I think this one deserves a higher rating than it's current average, Mollo is showing off his sense of style here and it is quite an improvement. Some excellent editing for sure. I think I gave this an 8, but I'm not certain, as it was some time ago. Recommended watching!

That said, Mollo's edit is certainly more entertaining than the original. Unfortunately, the original is faulted (IMO) beyond any attempt to make it very good at all. It's sad, really, because the premise of the film is quite cool and Mollo's thought behind the edit (making it more like a Leone film) is an excellent one. And in the hands of someone more capable, like Leone, it could have been a really kick ass movie. Imagine Clint Eastwood and Mifune with Leone directing! And if any old Western could benefit from a remake ala '3:10 to Yuma', it is this one.

Mollo has improved it a bit with new sfx and some new score. His stated intention was to give it "a bit" of the Leone feel, and he has done so. But it's really not enough to save the picture.

Mollo is a very good (and award winning, lest we forget!) editor. But even with competent fan editing certain films might never rise above a certain level. For me, this is the case here.

re: http://fanedit.org/712/

There is something odd with the picture framing: when watching the comparison clips, the Leoneized image is 2.35:1. When the movie plays, it is 16:9 and is stretched vertically. I went to the above image (with the sword under Bronson's neck at 23:37 on the dvd timeframe) and compared the comparison scene's image above and the movie scene's image and the movie is vertically stretched (not by much, but look at the japanese man on the right and when you pause the dvd, open this page and compare both images). Is there any way to release a version 2 that properly sets the image (to 1.85:1 or 2.35;1)?

I've also noted that the dvd image is a little brighter and maybe washed out as a result, again in comparison to the images above.

I bought the original DVD some time ago,but sadly it just ended as a faded memory in my ever growing pile of unwatched DVD`s.I remember the movie from a rental VHS-tape in my kid years, and I was left with an impression of having seen a western with really silly music score borderline making the movie feel like a comedic western. After hearing about this new fan edit with a more befitting western music score I felt the urge to see the movie again.

I must say that Im quite impressed with what Mollo did with this movie, the new music actually made it a more serious movie. And the new action sounds packs a serious punch.Whenever I feel like seeing this movie again I will forever watch this fan edit,my original DVD will never be used.Kudos!

From the clip on Youtube, this looks to be quite an excellent edit. I think if there was one complaint is that if this were to truly be a Leone-ized cut, it would have a LOT more Morricone-esque music and definitely have more action oriented music. It sounds as if most of the movie is music free. Regardless, I will post a further comment after downloading.

Comment by Amok - Oct 23 2008

I watched it and while I agree that this movie can not be made "great", Mollo did an excellent job at giving it a little update. I loved all his changes and would have welcomed more editing. Bronson's jokes where appropriate at the beginning of the movie, but I would have expected his character to become a little more serious towards the end of the movie.

The general idea is excellent however, and there are a LOT of (potentially) great spaghetti westerns that could benefit with a little Mollo treatment.

Thanks Slash, I checked those timings and have found no errors. The raw video files work perfectly so it could be the burn process.

These are the ones I noticed 38:22, 56:56 and 1:38:17. Also, I am assuming this is 1.85:1. While the scene comparison lookes framed properly, the actual film doesn't look quite 1.85:1, maybe more like 1.78:1?

If anyone else notices any glitches please report it, as it seems my NTSC conversion plays correctly. As for 'one near the end looks like a very bad edit.' maybe Slash, you could give a time as to when this occurs to see if this is indeed a problem with the NTSC DVD? Thank You

Well, there are several glitches in the film, I'm guessing from the PAL conversion? Plus one near the end that looks like a very bad edit.

Blofeld wrote August 22 2008

It's amazing how by changing the music in the early scenes makes it all seem more tense. Nice job.

The repeating shot of the hooker is a bonus feature!

The film was tested, as was the AVI version, so there should be no errors....? The original comparison short is included in the DVD.

Nice work, but noticed a few video errors during playback. Also the scene in the brothel, the shot of Kuroda's girl disrobing repeats itself. Other than that, good work. Would have liked to have the trailer and original scenes included on the DVD also.

I really like the idea behind this concept and the example you posted on YouTube are compelling enough to show this will work not just for "Red Sun" but perhaps enough to invigorate many other Westerns. I look forward to viewing your work in its entirety.

Do you think you could give the same "Leone-ised" treatment to "Two Mules for Sister Sara"? It already stars Clint Eastwood and is scored by Ennio Morricone so it's already 2/3's of the way there.
