Your intention for this fanedit: I wanted to present the mythology episodes of the X-Files in a theatrical way.テあ There were so many great stories and events leading up to the feature film FIGHT THE FUTURE.テあ I wanted to make these into movies that would give me the same experience.テあ What I have done here, is try to present the first season as a movie.テあ This film is represented by 5 episodes: the pilot, ‘Deep Throat,’ ‘Fallen Angel,’ ‘Tooms,’ and ‘The Erlenmeyer Flask.’テあ This is really the story of the start of the X-Files.

  4. X-Files – Exordium doesn’t feel like a big mainstream movie… for me it felt like a cool Independant film.

From my POV the film flows as well as it possibly can & the story has a continuity which is as good as it can get when you’re effectively editing 5 separate episodes together.

The most important thing is that it works as a whole & I don’t think that achievement should be underestimated.

I know the idea of taking a TV show & editing them into a flick isn’t new, but I don’t think anyone has achieved it to this level. Don’t let the fact there isn’t a million X-Files fan drooling over this the same way Star Wars fans did over EP 4 Revisited cloud you from the fact that ThrowgnCpr has mastered a new genre of Fanedits.

Title/FanEditor: The X Files: Exordium by Throwgncpr

Prologue: In Western classical rhetoric, the exordium was the introductory portion of an oration. The term is Latin and the Greek equivalent was called the Proem or Prooimion. (from Wikipedia.org). This is a great title to a special fanedit. Fans of The X Files will appreciate this introductory テ「竄ャナ吐ilmテ「竄ャツ culled from several episodes of the show that deal with the alien mythology, namely the pilot, テ「竄ャナ泥eep Throat,テ「竄ャツ テ「竄ャツ戳allen Angel,テ「竄ャツ テ「竄ャツ抖ooms and テ「竄ャナ典he Erlenmeyer Flask.テ「竄ャツ

The Edit: This is a monumental task. Editing five episodes of a show together into one long tale. Does it work? In a word, yes. There are some commercial fade outs and fade ins — but most have been trimmed away. Many of my favorite scenes are present and I found myself wishing that there were more X Files fanedits to watch. One can only hope that Throwgncpr has a few more in him. Overall, there was a sense of point A to point B, culminating in a climax, just like a real film. (It did not flow like several episodes sewn together.) In a few instances, some noticeable changes occur, namely in Scullyテ「竄ャ邃「s hair style, face and body (due to her pregnancy). I mentioned before how テ「竄ャナ摘xordiumテ「竄ャツ is a great title. This fanedit is the introduction that leads to several more tales of alien mythology investigated by our favorite paranormal investigators Mulder and Scully. ****/*****

Image Quality: The image has been reframed from 4:3 to 16×9 and it looks about the same as the show when it aired on TV. Some backgrounds were a bit muddy and macroblocking was evident on my display テ「竄ャ窶 it did not deter from my enjoyment of the film. Colors were muted just as I remember them from the weekly episodes. Basically, it is a reflection of the source material used. ***/*****

Audio Quality: Dialog and sound effects were loud and centered in the front channels. Ambient noise and effects panned into the rears when appropriate on my Dolby ProLogic II set-up. ****/*****

The DVD: Besides the film, there are some coming attractions for other edits as well as chapter stops. The menus are a combination of animated and static and are very easy to navigate (I love when I can go up or down on my remote). ****/*****

Overall Rating: An Xphileテ「竄ャ邃「s delight. Well worth a viewing for even casual fans. ****/*****

Epilogue: I hope there are more X Files fanedits to come, featuring additional pivotal (and fan favorite) characters such as Skinner, Krycek, X, the Lone Gunmen, and more of the Cigarette Smoking Man. This exordium has me ready to enjoy more of the story.

  7. Excellent fanedit. I am not an Xphile by any means, as I have barely watched more than a couple of episodes on TV. This is an amazing job of making a cohesive film from the first season. Picture looked a little soft at times due to the reformatting to 16:9 and occasional zooming needed to hide the credits, but this is a minor quibble about an exciting Fanedit! Recommended!

  8. Just finished watching it.
I was really looking forward to this one. I use to watch the show while it was still on the air.
After watching Exordium I’m beginning to wonder what I liked about the show.

    VIDEO
The pilot episode was very soft. A lot of artifacts and the reframing of some shots could have used some headroom. but the composition gets better.
there are some flash-frames here and there but only something that my trained eye can spot.

    AUDIO
Sounded good. No noticeable pops. Heard one tight audio edit.

    STORY/ENTERTAINMENT
For me, the best kind of editing is the one that is invisible.
As soon as I sense editing-in-action I get pulled from the movie experience.
For me it came during the pilot episode.
I started to get the feeling that Scully and Mulder were in every scene. It was relentless.
I didn’t remember the show being this way. And because there was no break to a subplot or another character, Scully and Mulder started to get on my nerves.

And then at the end of the pilot, again some strange editing choices that never pay off and are not really that interesting or scary.
Aside from the trooper guy, that doesn’t sound like Mulder’s voice on the phone. Is that you T?

And then eps 2 starts with the pre-title tease follow with a dissolve into S&M. They both look really different and there’s no indication that time has passed.

Then they are at the airfield looking at the strange lights in the sky when suddenly they see a chopper approaching they pull their guns an start to run…?
And then it’s morning and either they got away or something got away from them, I don’t know which.

I know the next episode starts when I see Skinner and cancer man. Was that the best introduction for Skinner?

I know that this is supposed to be about mystery but in a real movie there is nothing that you see that doesn’t have a reason for it. If you introduce something/someone in act one, it pays off in act 3.
Similarly if you’re going to show us a wet guy at a phone booth who turns out to be the first human/alien hybrid, I think he deserves an introduction.

if someone didn’t know the X-Files they’d be most confused.

By now I’m starting to see everything as silly. Such as:
A Top Secret Human/Alien experiment that’s stored at a Public warehouse?
A Secret password that’s labeled on the bottom of a beaker. (purity control)?
A top Scientist that manages to crossbreed a human with Alien genes thats killed because he was too successful?

On a technical level audio was fine but Video was soft in some parts.

On the editing level, there were some jumpy edits but not many.

On a story editing/entertainment level, it felt long and tedious.

For me this film became X-FILES – EXHAUSTING

On my street-wise rating system I give this film an

  9. *from the forum*

first off – i really liked this. it was a fun adventure collecting a few important stories throughout season 1. in all it felt SLIGHTLY connected, but it was pretty obvious when one story ended and a new one began. i’m not sure if this could be avoided, but as a “movie” this isn’t seamless and kinda breaks apart when under scrutiny (like who are all of these other characters? they are never introduced). as a “tv mini-series” this works well, and how i chose to think about it while watching it. :)

i think it will be important to introduce characters in your next mythology episode.

regarding technical quality, i did notice a few hard audio cuts and the picture quality was a bit lacking (probably from cropping) but not too distracting. there was an odd transition from M&S on the hill being chased by the helicopter and then …?

the pacing really gives this away as a TV show cut into a movie… very rollercoaster like. it didn’t BOTHER me, but just was very telling.

i think that several scenes could have done better with a different cropping selection (a lot of heads are chopped) and really nothing exciting is happening at the bottom of the screen except for a few text placements on occasion, but that is being picky.

what i DID like was really streamlining the stories. cutting out a lot of unimportant characters helps this move along (like the kids at the airbase, etc.).

there is room for improvement technically, so i’m giving this a 4/5. i really look forward to more mythology xfiles edits in the future!

  10. I have been a die hard X-Files fan since the first episode in 1993. Having seen every episode probably dozens of time (though it has been a while), I was really looking forward to watching this fanedit. Unfortunately, it did not live up to what I was expecting.

Often, when there was action on the screen, most noticeably when a character was walking towards the camera, the entire image seemed jumpy. We tested it and feel that this was not a fault with our computer, but a fault with the movie itself. I realize that it was cut so that commercial fades were not evident, however I found the jumps from scene to scene to often be too abrupt. I actually did not take notice of the cropping which others have complained about, so I cannot comment on that myself. The background music seemed loud at times, and I wanted to turn it down, however the audio would then have been too quiet, so I had to live with it.

I think that putting in the scene from “Fallen Angel” and then not introducing Max Fenig as a character was poor judgment. The scene did not advance the story any, and then neglected to introduce a character that continues to re-appear throughout the series.

Overall, I think that considering how difficult a task making this “movie” must have been, it was as good a job as could be done. It was long, though, and as adamant a fan as I am, I was hoping it would end soon for at least the last third of the movie.

    Review by Hokie97 — August 20, 2009 @ 12:01 am

  11. I watched this last night. I’m not a HUGE fan of the show and have only watched the so-called ‘mytharc’ episodes and none of the ‘monster of the week’ ones. But I do like it. I was excited about watching Exordium, because I like the idea of making a movie type experience from tv episodes. However, in the end I was mostly disappointed.

It was just too long and too talky for me. I was bored by the half way point and was already thinking of what I was going to say here. The edit was technically very good and I appreciated what the editor was trying to do, but I feel very strongly that the source material is just not good enough to sustain a two hour watching experience. Maybe 90 minutes would have been better?

That said, If ThrowgnCpr makes another one of these from episodes of The X-Files, I would definitely watch it. I want it to work. And I think that’s because I like the concept of The X-Files, I just don’t always like the execution of it. I think I would rather have watched it all as a series of TV movies.

  12. so nice to see some X-Files again and I love them in widescreen. This was obviously a lot of work and I had a lot of fun watching this movie, even though it did not truly play like a movie for me. Thank you, Throwngcpr.

  13. It was working really well up until it switched to the most recent episodes. In the end I was a little lost but mostly pained with my remembered disappointment in the show. The editing was well done, but the characters and production in the end of the movie look noticeably different than in the beginning. Was there not an earlier episode that could have made a better conclusion?
