Intention With This Edit: This is a single film with a major focus on Obi-Wan before his life as a hermit on Tatooine and a secondary focus of his apprentice Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side and rise as Darth Vader.

Notes
Originally based off a rough cut of EP1 and EP2 by jra166 which featured a restructed plot with no Anakin, this edit of the Episodes 1-3 features what I truly wanted to see in a prequel to Star Wars – a single film with a major focus on Obi-Wan before his life as a hermit on Tatooine and a secondary focus of his apprentice Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side and rise as Darth Vader.

Major Edits/Changes
- Added a new title crawl

- Cut and trimmed up the lightsaber duels throughout the film to reduce slow moments and increase tension/drama

- Cut and removed various redundant, excessive, childish, or otherwise “stupid” elements from the plot and characters

- Episode 1 edits:

  • 1. Entire Episode reduced to 24 minutes
  • 2. Plot now focuses on Obi-Wan arriving on Naboo with his master Qui-Gon Jinn to aid in the Naboo Rebellion against the Trade Federation
  • 3. The Queen of Naboo and Padme Amadala are now sisters (in other words, they are not the same character)
  • 4. NO YOUNG ANAKIN
  • 5. No visit to Tatooine or Pod Race
  • 6. Only ONE scene with Jar-Jar at the beginning, after which he is no longer a part of the story
  • 7. While the Naboo Rebellion is taking place, the Queen has traveled to the Galactic Senate to remove the Trade Federation from her planet (being aided by Senator Palpatine)

- Episode 2 edits:

  • 1. Entire Episode is reduced to 20 minutes
  • 2. The Episode is now divided between 2 subplots: one main story focusing on Obi-Wan investigating Amadala’s assassin and discovering the Clone army, Jango Fett, and Duku’s Rebellion, while the other lesser plot focuses on Anakin, the beginnings of his relationship with Padme, and the death of his mother
  • 3. Obi-Wan has no connection to Anakin Skywalker, nor is he Anakin’s master until the beginning of Episode 3
  • 4. Anakin arrives on Tatooine only find his mother already dead and buried (no Sand People subplot)
  • 5. Owen is Anakin’s younger brother (none of this “step-brother” BS)
  • 6. Boba Fett is NOT a clone of his father, Jango Fett
  • 7. Jango Fett’s helmet now has a voice modulator

- Episode 3 edits:

  • 1. Entire Episode reduced to 96 minutes
  • 2. The subplots of “Jedis not being able to marry” and “Anakin keeping his marriage to Padme is a secret” are cut from the story – it is now known (and acceptable) that Padme is Anakin’s wife and that Anakin is her child’s father
  • 3. The “Jedi spying on Palpatine” subplot has been removed
  • 4. Added the deleted “Plot to Destroy the Jedi?” scene back into the film (which replaces a similar scene that occured between Mace and other Jedis)
  • 5. Trimmed the “Opera House” scenes to only be about Palpatine telling his story of Darth Plagious to Anakin
  • 6. Added the deleted “A Stirring in the Senate” scene back into the film
  • 7. Cut and re-edited the “Mace VS Palpatine” duel (along with the following “Anakin’s choice” scenes) to remove redundant elements and increase the drama of the sequence
  • 8. Re-edited Anakin’s encounter with the younglings into the rest of the “Order 66″ scenes
  • 9. Added additional children screams to the audio during the hologram playback of the Anakin attacking the Jedis
  • 10. Completely removed the “Yoda VS Sidious” duel from the film – the final battle is now a single duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin
  • 11. Cut and re-edited the “Birth of the Twins/Darth Vader” sequence to remove overtly ’stupid’ plotpoints

  1. This sounds like an interesting edit. Will you be making it available as a DVD?

  2. Nice idea. This edit feels quite schizophrenic, with no real transition between some scenes, or explanation of what is actually supposed ot be going on, especially in the Phantom Menace part. If I hadn’t already seen the Phantom Menace, I would have no idea what was happening.

Also, the dialogue is very quiet compared to the sound effects and score.

  3. This edit has a very awkward feel. The pacing and narrative are very unsettled. There are also some very strange wipes and abrupt cuts. There are some audio level issues. Still a good effort.

  4. Well done, hell of a way to fit the whole trilogy to 2h 30min. Sure there are issues but they’re not enough to complain about. Highly recommended!

  5. Good in concept but ultimately it fails. Instead of a cohesive story it’s more a mishmash of action sequences. While I commend the editor for trying I don’t think it’s possible, even with the amount of cutting that can be done in all three films, to get a single two and a half hour film out of the three. Too much story is lost creating a confusing and incomprehensible film.

  7. I was pretty skeptical about this one so I waited a long time before grabbing it.
I have to admit I like it. Many people complained that Ep I went too fast. May I remind these people that Ep. I really sucked in its original form.
I loved JasonN’s handling of it in 24 minutes, LOVED it I tell you.
I didn’t love the sudden jump to Ep. II right after Qui Gon dies. Obi Wan grew a lot of hair really fast. =)
Liked the wiping of the end of Ep. II. It always came off as one of Lucas’s “Look what I can do” moments – visuals instead of coherent story. The jump from the end of II to the beginning of III wasn’t so bad.
I did feel the need to adjust the volume from time to time because music and sound effects seemed louder than speech, but it really wasn’t that bothersome to me. For the most part I thought the A/V stuff was OK – probably a 6 or so in my uneducated opinion.
Entertainment was in the 8 or 9 range. The “Exsqueeze me” line was still in there – ICK!
In the end I gave it a solid 7. I’m sad that JasonN abandoned the unification idea in favor of doing the prequels individually. A few tweaks here and there and this could have been the best of all prequel edits. I really think, after seeing this, that it is possible to put it all together in one movie and keep it to 3 hours or less.
