In The Spotlight – Matrix

Ever since the official release of the Matrix sequels, complaints never stopped.
Why? Well, because the expectations after the genius first movie could not be matched at all by the mediocre, if not weak sequels. The creators tried hard with more special effects, more action, more philosophy, more love, but failed to see what made the first one so great: the story.
Of course these sequels caused plenty of faneditors to take on the challenge and create new versions, be it as one movie, or as 2 vastly different ones. Although there are no deleted scenes available, the length of both sequel movies as well as “The Animatrix” and the video games allowed the use of a lot of footage.
The fanedits on Fanedit.org are by far not all the ones ever created, but the ones that passed the high standards of quality management for publicly released fanedits. Several wilder takes, like a sequel movie in Chinese (to allow subtitles to alter the spoken word, because hardly anyone speaks Chinese
) or an MTV version were not executed well enough.
The Matrix Dezionized by CBB is still the most successful of the sequel fanedits. The first release was in 2005, when fanedits were still hardly known by anyone. It gained huge attention and was downloaded at least 100000 times and discussed on 100s of websites and forums. It had an updated and improved release in July 2006, which outmatched the previous success. The idea to drop Zion entirely from the movie had a huge impact on the story and was and still is appreciated by most of the fans and considered the best fanedited version of the sequels.
The Matrix Hacked by DoctorM keeps the structure of the 2 movies alive and presents a truly visionary take, yet very experimental and as that with the feeling of being not entirely consistent – still this “what the Matrix sequels could have been” version is considered to be among the very best of the Matrix fanedits and gained quite a lot of attention.
While all the efforts on saving the sequels from being a major disappointment are great, it so far was never achieved to give them the magic of the first one. Fans of the franchise will probably be able to find highly improved works, but not to a level that pleases everyone. And maybe that is not even possible. But the last word on Matrix fanedits has not been spoken or written yet. The interest is there…
