member ratings:
Original film name: Hancock
New film name: Hancock: Tonight, He Comes
Released on FE: July 2009
Original runtime: 102 mins
New runtime: 76 mins
Amount of time Cut/Added: 26 mins removed
The intention of this fanedit:
To present a much darker version of Hancock by eliminating a lot the silly humour and over-the-top action sequences. Also, to remove Mary’s superpowers from the story. It’s now a much more sombre story of a superhero dealing with his inner demons that mirrors the classic story of a god falling in love with a mortal and the consequences involved.
Cuts removed:
- -the opening chase sequence
- -the standoff with the neighbourhood bully
- -the youtube clips
- -all scenes/lines of dialogue that dealt with Mary’s superpowers
- -all references to Hancock being ageless
- -the epilogue
- -new ending created
Additional Comment:
I thought this was a decent movie right up to the point where the audience finds out that Mary is a superhero as well. They lost me with that, so I removed it. Now Mary is just a mortal human. There is also a much darker story here, and by eliminating a lot of the silly jokes and Michael Bay-esque CGI-laden action sequences, I hope I’ve brought it out.
This is my first attempt at “turd-polishing”. My other edits were just different takes on movies that I already considered to be quite good. I don’t think this is a great movie now, but I think it’s much better than it was.
The title of my edit refers to the original screenplay which was supposedly a much darker story. And yes, I’m well aware of the fact that it now sounds like the title for a really bad porn flick.
Time needed for the edition: about two weeks

I’ve just finished watching this with my wife, who had never seen the theatrical release. I thought it was a definite improvement on the theatrical release and I would have given it more than 6/10 if it hadn’t been for the awkward dialog between Hancock and Mary in the scenes following the fridge incident. Apart from that, I thought it was very well edited and I loved how it ended. Having never seen the theatrical and with no input from myself, my wife was confused about the fridge being outside and by Mary suddenly dressing in an all black outfit with the eye make-up and the dialog between her and Hancock. Aside from that however, she enjoyed the edit and we both really liked the end credit sequence. We both agreed, after I explained a couple of things, that all the things that were taken out, were not missed. If I was going to watch ‘Hancock’ again, it will be this fan edit.

I agree to Metrostar. The sudden change in the relationship between Hancock and Mary was way too abrupt and really took me out of what was so far a much better movie.

I watched this and enjoyed it. This is one of the most well-intentioned FanEdits to come out in a loooong time IMHO. I have read the script for “Tonight, He Comes.” This is probably about as valiant an effort as we are likely to see in getting what came out in theatres in line with the original script. I enjoyed the truncation of the dinner scene where Hancock tells his amnesia origin.I very much enjoy the way the scene between Hancock and Mary alone in the kitchen plays out now. Very effective. Unfortunately for the FanEditor, the material AFTER this scene provided by Peter Berg’s original is virtually incoherent, disorganized, and so far a departure from the original script that it cannot be saved. I applaud the effort–it is realized with technique that makes it fairly seamless–but the material with which one has to work (that being Peter Berg’s original cut of the film) simply doesn’t have “enough” to be edited into a leaner, better film. Considering the materials you had to work with, this is a much better film. Cheers!

i enjoyed the first half of hancock in theaters. adabisi’s cut is a welcome change! still severely limited to the bipolar pic that was hancock, this is a great re-imagining.

It did simply not convince me. Started so well and then got so much worse, even than the original.
