Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: The InfoDroid Edit

by Infodroid
What is it about? This fanedit brings ToD to a way more consistent feel with Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Superfluous or annoying dialogue was removed as well as misplaced shots and cutting scenes thoughout. The slapstick comedic aspects were considerably toned down.

Your intention for this fanedit: My intention was to bring Temple of Doom, which, prior to the release of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was the most derided of the Indy Trilogy to a level that was more consistent with the feel of Raiders.

Your way to achieve your intention: I tried to acheive it by:

  • -Replacing Kate Capshaw’s song and dance number with a much more mysterious jungle sequence taken from the middle of the film.
  • -Changing the opening credits font to match the other three films
  • -Removing superfluous or annoying dialogue, removing or rearranging misplaced shots and cutting unnecessary scenes thoughout.
  • -And finally, by toning down or eliminating the more slapstick comedic aspects of the story.

The more controversial changes for this edit include the elimination of the gross-out parts of the cartoon-like “monkey brains” dinner scene, and the complete erasure of the (in my opinion) way over the top heart-ripping Human sacrifice scene.

I just can’t thank him enough from the bottom of my heart. You’re the best, Tom!
I also want to thank both Boon23 and Throwgncpr for their generous and friendly support while I was trying to figure out how to get this thing released. The wealth of knowledge contained within this site has been extremely helpful to me as a first-time faneditor, especially the excellent DVD motion menu tutorial Boon created and the treasure trove of DVD cover resources…great, great stuff and it is very appreciated. This is quite a site you’ve got here…pioneering a new art form. Good job, Guys!

And lastly, to everyone who helped distribute this in any small way, whether it be through a torrent, a PIF chain or just word of mouth…I appreciate your contribution and hope you enjoyed my edit as much as I enjoyed making it.

  1. Overall I thought it was really good, and I liked most of the edits.

VIDEO QUALITY: Video was very nice. crisp, no issues with any of the cuts. Easy 5 out of 5

AUDIO QUALITY: Overall it was pretty good. There were a few instances where it seemed like the levels were off. Once instance the dialog was extremely quiet. This only lasted briefly. There were a couple of other times that seemed exceedingly loud. Other than that it was good. there was a minor sync issue also that started about halfway through the film, but it was not really distracting. i noticed no cuts at all, and it all flowed very nicely. 4 out of 5

EDITING / STORYTELLING: I really liked most of the cuts. The intro was pretty cool to set the tone, however it was a little strange when it flipped back to the previous day. it just seemed a bit odd and didnt quite sit right with me. Perhaps if there was a longer pause before we go back to the previous day. I think the trimming of short round was just about right. I do like his character a lot, although he can be a bit much at times. Good trims. Same goes for Willy. very good trims. IMHO, I felt like the dinner scene was trimmed a bit too much. Not necessarily because I missed these scenes, but there seems to now be a bit of a continuity issue when Indy brings Willy the plate of fruit. Why is she so ravished? we dont know why exactly. Maybe that should have been trimmed a bit more if the dinner scene was trimmed so heavily. Another thing I missed was the thugee victom getting his heart ripped out. IMO, it really adds to the evil feel of the thugees. This is just my preference though. The edit worked fine without it, I just like it in there. I dont want to stress on these things too much. Almost all of the editing choices I thought were fantastic, and this was highly enjoyable. I recommend it to fans of the series. 4 out of 5 for me

DVD PRESENTATION: I LOVE the main menu!!! really cool. nice layout and video. The chapter menus had a bit to be desired. There were just so many chapters on the 2 pages that it was hard to really tell which chapter you were choosing. Fewer with numbers or titles would have been an improvement, but still good overall DVD. 4 out of 5.

So to sum it all up, this is a 4 of 5 for me, and close to a 5! If you like Indiana Jones, grab this edit!!

  2. In my opinion this aggressive edit is precisely what “Temple of Doom” required. The cuts were well executed and if I weren’t so familiar with the original disaster I wouldn’t have missed any of it.

My one complaint comes at the end fight on the severed bridge where there is a microsecond of Indy grasping at his heart for no apparent reason. It makes very little sense with the earlier heart-ripping sequence cut.

I love the new Paramount Mountain transition. This is the edit I now consider official. Try this edit out! If you think it is too much try the less aggressive ADM cut.

  3. I for one really enjoyed it. Some really good work here.

I hate musicals – I hate em. So your removal of the start sequence works for me. I didn’t feel the flashback was jarring at all.

Getting rid of the camping out/Willie frantic scene – yep.

Dinner scene – well, it’s funny – but Willie is so annoying, although why she’s hungry later? I guess it works – I’d buy it.

Removal of first sacrifice – no problem, makes Willie’s sacrifice that more surprising.

To be honest – there was still too much Willie!

But – this is an improvement and having downloaded the Xvid to test, I now want the full DVD!

Well done mate – you won’t please everyone – but I’m happy.

  4. Even after seeing Infodroid’s rescue of “The Last Crusade”, I wondered if “Temple” could be saved. I rate the theatrical even below the awful “Mummy Returns”. To my surprise, however, Infodroid has unearthed a decent movie, and what’s better, a decent Indy movie.

Willie is now tolerable, and even somewhat likeable. Short Round is mostly inoffensive. The new opening scene, with the severed fingers, is terrific, and making the Shanghai scenes a flashback is an excellent choice. In the theatrical, the plane-to-raft-down-mountains-to-the-river sequence is insultingly stupid. But now that the rules of space and time demand that the escape work, it’s much more palatable.

From the dinner scene to the falling-ceiling bit, terrific cuts are made all around. Later, after Indy’s dark side spell, some stuff was kept in that I think should go, including Short Round’s kung fu, the mine car chase and some general pace-dampeners here and there. Another ten minutes’ worth of cuts and I think this could be a real classic.

I don’t want to undersell this edit, however. It’s far better than the theatrical, the picture and sound is on par with the original dvds, and there’s a very cool cast tribute in the closing credits. If you love “Raiders” but have zero interest in seeing “Doom” again, I unreservedly recommend giving this cut a try. The man in the hat is back!

  5. I watched this again last night and I was in awe. It was as enjoyable as when I saw it in the theater as a kid. Since then, I have “grown up” and the over the top moments seem to stand out more and more. Luckily, Infodroid has given me back the Indy I remember as a kid.
The editing was flawless. The pacing was much improved, I never got bored. Excellent menus, cover and disc art really make this the complete package.
I think the only issue I had was his cutting the “Fortune and Glory” speech Indy gave Short Round before they left for Pankot. It might have been cut to help the pacing, but it would also give a bit of meaning when Willie uses the phrase later in the movie.

This edit takes me back to when I first saw the original. I paid for the whole seat, but I only used the edge.

    Rating: 5 Slugs.

  6. i share two critiques of this edit with throw – 1> lets see a damn heart ripped out. this is (for me) almost the entire reason why this cult is portrayed as evil… it really moves the story along. and 2> the introductory scene flip flop was distracting. perhaps it would work better to disperse the willy introduction throughout their trek through the jungle? i dunno.

other than those two mentions, i REALLY enjoyed this edit. minimizing willie, short round and all the cheesiness REALLY pays out here (and much better than ADM’s more merciful edit).

i still miss some of the dinner scene. (this seems necessary to set the tone for indy showing up with fruit at willie’s door, too.) …but… i can see why both ADM and infodroid have chosen to remove it.

a really did enjoy temple of doom again and now that i’m not 9 this is a huge accomplisment! (LOL) thanks, infodroid!

  7. I just finished watching this and I was very impressed.

I liked how it cut out most of the beginning of the film, but only having a few key scenes in flashback.

The DVD presentation was excellent, although I’d agree with Ziggy about the chapter selection – there were too many to choose from on a page with a not very clear idea what scene you are selecting.

The editing is excellent. I could swear that my copy of the film (original) has less fighting in the scene where WIllie is rescued, but that’s probably censor cuts because my version is the R2 one.

Infodroid has done a good job with this edit and his Last Crusade edit, he’s got good things to come.. (How abotu an Infodroid edit of either Raiders of the Lost Ark or even turning a few Young Indiana Jones episodes into good fanedits)

  8. While I’m a big fan of Raiders and Crusade, Temple of Doom always left me cold. I actually enjoy Short Round, but Willie drove me up the wall, and the rest of the movie didn’t seem worth the bother. Infodroid has rescued this movie for me. The quality of this fanedit is top notch, and I thought just about everything was spot on. Goodbye official version, hello ID edit. On a scale of 1 to 10 Frinks, this edit gets 9 Frinks.

  9. This is the ultimate version of this movie, for sure! ID did a great job of trimming the fat. While it’s still my least favorite of the first three Indy films, I do like it, especially this version. Very well done, sir! I give it a 9/10 for overall execution.

    Review by Ripplin — October 24, 2009 @ 7:25 pm

  10. I’d like to give this edit a 10/10 but…. well it’s Temple of Doom and no matter how remarkable and outstanding this edit makes Temple it’s still… Temple of Doom

ID did a tremendous job in rearranging the first scenes: The opening scene with Indy and his comrades passing through the Jungle with no dialog adds an aura of mystery and leaves the viewer eager to uncover what happened and how Indy got there – it is similar to the opening of Raiders with the exception that this time we are told what happened. Not to mention that this gets rid of the most atrocious Indy-openings ever (yes even beating American Graffity chase across the gopher’s hill)
Granted the flasback runs pretty long for a flashback, but i did only notice that because i accidentially moved the mouse and the progress bar of the player came in sight which made me wondering: wow that’s a pretty long sequence – other than that the cuts are well placed and the indy feel keeps on going.

I didn’t even notice the removal of the “ripping-out-the-heart” scene in the beginning as nothing of the story or threat for the characters gets lost by this removal, quite the contrary: we don’t know what they plan for Indy so this uncertainty has a similar effect as knowing what terrible things will happen if they fail

of course shortround is not really an outstanding character and will always be … the jar jar binks of indiana jones but ID has done the best to reduce his campyness

the only thing that bugged me – and this is a fault of the original – was the constant red lighting, it would be nice if someone tried a color corrected version where the oversaturated red is toned down of this fabulous work

    9/10

  11. I ABSOLUTELY HATED THIS MOVIE WHEN IT CAME OUT IN THE THEATERS WHEN I WAS A CHILD !!!! I had nevered watched it again since that day in the theater – not on vhs or when I bought the entire series on DVD. I felt the same way about this movie as i felt about “the Phantom Menace” cam out in the theaters in 1999.

Before I watched this edit, I watched the original DVD first. I spent more time fast-forwarding my BD player than I did watching. I then turned to the edit version. a much more watchable and enjoyable experience.

This edit makes a valiant attempt to make a horrible, annoying, terrible movie into a watchable experience. The editor did an outstanding job making the attempt. This movie is still just BAD – this has nothing to with this edit. he does a great job and turns out a quality product.

  12. Really liked this version of Temple Of Doom.

Not many changes had to be made to improve the movie really, so not much for me to write about. I think the new opening was a great idea and I agree with the removal of a couple of the ‘gross-out’ scenes.

    Review by mullholland665 — July 11, 2010 @ 11:55 pm

  13. It took me a while to find this edit, then longer to actually write up my thoughts. That said, I watched it in one sitting, which is a pretty major accomplishment for me (and says a lot about the compelling nature of the edit). Following are some thoughts I jotted down.

I really like the Raiders-like intro; the flash-forward/flash-back didn’t bother me at all and it fits much better into the series. (One thing I’ve never understood is why TOJ was designed as a prequel and not as a sequel. There are gags set up in the first movie that don’t make sense if one were to watch them chronologically…but I guess we’re not supposed to do that?)

Didn’t notice any visual or audio problems.

Agree with most of your cuts, although I never minded seeing Dan Aykroyd’s cameo and was surprised you cut it. I definitely don’t miss Willie’s musical number. That said, I appreciated Kate Capshaw much more in this version than in the original. It’s OK to be a damsel in distress, but you don’t have to be so damn whiny about it.

TOD always struck me as far too brutal for an IJ movie and I don’t miss the sacrifice scene at all. In fact, it made the reveal of the lava whirlpool that much more dramatic when the door opens and Willie sees it–because we’re seeing it for the first time.

If I have any minor gripe at all, it’s that one brief shot of Indy clutching his chest, because there’s no setup/context for it in the edit. But that’s very minor.

    Great edit. Nicely done.

  14. All in all, nice work.
Technical quality – 8/10 – I don’t know if it’s just me, but it didn’t quite measure up to what I usually see on a FE. But it was still good enough not to detract from the viewing experience.
Editing – 10/10 – Absolutely seamless. One of the best edit jobs I’ve seen so far.
    Presentation – 10/10 – Great. No issues.
Entertainment – 8/10 – I liked the start, although the flashback seemed just a little abrupt. I loved the way you trimmed the journey to Pankot, although some things could have used a little more trimming, like Willie and her elephant. The removal of the monkey brains and the heart was perfect; I thought it was great how the drums built up to the unveiling of the stones. But from then on out, I hardly noticed any changes. I’ve seen the film three or four times, but the scenes all seemed the same to me, but maybe I just wasn’t paying close enough attention. Anyway, I think it’s a bit more entertaining than the original.
    Overall – 9/10

  15. This might be the first FanEdit I’ve rated about 5 stars since Jaws: The Sharksploitation Edit.

I usually start w/positive and go to the negatives, but here I’ll be doing the opposite since the negatives are so few.

    1. The opening credits are problem atic. You clearly had issues with the font and placement of the names. Plus you misspelled Capshaw’s name (or did I misread it? It looked like “Catshaw”).
    2. Removing the silliness and overacting is great, but Indy films ARE fun. A grimace from Willie during dinner would have helped explain her hunger later. The comment she makes when being lowered and raised in the pit so many times is necessary to add some brevity to a long, dark sequence.
    3. I can’t believe you cut Dan Aykroyd. How dare you! =]
    4. When Willy’s thrown from the elephant, cutting at Shortround’s “Very funny!” would have worked better, in part b/c of the callback during the film’s denouement.

    I honestly think that’s it.

The film is far more fun, believable, has a great deal more tension.

Your opening sequence felt far more Indiana Jones (I never liked the song and dance; well, I liked it, but I never felt it fit) although I think you could have used one of the shots in there for that Paramount logo fade they always do in Indy movies.

The other cuts along the way worked very well. I was dubious at first. If you look at my reviews of FanEdits like Flash Gordon or Quantum of Solace, you’ll see I have no patience for the editors who don’t understand the concepts of story and screenplay structure (and character arcs). You clearly get all of that.

The way you cut the Temple sequence was brilliant, making it solely about “turning” Indy and sacrificing Willy. As stated above, her line — whatever it is, I can’t recall — about how many times she’s raised and lowered should be put back in. While the sequence is shortened, a little brevity IS part of Indiana Jones…and it would go a long way there.

Cutting the Temple scene made everything afterwards that much more enjoyable. Cutting Capshaw’s overacting/screaming & some of of Ke Quan’s cutesieness (which never actually bugged me), made the funny parts funnier and I had more vested in the action and danger.

I noticed no bad cuts or edits. Yes, the sound got a little loud in 2 or 3 spots, but that’s not a major problem to me by any means.

    Very, VERY well done.

  16. P.S. I take back my comment about the logo fade–I blinked and missed it the first time. I also see now that it DOES say “Capshaw” but it’s VERY hard to read.
