   Sounds good man but there’s no one seeding this. Also you might want to edit you running time. I think you mean to say that the original running time is 1h37 mins. and not 137 mins. Same thing goes for the new running time.

   The film felt much more watchable with a lot of the junk that was edited out. Most of the characters could have done with more characterization, but then again that’s not really Mollo’s fault, is it?

   Romero’s Land Of The Dead: Unrated FanCut by Mollo / a review by boon23

   prologue:
   I have to confess I was really suspicious, how this fanedit would turn out, or if it would at all be interesting to watch. On the one hand I was a bit disappointed by Mollo’s last fanedit, because I could not adapt to his vision (Bourne dead?), which kind of spoiled the overall entertainment for me, and on the other hand LAND OF THE DEAD was as an original an incredibly big disappointment to me, which I as a faneditor myself did not really consider salvageable. So, in a bit of spare time, I just started watching this on my PC, did not even want to burn the DVD for now, and was blown away.

   The edit:
   Awesome! I finally watched a true zombie movie and in my opinion a great one. It did not have any real social criticism or whatever people love to interpret into these kind of movies, although those scenes were there, but felt (and wonderfully felt that way) like they were mocking the more intellectual takes. This was a true horror movie, an apocalyptic end of the world scenario and it had a constant flow to it, which I really enjoyed. The evolution of the zombies, one of the major concerns I had with the original, is there, but subtle, not so superficially in your face. This continues what was started in DAY OF THE DEAD (although this movie was not used in the additional scenes from what I recall). The beginning montage worked great and I enjoyed a lot how well THE TRUMAN show and V FOR VENDETTA fit into that. The use of snippets from other movies was fantastic and added a lot to the overall atmosphere. DAWN OF THE DEAD, DAWN OF DEAD 2003, DIARY OF THE DEAD, they all had their appearance and were masterfully inserted. There were still quite soem campy scenes, but they never felt out of place and IMO opinion add to a zombie movie. And the gore: was incredibly much and really disgusting. I loved it. The ending worked great this way and even the credits montage was cool (although again incredibly long and a bit stuttering, when the original credits were scrolling). Let me say from the depth of my heart: thank you, Mollo, for this wonderful movie, you have made from this turd.

   Image quality:
   The image quality was (although a low bitrate was used) very good. Sharp and crisp picture, action scenes were still sharp. The different video sources were masterfully inserted. Some of the TV scenes look a bit artificial, because of the static frame. This was a lot of work and it shows.

   Audio quality:
   There are some minor audio gaps and the audio comes in pcm wave stereo instead of surround sound. Still: wonderful work, great adjustment of audio levels for the various sources that were used, great adding of additional or different score. Great audio for the credits!!!

   The DVD:
   The main menu and scene selection menus are all animated, although a bit monotone, as the same short scene gets repeated all the time. Still they look very good. Audio on the menus is also very well chosen. The fanedit comes with a nice deleted scene montage with beautiful intermissions. Cover art is also there. Great.
   DVD: 5 of 5

   resulting in a (and again hold your breath, because I am doing this VERY rarely)5 of 5 overall rating from me.
   A masterpiece of fanediting. Highly recommended. BUT beware: it is a zombie movie and definitely not for the faint of heart.

   I agree with Boon’s review, a great edit indeed. I couldn’t stand that “smart” leader zombie in the theatrical cut. I only noticed one minor visible video edit, the rest was great and the footage from the other films in the beginning was very well done!!

Not only does this version repair ALL the characters (Cholo (John Leguizamo) is now a badass you can emphasize with and gets a lot more screentime, Asia Argento can suddenly act, and Charlie… who used to be a dead shot idiot savant is now an awesome character who says little but leaves a lasting impression) All in all, the very fact that Mollo has managed to reedit nearly every single character into something better is an achievement unto itself.

   Then there’s the story. Gone are the ways of money. Gone are the nonsensicle EMOZOMBIES (Although I must say, their evolution is still there… and makes a lot more sense… going on a line of logical progression). Thankfully also gone is the sk8rboi… who’s headphone wearing idiocy dragged the whole movie down in the third act.

   This edit is exactly the way Romero SHOULD have released Land. It would have been a critically acclaimed winner and led to bigger budget films, not throw away Diary of the Dead stuff.

   DVD Quality:

   There’s minimal menus, but they set the tone nicely. I simply love that song, which is also used in the credits. The addition of a editing room floor compilation is good, but woefully painful to watch. It does help remind you just how bad the original movie is. My only real gripe is one that won’t bother widescreen viewers. For 4:3 people there’s a line all the way at the bottom of the frame, well below the letterbox, that appears only in some scenes. The effect deters from the edit only slightly though, and as I said… it won’t be evident to widescreen viewers.

   Verdict:

   Download the bloody movie now! It’s an absolute must see at this point.

   Hey, it’s my first comment! And a worth fan edit to boot!

   Mollo’s re-working of George Romero’s ‘Land Of The Dead’ takes a mediocre film with lots of potential and turns it into a satisfying entry in the Dead series. Stripped away are all the inane subplots, terrible dialogue and pointless exposition that sullied this film the first time around.

   The biggest error in the original was the subplot of money as a plot motivation. Exactly WHO in a post-apocalyptic world has any need for money? It completely squandered the social commentary of class struggle.

   In short – Mollo’s edit (and his wonderful new opening sequence) redeems this film and turns it into the grim and brutal story it should have been.

    I bought “Land of the Dead” on my way home the other night in anticipation of watching this edit. It’s sitting, still wrapped, on my shelf and I believe it will probably stay that way. Mollo’s version left me pretty entertained and I have the feeling the original would only lead downhill from his.

    The edit:
    Very nice work on the credits, excellent integration into the film. The swooping “Unrated Cut” was a little wacky, but worked and it looked like it was supposed to be there. I liked the sfx Mollo added there as well.

    The new opening montage was apparently built from different movie sources. Mollo did a great job with this, although the TV in the bar looked a bit like an overlay and some of the shots (like of the two security guards/soldiers and the hunters shooting the zombie) looked to be from different sources. Overall though, nicely done. It effectively gives you some important information- and in a very creative way. And I loved the ‘Day in the Life’ piano chords. Excellent choice.

    The main body of the film is pretty solid. No real startling jumps in the story, plot or the video/audio. Lots of nice intestine eating and gore a-plenty. Apparently there were several elements/characters you removed and I didn’t feel like anything was overtly missing. One thing that was noticeable to me was the zombie “intelligence factor”. I can’t be sure if this was noticeable to me because I read your description and had it on the brain- that’s the danger of knowing these problems going in. Anyway, the idea of the zombies sort of learning behavior (like with the electrified fence) made sense and then pays off at the end with the fireworks. But it did seem to me like the black zombie was sort of a leader. But by repeatedly showing him at the forefront of the zombies march to the city every time – I don’t know, it seemed like something was half-developed there. Is he supposed to be leading them? And what’s with the gun he never used? It raised some questions for me. If he were omitted up until, say, the pile driver scene, it might play better and make the Zombies just seem like a faceless terror while leaving their slow learning curve intact.

    The only other thing I noticed was what seemed to be an inserted shot of someone else’s neck being bitten instead of Dennis Hopper’s at the end.

    Overall a very strong zombie movie. A few minor things keep me from giving it a 5, but it deserves a very solid 4 with a very big compliment: I’ve no desire to watch the original.

    Say what you will about (the original) Day of the Dead’s faults, they’re nothing compared to the abomination that WAS Land of the Dead. Zombies that can learn simple commands is one thing (and, let’s face it, Bub is kind of annoying) but the zombies on display in Romero’s original cut were just downright silly. Mollo’s cut of LotD is one the best edits that I’ve watched since finding this site. Although there are some obvious insert shots (like Dennis Hopper getting bitten on the neck), the editing is so good that it all just flows in your mind and that’s what matters. His new opening is fantastic, despite some obvious overlay on the TVs. The only continuity error I noticed in the edit was the legless zombie that jumps on Dead Reckoning. In Romero’s cut, he falls into Dead Reckoning and attacks the crew, cut to that awful gag with Pillsbury throwing him out. But, unless I missed something, he still jumps on Dead Reckoning but then he just disappears. Oh well, small potatoes when you consider that 99% of this edit is a HUGE improvement over the original. While it’ll never be onpar with (the original) Night of the Living Dead or (the original) Dawn of the Dead, or even (the original) Day of the Dead, I think this cut can at least stand beside its brothers with its head held high. Now, the big question, can Mollo save Diary of the Dead (or are the few shots in your LotD cut the most that can be salvaged from that film)?

    I’m a huge movie buff though, and a big zombie/Romero fan. This is the second fan edit I’ve seen after Phantom Edit, and I have to say that this rocks man. The intro blew me away. I actually recognized just about every film spliced in, but I thought it worked brilliantly. Much better in my estimation than the original. Dumping a lot of the social commentary was also great. I love Romero, but man, why’s he gotta be so preachy all the time?

    Its been a couple years since I’ve seen this film, so there’s a bit I don’t remember so well, but I have to say, for the most part, the edit flowed pretty well seamlessly. A lot of work went into this and it shows. Thanks Mollo!

    I have to agree to a degree with what everyone else is saying. Overall, I would have to say that your work is top-notch; while I did notice the overlay of the bridge over top of the DAWN OF THE DEAD 2004 “gas bomb explosion” scene to suggest the further destruction caused by the Dead Reckoning’s missiles, the editing was unnoticeable. The opening segment is definitely the highlight of the movie and actually made me and some friends believe you may have actually pulled it off…

    Unfortunately, you didn’t. Or I should say, Romero didn’t. I don’t think ANY amount of editing could have saved this movie, short of re-shooting the entire thing with an altered or new script. There were just too many “character(s) does/ do something stupid in order for the plot to progress” moments or “sneaky and silent zombie appears out of nowhere right behind someone to bite them and cause mayhem” to take this seriously. I mean these are professional soldiers who have been specifically trained in regards to combating zombies; you mean they DON’T pair up, or wear multiple layers of clothing or some sort of body armor, or allow people to “pick their building” being that they ARE living in an abandoned city, have gates that can’t be taken down so easily, or electric fences that can be turned off at the gate, etc. How could they have such a well-organized establishment fall apart so quickly simply because no one was looking at the river bed? I mean, really? No security cameras or patrols? No grenades or flame throwers?

    I will say that this is no doubt as good as LAND OF THE DEAD will EVER get, but unfortunately as the saying goes, now matter how much you polish an undead turd, it’s still a turd. Maybe if you threw in some GOBLIN music or something GOBLINesque (which would have been fitting with Dario’s daughter being in it and all) it would have made it a bit better.

    Again, no offense to you Mollo – you did a fantastic editing job for what you had to work with. I give this a “5″ for the editing and the attempt, a “2 to 3″ for the story up from the original’s “0 to 1″ (and THANK YOU for taking out that last line: “They just wanted a home and a place to stay” Yeah, as if the EARTH wasn’t big enough..)

    Like other Romero fans, I was somewhat disappointed by the original version of Land Of The Dead. I own all the originals many times over and Romero’s version of this never felt right sitting next to the others.

    Then I saw Mollo’s FanCut, which corrects Romero’s various missteps and somehow opens the world of the film up, thus making this film so much more epic than it had previously been.

    The film is now so much more watchable and seems to be truer to Romero (or at least the things we like about Romero’s films) than Romero could achieve.

    I do miss the puppet zombie at the film’s opening (and to a lesser extent the Savini zombie), but that’s a small price to pay.

    the flow, story and changed elements (zombie reasoning, etc.) are all on fine display. as usual, mollo adds in his own special touches that really put a trademarked feel to each of his edits. technical quality is 5/5 and the edit turns an adequate zombie movie (3/5) into a much better (and less groaning!) flick (4/5).

    Much better retelling. Now fiddlers green feels like an arcology with a dictator like it should instead of the film whining about rich white guys. Cholo has a huge turn around and works as an interesting main character now. Great new opening and ending.

    Still has the same problems of unprepared characters but the timeline feels more compressed, like the rising didn’t happen so long ago and excuses some of the poorly designed defenses (and makes the city population feel much lower). Theater release should have been much closer to this version.

    I rated this movie 8 out of 10 because the source material is just not good enough to warrant better.
    For example even this corrected movie is not as good as Romeros Day of the Dead (The modern one that takes place in the shopping mall)

    Now as for the skill of the editor i found no mistakes or problems 10 out of 10 on that front.
    Also did he polish the hell out of this turd? yes he did this movie is better than the original by miles.

    So i endorse seeing this movie if you never saw the original or if you love zombie movies and hated the original.
    But if you didnt like the original and you are indifferent about zombie movies then skip it, its way better than the original but its not must see viewing.

    Excellent work, excellent cut of the movie, far superior to the original 8/10
