Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Unholy Edition

by Infodroid
What is it about? What was initially planned as a pretty gentle edit turned out to be as drastic as Infodroid’s Temple of Doom edit. Though it still seems slightly lighter in tone when compared to Raiders,  this fanedit turns the 3rd Indy adventure into a fun, dignified, slightly more serious and much more worthy sequel to Raiders.

*) Added Lucasfilm Logo.

1) With apologies to River Phoenix and thanks to gaith1 for the courage of his suggestion, the entire Young Indy opening sequence was removed. Too much like a slaphappy Looney Tunes episode. Everything was too “on-the-nose” with the explanation of how he got the whip, how he got the hat, how he got the fear of snakes…the whole tone of that sequence was off. And the supporting actors were horrible. It’s so off in fact, it makes me wonder if Lucas directed that portion himself. It was Lucas’ way of getting a commercial in there for the TV series he had planned, and the few redeeming qualities of the sequence weren’t enough to justify saving it. Anyway, the film is given new
life by being freed from this goofy and awkward beginning.

2) Instead, we start the film with the Paramount logo fading to a ship on the stormy high seas, which leads right into Indy getting punched in the face on the Coronado. I inserted shots from a different film to accomplish this, and I’m sure you’ll all guess which one. (See Pics…)

3) New credits, obviously.

4) Removed white-suited villain’s line “This is the second time I’ve had to reclaim my property from you,” to avoid confusion.

5) Back at the college, removed Marcus Brody’s line “…my treat…”

6) When they get to Venice, removed Indy’s line “and my mother’s ears, but the rest belongs to you.” and then Elsa’s response…”Looks like the best parts have already been spoken for.”

7) Removed librarian comedy schtick in library. Now Indy simply grabs the brass rope stand and cracks open the floor.

8) Removed Indy’s line in the tomb about the water being petroleum before promptly lighting a torch. Thanks to ShiftyEyes for the suggestion.

9) Removed Indy’s line in the tomb about his father never making it past the rats. “He hates ‘em.” Too much symmetry. (Thanks Type12point.) We get the idea later when Connery asks, “Rats?” No need to beat us over the head with it.

10) During the end of the boat chase, Kazim shouts “My soul is prepared!” but doesn’t ask Indy “How’s yours?”

11) In Venice, Indy and Elsa kiss and drop below frame. They don’t come back up to say “Ah, Venice.”

12) Removed Indy and Elsa’s conversation in the car outside the castle.

13) By popular demand, I removed Indy’s Scottish-accent tapestry artist scene. Now we see an exterior of the castle followed by Indy and Elsa sneaking up to the Nazi control center.

14) When Vogel takes Elsa hostage, there was a little too much back-and-forth for me. Now, he simply says, “That’s far enough. Put down ze gun or ze fraulein dies.” Cut some of Connery’s lines like “Don’t worry he won’t.” Indy has much less time to make a decision now. “Enough! She dies!”

15) After Elsa says “I’m sorry.” Removed Indy’s line “Don’t be.”

16) Once captured and in front of Donovan, removed Connery’s diatribe about how he knew Walter would “shell his mother…blah, blah, blah…to the shlime of Humanity.”

17) Removed Connery’s line about Marcus not being “up to the challenge”.

18) Reordered the Marcus train station “punchline” scene: Marcus meets Sallah at the train station but we cut it at “Don’t panic. Everything’s under control.” Then cut back to Indy and Dad tied up in the chair. We get the Austrian and German goodbyes. Then, when Indy tells his dad “Are you kidding? Marcus got lost in his own museum once.” we cut back to Marcus and Sallah meeting the Nazi director of antiquities guy. Cut the stupid bow the guy gives Marcus. They ask for Sallah’s papers. Sallah looks at them and says “Papers?”and we cut back to Indy and Dad tied up, “Can you try and reach my left jacket pocket?”

19) Reordered a few shots in the fireplace scene to fix some awkward editing and poor music-editing in the original and to eliminate the “Dad! What? DAD! What??? DAD!!! WHAT???” comedy routine.

20) The fireplace flips only once now before the Nazis notice them. Thanks to Type12point for suggesting it.

21) Removed the gag with Indy tumbling down the stairs after “a solution presents itself”. Now he simply says “Come on, Dad!”, Nazis pursue and the next time we see them, they’re riding out of the crate on the motorbike.

22) After the motorcycle chase, I re-edited the scene with them arguing about whether or not to go to Berlin. Cut Connery’s speech about “the armiesh of darknesh” marching all over “the facesh of the Earth”. I like this scene
so much more now. It’s far less preachy and they’re going to Berlin to get the diary back for the wealth of info it contains…not just the three simple-to-remember booby trap clues. Thanks to gaith1 for the suggestion.

23) Removed the “No ticket!” scene. It’s cute…but, no.

24) Reworked the dogfight sequence. Now, there’s no dogfight at all. ME109’s swoop in and shoot them down, then one pursues them on the ground with strafing fire. (Thanks, gaith1 and Kolpitz!)

25) Removed the ME109 flying into the tunnel. What pilot would be that stupid? Plus, the special effects are extremely dated and the plane passing them in the next lane is just ridiculous. In my version, the plane chases them down the road, pulls up, then turns around and drops the bomb.

26) Removed the King of Hatay’s lines about “Tanks”…”You’re welcome.”

27) Removed Conney’s lines in the back of Sallah’s car. “Now they have the map.” (We already know that.) “And in this short of racesh, there’sh no shilver medal for finishing shecond.”

28) Removed Donovan’s line “Care to wet your whistle, Marcus?” and Brody’s response, “I’d rather spit it in your face. But seeing as I haven’t got any spit…”

29) Removed Connery and Brody’s thing, whatever it was, about “That genius of the restoration, aid our own recussitation”, nonsense. Now it appears the Nazis captured Connery and brought him into the tank.

30) Cut one of Vogel’s slaps, “What are you hiding?”…so that on the third (instead of the fourth) slap, Connery responds.

31) Cut Indy and Sallah’s argument about “No camels…” What was all that about anyway? It brought all the momentum that had been building in the scene to a complete standstill.

32) I wanted desperately to cut Connery squirting the pen in the Nazi’s face. But there was no way to do it and still keep the continuity. The guy had ink all over his face later on, and what he did impacted the rest of the scene, and there was just no way. So, that’s my one caveat with this edit. But, at least we could lose Marcus’ cringeworthy line “the pen is mightier than the sword,” which was the real offender of this film and probably my main inspiration for making this edit.

34) Removed Vogel stomping on Indy’s fingers while he’s holding on to the tank. Now, he just goes right for the shovel. Much more vicious.

35) Removed Connery’s and Brody’s lines about “It’s a war!” and “Didn’t I tell you this was a rescue?” This was the equivalent of C-3PO and R2-D2 in the Attack of the Clones end battle.

36) Removed Connery asking “Where’s Marcus?” on the top of the tank when he just watched him fall off.

37) Removed Indy and Connery yelling “Dad!, Junior!, DAD!, JUNIOR!”

38) Removed Indy shouting “Sallah! Get Dad!” And then Sallah’s line “Father of Indy! Give me your hand!”

39) Removed Vogel’s ridiculous close-up “Dr. Strangelove” death scene shot (by request of GAD).

40) Removed Connery’s exposition about how he “never told him anything. Five minutes would’ve been enough.” I feel Connery’s face, being the actor he is, says all of this in subtext without him having to vocalize it. He also says to Indy later “I thought I’d lost you, Boy…” So I think that says it all.

41) Removed Sallah’s and Brody’s reaction shots to Indy and Dad’s hug. This was their moment, brief as it was, and doesn’t need to have shots of Marcus making goofy faces crowbarred into it.

42) At Petra, Marcus still has a gun pointed in his face, but he doesn’t do all the nodding comedy schtick.

43) Removed a couple of Connery’s “Penitent, penitent…” lines. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty. You won’t even notice.

44) Removed Connery’s joke, “but in Latin, Jehovah begins with an I”. Indy tells us the same thing two seconds later.

45) In the final scene, I removed possibly the worst line of the entire movie…”Indy! Henry! Follow me! I know the way! AaaahhhHHHH!” Poor Marcus. I also had to take out a couple of brief shots of Indy’s horse catching up with Marcus’ and replace them with title cards.

46) Added a tribute to the cast in the end credits. (for full list)

Your way to achieve your intention: By either eliminating or toning down as much of the unfunny, slapstick humor as possible…  Removing the cartoonish Young Indy story that opens the film and replacing it with a new opening credit sequence…  Removing dated special effects shots…  Re-editing the placement of certain scenes…  Removing superfluous, annoying or redundant dialogue…  And comparing each scene with Raiders to try to get a more consistent feel.

  1. When I was a kid, I thought “Crusade” was an awesome movie, and the best of the Indys. It had all the action of “Raiders”, and was a good deal funnier.

This is what Spielberg was aiming for: after getting a well-deserved scolding for the violence and oppressive tone of “Temple of Doom”, “Crusade” was a mea culpa of sorts. His first priority was to make a kid-friendly film, not to make a tonal match to “Raiders”.

But that IS Infodroid’s intention. Watching this edit made me feel like a kid again, because this ‘unholy’ “Crusade” is considerably more awesome than the theatrical version. Like the Phantom Editior, who rightfully excised the unnecessary but popular asteroid chase from “Attack of the Phantom”, Infodroid proves his gutsiness by leaving out the too-cute ‘young Indy’ sequence. The rest of the cuts are subtler, but they do their job well.

On the tech side, everything looks great and the menus are fantastic. Look for a very cool homage to the cast part-way through the credits!

Those with small kids will probably want to show them the theatrical cut… but for those who love “Raiders” a good deal more than the other movies, this cut will almost definitely become your go-to version.

  2. InfoDroid is my own personal savior. His cut of Last Crusade ROCKS! Everyone can agree that Raiders of the Lost Ark is a perfect film but there are few definite opinions when it comes to the sequels. Most hate Temple of Doom (whereas I love it) and think that Last Crusade is a “return to form.” I, however, have always found the third entry to be overly silly and an insult to Marcus Brody. Thankfully, ID has saved us all that embarassment with this marvelous, and now definitive, cut. Seriously, can we petition Spielberg and Lucas to release this version on Blu-ray? No matter what you think of Last Crusade, you owe it to yourself as an Indy fan to check out this cut. ID has made the bold choice to cut the Young Indy stuff, and it’s hardly missed. It was just a shortened pilot for the awful TV series anyway. But, as mentioned before, ID’s most important contribution to the world of Indiana Jones is his treatment of Marcus Brody. Why Spielberg and Lucas felt it necessary to push Brody to the ground and kick him continuously is beyond me but ID has extended his hand and lifted him up, giving him back (most of) his dignity. I still wish the line about him getting lost in his own museum were gone but beggers can’t be choosers. If this cut is any indication of ID’s power, I wholeheartedly await his inevitible Crystal Skull edit because while Last Crusade is flawed, Crystal Skull is downright insultingly bad. If anyone can give Indy back his dignity, it’s Infodroid. In fact, despite my love for all things Temple of Doom, I think I might even check out his cut of that film out of respect for this gift he has given us. Thank you, InfoDroid … and thanks for the shout-out on the DVD menu.

  3. Sorry guys. Some things need not be messed with. This film was a classic on its own. I gave it a chance because of general support for fan-editing, but I’ll stick with the original DVD.

  4. This is a very bold edit, due mostly to ID leaving out the opening Young Indy sequence. This decision works well for those of us who didn’t particularly care for it to begin with, and takes you right into the movie very quickly (Perhaps a little too quickly for some, but not much could be done about that.) His use of footage from the Perfect Storm is inspired and blends in very nicely with the Last Crusade footage. Nice job integrating the new credits, very slick.

All the little cuts he has made throughout are well done and serve their purpose. The only real holes are 1) at the castle. How did they get in if it is a secret Nazi stronghold? Of course, given Spielberg’s original solution, this certainly can be forgiven. :) and 2) is during the attack on the German convoy. How and why did Marcus and Henry get into the tank?

There still one or two lines that could go (IMO), but other than a few minor qualms, this is a very fine edit. No audio / video issues, great presentation.

I’d say ID has achieved his intention with this fan-edit.

I give it a 4 of 5. Great work. ID is a fan-editor to watch out for, for sure.

  5. Let me add: I especially liked the excising of the “No Ticket” bit (funny, but unnecessary) and the plane in the tunnel (not funny and unnecessary). It took some nads to cut out such memorable (for better or worse) pieces. Kudos.

  6. A very nice fanedit. It is improved to the original and makes for a fun adventure, much more in the style of the first one. I found the fight with the tank and the horse still too long and when I watched it I thought “Hmmm, I wonder what people were complaining about for Indy 4, this is just the same.” The fanedit as movie is still not a classic to me, but it was a nice entertainment watching it. Thank you, Infodroid. Very well put off. Great end credits.

  7. Loved your ‘Temple’ edit. I wasn’t so offended by ‘Crusade’, but reading through your removals here, plus the changes at the start are inspiring. Plus hilarious, every time you take the piss out of Connery’s lines – I’m laughing. So you’re right, they probably should go and the more I think about it – most of your choices are good ones….so Infodroid – I’m going to download and check it out.

I’m desperately hoping that you can fix CRYSTAL in the same way, because my god, it’s not full of stars. It was cringeworthy bad, but I see on the forum you’re working on it – I hope you get well soon however. Will report back on this one my friend!

  8. I love the new beginning but I hate the missing “no ticket” line, that was my favourite part of the movie. I quess the theatrical cut is my preferred version.

  9. great execution. the opening scene works even though it feels a bit rushed (because of the lack of young indiana) but otherwise works great. the new title sequence works well and is pretty fun (as well as the end credits, good job).

most of the edits were of superfluous, silly or unfunny bits – however, i think that a few should be left for continuity. (in addition to removing some bits that seemed to be “missed” in cutting.

i missed a few scenes and their removal was distracting… like: “my soul is prepared, is yours”, the dogfight scene, no ticket, and his dad’s speech at the cliff, when it comes down to it, i think the last crusade HAS to be >slightly< slapstick for it to work, however, clearly a lot of folks have found in this edit to improve on the original, but it is just too drastic for me. perhaps it is just nostalgia… ?

other than that, the continuity issues (how did indy get in the castle? what happened to the planes tail? where is the second plane? why are henry and marcus in the tank? etc.) ARE distracting.

edits that i REALLY liked were how the fireplace scene is reworked, elsa’s character is minimized and the more annoying bits from henry/sean connery are eliminated. however, i think this could easily be improved.

  10. Excellent stuff. The Last Crusade is my favourite of all the Indiana Jones films and while because I can tell where soemthing has been cut, I still think Infodroid did a very good job with his edit. I’m glad my favourite scene with the excellent father/son moment towards the end where Sean Connery convinces Harrison Ford to let the grail go is still in it.

  11. Though I think this edit is very well done, I do miss a lot of the comedy. I think the film was better for it. But your goal was to make it more in the style of Raiders, and in that you definitely succeeded. Though the theatrical version is still my favorite, I do enjoy this a lot.

  12. I just would have kept Sean funny lines during the planes chase. They always make me laugh I must confess… Other than that you pretty much saved this movie for me. There was so much one liners and lazy ideas to get our heroes out of trouble (like when Sean sits on a chair and a secret passage magicaly opens…) that I almost fall asleep each time I watch this movie now. GREAT edit!

  13. I thorougly enjoyed this edit. The execution was pretty much flawless and the overall story was really fun. Definitely one I’d recommend to others. :)

    Review by flyboy707 — December 14, 2009 @ 8:53 pm

  15. In addition to recently having watched the theatrical cut, I also went to see this film in the theaters during its original release date (approx. 20 years ago). I didn’t mind as much when I was TEN, but some of the goofier elements rubbed me the wrong way – when I revisited this film a couple months ago. As such, I was excited to find and view this reedit.

I understand why the the whole train sequence was done away with. Still . . . I can’t help but wonder if some of the ‘on-the-nose’ elements could’ve been trimmed, w/out omitting the entire sequence all together. The final few minutes of that sequence, do well in setting the tone for Indy’s estranged relationship w/ his father. I also enjoy the idea, that his famous fedora was procured during that youthful misadventure.

Ironically, since that sequence WAS cut, I think you could still have left the line in referencing it ["this is the second time . . . Dr. Jones"]. ‘Ironic’, b/c there are A LOT of cuts which make no sense to me. There are some good cuts. But I think the re-editor got to trigger happy w/ their splicing of scenes.

Also the opening credits are a poor choice (IMO). We’re trying to watch this action sequence . . . which is already poorly lit . . . in the middle of a storm . . . whilest in the middle of a dark sea. It’s difficult enough to follow the action — w/out having to look past all the fucking credits. Poor choice.

From there many of the action sequences get trimmed w/ little to no regard for **Pacing**. Indy and his Dad are tied up in the fireplace. Then 20-30 seconds later they’re riding away on a motorcycle (and sidecar). Important ‘exhibition scenes’ were cast aside. This edit relies too much on the viewer having already watched this film several times, I think. Even then, the action is too compressed. With too little regard for **Pacing**.

Once Indy and Dad escape from the blimp, two Nazi war-birds appear. The ensuing dogfight is trimmed too much. One of the war-birds vanishes. We see Indy’s plane get shot at, but then are left to ASSUME they were hit, when we quickly see that they need to crash-land.

At one point we see that Indy is out of bullets, then he has bullets again?!?!? Indy’s father seems to magically appear in the Nazi tank. Presumably . . . b/c he had been captured . . . somehow. These scenes (and others) lack coherence. Often times I felt as if I had been watching w/ the fast-forward button engaged. Some of the trims make sense to me. Yet, the majority of them I found ‘baffling’.

I still applaud the re-editor’s efforts, however. Last Crusade is a film which could use some judicious editing. And *some* of these edits were welcomed ones.

  16. I can’t wait to see this. I always hated how Sallah and Brody were turned into comic relief when they were pretty kick-ass characters in the first movie.
