is a 10/10 and has earned a spot next to my Batman collection of DVDs rather than my fan-edit collection. It’s that damn good. Congrats, Jorge. This was quite the accomplishment.

The Dark Knight: Remixed is the definitive FanEdit. If there was ever one you needed to see, this one is it.

  7. This is a fantastic edit of an already outstanding film, due to its non-liner storytelling style it may be hard to follow for anyone who hasn’t seen the original but then again odds are that most people who watch it will have seen original movie anyway. The way the film is repackaged gives a completely fresh experience and in some ways its better for re watching the film than the official version. I especially liked the interchange into B&W for some scenes which along with the narrative gave the film a more graphic novel theme.

  8. There’s a lot of hype surrounding this release. Is it worth all the raves?

Let me just put this out there…

Welcome to the next level of fanediting.

There are fanedits that add and delete scenes. Others that create Special Editions.

Then there is the work that Jorge has put into this effort, which is the next evolution of fanediting.

Fans of MEMENTO and THE DARK KNIGHT are in for a treat. The masterwork of Mr. Nolan gets a whole new upgrade and remix — and it’s unlike any fanedit or version of DARK KNIGHT you are to encounter. That’s what makes this release so unique and exciting…it could only come from the mind of Jorge, who had not only the brilliant idea to pull it off, but the skills and patience to really make it shine.

    Backwards? Really?

You bet. And it’s a facinating way to re-watch a film you are familiar with. The Black and White scenes are beautiful…with plenty of red spilling over. The concept really brings out new drama and elements. Sure some scenes and lines are missing…it is a remix afterall…but I think when you get through the ending credits (also fantastic) you will understand why Jorge made the choices he did. The addition of scenes from BATMAN BEGINS also brings a wonderful layer to the events in DARK KNIGHT.

If you’ve seen DARK KNIGHT a few times and want something fresh for your next viewing…this is the one.

If you’ve never seen a fanedit and are curious what the fuss is all about…you will find answers here.

If you’ve seen a fair share of fanedits and are looking for something fresh, exciting and new…look no further.

This one certainly sets a new bar for creativity.

    Well played Jorge.

  9. Phenomenal job!!
A thoroughly entertaining re-organization/edit of this already great movie. This is from a true skeptic. The use of B&W was simplistic, but at the same time ingenious, as well as the incorporation of the scenes from Batman Begins. I wish I could go back and watch this version first, not knowing what happens in the original, but I didn’t notice any plot holes. I cannot envision giving this any less than a 9 for entertainment value and plot. Minus 1 because while I enjoyed the edit immensely, I do still enjoy the original more.

As to the cuts, the A/V, and technical stuff, my untrained eye did not notice anything wacky. I’m thinking I can’t justify docking any points there. So if I take a shortcut and use two highly generalized criteria, it’s a 9.5.

    Amazing!!

    Review by buddythegoon — May 8, 2009 @ 10:09 pm

  10. I was really waiting for this…mainly downloading time=). I wasn’t expecting anythin. I waited to see it and make my own opinion. Of course high rating of this FE made me looking forward even more.

The storytelling was awesome. Removed subplots didn’t missed. In the middle of the movie I was really confused. With mess you made in chronologic would able it and you’ve done well. Technically (authoring, compression, sound) is with one word PERFECT. No hard a/v cuts.

Great stuff(over the other “usual” great=):
    1) Removing of car explosion when Two-Face kills Maroni’s driver.
    2) Highway chase, trimming helicopter fall.
    3) Thanks for letting speech at Harvey’s party (I like Bale’s speeches when he talks like drung=)
    4) Ending at right time and right place.
    5) Scientist-clowns scene

There were only few things I didn’t like
    1) bank robbery – blur effect. It wasn’t necessary to use it and sorry I really don’t like it.
    2) When they take body to Gambol’s there are few moments where is coloured more in picture than Joker’s face and it doesn’t look like intention/idea.

Few advices and opinions for upgrad:
    1) Court scene could be shortened in the end.
    2) Try remove cheesy lines. Art shouldn’t be created to liked by everyone.
    3) Cut Rachel/Bruce dialog at Harvey’s party

If I remember anything more, I’ll write.
After all you made great edit with new idea, storytelling and importance of each character. This is completely new. For reviewing it would be even better see this earlier than original movie.
If you wanna to make HD revision, I’ll help.

    9/10

    Review by Harman — May 14, 2009 @ 5:41 pm

  11. Oh man! what a awesome edit. I had to watch it 2 times. The 1st time it was ok and thought to myself, I’ll just stick with the original. I think it was all due to all the scenes with Two Face (not a fan). SO I decided to give it one more try , just because of how it was setup. The black & white scenes going in order and the colored going backwards. Now I love it and will watch this edit and the original just for a different feel. I have watched 5 fan edits so far and none come close to this one. If you just got hooked or just found this site, start with this fan edit.

    Score: 10/10

    Review by rmania — May 22, 2009 @ 6:41 am

  12. This was beyond awesome. Jorge took fanediting to a new level when he did this film. This is what fanediting is about- not just reinserting scenes and changing how a movie plays out, but having the creativity to totally change the way we see and think about a movie.

Like others, I had to do a double take when I first started watching it as it switched between the color and b&w scenes but after a short time, I got used to it. I also found no problems at all with the audio or video, and the dvd menus and options themselves were done with the work of a professional. I don’t know if the slight showing of coloring in the b&w scenes was intentional or due to the editing, but i really liked how it made parts stand out, especially the b&w scenes of the Joker.

In closing, if you loved TDK, you should check this out for a different take on this movie.
    10/10.

  13. I just finished watching. I’m not sure how I can put into writing how amazing the editing was, phenomenal idea and execution. While I wouldn’t say I enjoyed more than the movie its most defiantly a unique perspective to watch. Now, I just need to get the dvd version downloaded because the avi version was kind of hard to watch with all of the darkness. This is a great companion piece to the original, this will probably be the first one I make the case for and the whole 9 yards.

  14. I heard people said “who the hell is this Jorge guy to think he can make a better movie out of TDK?”.
Well to me Jorge did not make a better movie, it is a GREAT companion to the original.
It took me a long time to get into it though. I like when a movie loose me sometime, but here I realy had difficulties following it for a good 20 minutes.
    For that reason: -1
But in the end it’s still a solid 9/10!

  15. It took me so long to get into the strange style that I almost quit. It’s an interesting take and very well done, but I prefer the original a lot. 7 stars.

    Review by xGrind — September 2, 2009 @ 9:48 am

  16. Personally I found the original highly over-rated. Not that it wasn’t a good film, I just don’t think it’s brilliant. The things that bug me most?

That stupid sonar that just happens to be built into the mobile phones of all of Gotham without the phone companies even knowing (good thing all the SWAT teams, hostages and the Joker’s henchmen had their mobile phones on or Batman would have had considerable difficulty navigating his way through the derelict building they were in!)

Batman’s amazing use of technology to recreate the way a bullet breaks apart in brick, reconfigure it (well, it’s not as if Gordon would want the brick as part of his crime scene evidence!) and get a perfect fingerprint.

The stupid to-ing and fro-ing on the boats with the shall we blow the other boat up, shall we trust them. Oh, and don’t get me started on the prison guard carrying a shotgun standing in the middle of a bunch of prisoners shackled with their hands in front of them. Because the dregs of society really do behave just because there’s a bomb on their boat!

Okay, so many words used and still no comment on this edit. Well, kudos to Jorge. Most of what I disliked has been dropped and the only scenes that remained were necessary for the sensible telling of the tale. I don’t know if this was by design because Jorge feels the way I do about these plot threads or a happy coincidence, but I’m not complaining.

This is a bold re-telling and given the challenge that the editor set and the limitations that it brings I feel it has been handsomely achieved. But the film doesn’t lend itself to the narrative devices in the way that Memento did – that was a story about one guy who started each scene afresh and the fact that it was told in reverse made sense because we go through the motions of not having his memory. The Dark Knight has too much going on for the same device to work and many of the segments felt too much like segments and less like scenes, exactly as they had been in the original cut. Not that this is necessarily bad, but some segments felt overlong or completely out of context (the people and convicts being shunted onto the boats and finding the bombs stands out as a prime example of a guilty passage for me). The two halves of the film don’t necessarily play towards a common end point and the scenes on which this edit finish feel tacked on as though a Hollywood executive had finished the script (instead of just manipulating the mid-section as in the original cut).

I can’t help but feel I’m giving a negative vibe which is unfair. This is a fantastic piece of work. The editing is top notch and the new structure remains coherent throughout which I’ve no doubt must have been a nightmare writing task to get right. A couple of plot threads are left floating but not so as I’d worry over them. And some cuts between the two halves of the film were fantastic – the Rachel rescue is an example that literally took my breath away.

As mentioned by others this release sets a new direction for Fanedits. I can’t help wondering, given that Harvey Dent/Two Face and the Joker have relatively insular plots that only overlap in one scene but run in parallel with each other and Bruce Wayne/Batman’s journey, if maybe a segmented approach akin to Pulp Fiction might work, with Dent and Two Face treated as separate characters, narratively speaking. Bookended by Alfred’s wisdom and the use of the Batman Begins scenes I think even more of the chaff could be cut leaving a lean Batmovie that does justice to all concerned. Maybe an even less rigid approach to the chronology could produce some really exciting results.

Either way, tacky though it sounds, I’d love to see the movie end on a positive vibe despite knowing what comes next for the characters. Like watching Vincent Vega strut out of the diner in Pulp Fiction not knowing Butch is gonna gun him down soon, or seeing Monica Belluci laying on the grass at the end of Irreversible enjoying life.

  17. My friends were having a get together, and couldn’t decide on a movie… so I produced this DVD from my pocket, and we had a little screening party. 5 of us altogether, seeing your edit displayed with a very nice digital projector.

My 4 friends enjoyed the film… but from their comments I gathered that they enjoyed it mostly because they liked seeing scenes from Batman, and were unable to appreciate that this had a different perspective, they just thought of it as watching their favorite scenes in a different order.

I thought it was brilliant. Visually I was surprised to find that I preferred the black and white treatment to the original color. As for the order of scenes, I felt this was a novel solution to an overlong movie. In the original by the time I got to the end I was having trouble keeping track of where we had started out. Seeing cause and effect placed side-by-side in this chronology was a great experience for me.

It was an interesting effect of the non-chronological editing that it was very invisible that scenes had been cut. When we finished my friends had not even remembered Gordon’s “death.” Perhaps this was even *too* invisible for some, one of my friends remarked that the movie (referring to both yours and the original) was simply too long. She had not noticed at all that scenes were cut, let alone 32 minutes.

  19. Very creative idea and interesting alternative way to watch the movie. My only 2 cents that hasn’t already been said is that I can’t help but wonder if there were another way to achieve the same essential results of shifting the focus to Harvey Dent without quite as many chronological jumps as there were. I suspect that the reason this edit works is because we have all seen the original a number of times. If this edit were the only version I had ever seen, I think it would have been very confusing.

EDITING: I have watched this edit a few times now, NEVER once in those viewings has anything caught my eye as being off. Everything has been executed perfectly.

  22. PHENOMENAL!

This may easily be the Best Fan Edit I have ever watched!

I had the distinct honor of the seeing the rough cut of this masterpiece more than a year ago.
So I feel like a total schmuck that it took me this long to actually sit down
and watch the final DVD version.

The alternating timelines thru the use of colour and b&W,
the moving of Harvey Dent to the forefront
while maintaining the powerful psycho presence of the Joker,
the seemless merging of past and present….

…this was just a beautiful experience.

While I am not a huge fan of the memento-mix style,
here is works perfectly, and if anything,
    magnifies the power and tragedy
of Bruce, Harvey, Gordon and Rachel.

    Bravo Jorge.

ps. I WANT MY ITALIAN STALLION!!!!!
