Fight Club – The “I am Jack’s laryngitis” Edit

a TRUE FANEDIT by Zach Action

By removing Edward Norton’s voiceover, FIGHT CLUB gets to be a much more intorspective and artsy film.

TAGLINE: I am Jack’s complete lack of narration.

Original film name Fight Club
Film studio name 20th Century Fox
Film release date 1999
Original runtime 139 minutes
Fanedit release date August 2008
New runtime 139 minutes
Amount of time cut/added 2 minutes added

INTENTION:

Shortly after seeing Fight Club in the theater, a friend commented “Imagine how awesome it would be without any of the voiceover.” He was right.

EDITING DETAILS:

Edward Norton’s voiceover has been completely removed, making this a much more introspective and “arty” film. I believe it puts you even MORE inside the head of the main character. It’s kind of hard to explain, really. You’ll have to check it out.
The narration is completely in the center channel of the 5.1 mix, so I simply faded out any instance of it. I had to use the soundtrack to fill in a few musical holes, had to do a bit of foley work (new audio for the Ron Popeil infomercial on TV, whistling as Jack is leaving his job with the shopping cart), and had to trim a second or two off a couple of shots (very minimal and unintrusive).

  1. This is the first Fan Edit I ever seen on this website (third ever). Fight Club is one of my favorite movies, it caught on at first but after repeated viewings it settled into my all time favorites list. No other movie i’ve seen before and after was as witty, clever, and awesomely shot. Every single scene is perfect and put to good use, it never gets boring. Best thing? It’s a completely different movie after watching it the second time once the twist is revealed. Hardly any movie does that.

Once I heard of tthe purpose of this edit, I had to get it. I’d love to see this movie with yet another interpretation, yet this time without Narrator’s narration. I have to say the author of this edit is correct: it DOES make it really introspective and artsy. Without him narrating, it puts the movie in a different void. You’re left filling in the blanks rather than have Narrator tell you everything. It was unsettling at first, but I got used to it and began to like it. A few places are weird cause they don’t have sound effects when they should, which are places i’m sure is out of the author’s control.

Also some scenes don’t do it for me like when Narrator is explaining A x B x C = X to a flight passenger, which sounds out of place without hearing the whole narration that accompanied the previous scene. Also when Tyler Durden’s past as a projectionist and waiter is being revealed, the narrated lines “Let me tell you something about Tyler Durden” helped introduce those scenes to the audience. In this edit, its a little weird to have Narrator just “narrate” out of the blue in the background after 30 minutes of silence. It would’ve been better, as much as those scenes kicked ass in the original, if they were omitted in this edit.

Overall, I obviously prefer the original cause I do miss that awesome narration. It carried the movie and helped get you immersed in the situations that are Fight Club and Project Mayhem. But this is a must see if you’re curious to see what would happen if “Jack” really did get Laryngitis. Leaving you to figure out some stuff on your own.

    Video: 4.5/5
    Sound: 5/5
    Edit: 4/5

  2. From the author: I whole-heartedly agree that the AxBxC=X part sounds really out of place without the previous narration (I definitely tried to think of a fix, but came up empty and just moved on), and I think you’re right about perhaps taking out the “Let me tell you…” scenes completely. I didn’t really want to structurally change the movie THAT much, but it probably would be better cutting those out, as ass-kickical as they are.

But anyway, thanks for downloading it and “getting” it and leaving your comment. I appreciate it.

  3. absolutely fantastic! it’s a thinking man’s fight club! such a different movie and in my opinion, in many ways much better than the theatrical release. as already pointed out, there are some weird spots that don’t work perfectly. doing some more editing would pull it all together… the abc=x segment, could have simply been cut. also, there are a few parts like “let me tell you about tyler durden”, that probably need to deleted or moved. personally i’m for cutting it, to keep more mystery about tyler.

    so i give it:
    5/5 for creativity and concept
    3/5 for execution

thanks for sharing and i hope to see a second version of jack’s laryngitis!

  4. Thanks for this but I must say I felt that the missing narration was just too weird. I quess I’ve seen the original too many times. I understand why it was removed but for me the movie is more fun with narration. But its nice to have alternatives, everyone should see this at least once.
