Loved it! Thanks, Voodl!
There are a couple of minor rough scene transitions (one pretty abrupt one right near the end, in particular), and a couple of very minor soundtrack issues (music fading out, but then also swelling as if the scene will continue, but then a cut occurs). However, these minor technical glitches aside, I thought this edit was great! Some people might complain that the whole point of the original theatrical release was the political and social commentary that Voodl actually removed, but I would argue that, although the plot doesn’t follow Heinlein’s original book, Voodl’s edit captures the spirit of some of my favorite parts of the original source material.
I first read the book almost 25 years ago, and then read it a few more times over the next few years.
I tolerated the movie version, just accepting it as a movie about something else that happened to share the same title as the novel. But now I feel like I have something much better than the theatrical version. There are some character interactions that are a little ambiguous now, and characters sometimes refer directly or indirectly to earlier interactions that no longer exist in Voodl’s edit (but we as viewers, can be willing to accept that some interactions can take place “out of frame,” and an interaction that took place before the chronological start of the movie doesn’t HAVE to be shown in a flashback).
And to the critics who miss the social commentary, you still have the original. I think there’s a reason it’s found in the bargain bins everywhere. I loved reading the reviews of this movie in the years after its release, as people praised all the “subtle” “anti-war” “subversive” “intelligent” “brilliant” aspects of it. I especially enjoy modern day liberal “thinkers” who will look for any excuse to tie anything whatsoever to the war in Iraq, and will even point to this movie as being somehow relevant. Utter garbage, all of it. The movie had some valid commentary, but it was completely mixed; I think the feeling that any given person has about any position the movie takes on society/war/government/military/whatever really just reflects his/her own opinion–not the opinion of the writer or director or anyone else associated with the movie.
Thankfully, that’s all gone now. Voodl, loved the edit! This might be, considering the available source material, the closest thing that you could get to the type of movie you were shooting for, and that I would have enjoyed much more than the “real” one. Thank you very much for your hard work on this!

This is a fantastic edit. Had I not seen the original I would never had known there were any romantic entanglements between the characters. This version is infinitely better than the theatrical release.

RAW is right. watch starship troopers as heinlein wished it were imagined for the screen in the first place. here we have a fun action adventure with all the usual sci-fi craziness that you would expect from hunting down large disgusting BUGS without all the silly love interest and cheese. a tightly paced war movie! awesome.
entertainment 5/5

5/5!

If it was technically better done, this would have been great. Still, this one is a good version of Starship Troopers.

As others have said, there are some hard transitions, which is a shame, but overall, well done. I usually don’t like too much action, but since Michael Bay didn’t make it, it was ok. Haha. I like the B-movie feeling of it and the special effects stand up way better than a lot of movies that are much newer. (kinda sad, really) There did seem to be a bit of disconnect between characters, but no big deal. And having just watched another fanedit with every credit removed save the director, it was nice to see one with them intact. I’ll give this one a 7/10.

I have to disagree. This is an interesting edit, but the satirical elements of the original are there for a reason, to counterpoint the notion that Fascism can be a great idea. This version comes across much more like the WWII propaganda films it was meant to parody – the ones from the German side. It’s more disturbing than entertaining.

If you think the Germans were the only ones to use propaganda during war, you’re sadly mistaken. I am downloading this (one of my favorite movies, despite the cheese) of all time. I own every version of every movie (except the roughnecks cartoons), have read the book, and even had the trooper outfit at one time, so this is high on my list. The review will come shortly. If I ever get the tools and ambition, this would be the first thing I would tackle myself.

Never said they were, Dolphin. I don’t know how that could me construed from my comment. But if you want to address my opinion, please *watch* the edit first.
