In The Spotlight – Superman

SUPERMAN… one of the oldest and most famous superheroes ever. The incredibly successful franchise started in 1932 and subsequently appeared in various radio serials, television programs, films, newspaper strips, and video games.

If we talk about Superman fanedits, we have to talk about a very important release: Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut. This is a 2006 re-edit of the 1980 superhero film, Superman II, by Richard Donner, who shot a large part of the original movie before being replaced as director by Richard Lester. And when it comes to such a drastic re-edit of a major blockbuster, fan-reactions are always the same: some praise it, some hate it, but hardly anyone is 100% satisfied and the big time of comparison starts, where fans discuss the best parts of Lester/Donner and why this or that is better in the original or the new cut. A fanedit discussion.

We’ve seen it happen with George Lucas, trying to revive Star Wars with the new prequels, then with Ridley Scott presenting what he calls “The Final Cut” of Bladerunner. While fans appreciate to get their hands on new material and a different version, they also start to doubt about the result. Instead of just swallowing, what is given to them, they question decisions and get a more analytical view. And in that the desire starts for their own personal “Final Cut”.

Superman 2 is one of the most fanedited movies ever. So far there are 8!!! different versions of this movie available on Fanedit.org – as usual this is not all there is, but it’s the best of what was publically released. These fanedits are discussed a lot and shared on many Superman boards and the fans simply seem to cannot get enough – maybe because the best has not been created yet or maybe because there cannot be a “best” cut for everyone. With the release of “The Richard Donner Cut”, this movie was condemned to no longer be “just a movie”. It became a questionable one.

And this development is a direct cause for fans to start fanediting. Thank you, Richard Donner, you brought more talent to this artform.

While “Superman – The Movie” and “Superman 2″ are widely considered good movies, the 2 sequels (“Superman 3″ and “Superman 4″) are more seen as turds. The fans like them for completion of their collections, but their cheap and cheesy production is hardly satisfying. Quite some faneditors took a take at these 2 to “repair” the damage and have managed to present watchable if not enjoyable versions.

“Superman Returns”, the last Superman movie for now, suffered from replacing the icon Chistopher Reeve with a new actor and also from a rather weak plot. Most of the fans were still from the Reeve generation and could not adapttoo well to such a new take. Several fanedits of this movie were created to make it less offensive and more in the spirit of the old and loved ones.

RECOMENDED FANEDITS:
(based on ratings, comments, views and overall reactions)

SUPERMAN 2 – THE HYBRID CUT by ADigitalman is still the most successful and highest rated version of “Superman 2″. With great care ADM managed to create a trimmed and improved movie from the Lester / Donner cuts, not offensive, not drastic, but with a fantastic understanding for the fans, who simply wanted thes best possible cut.

SUPERMAN 2 – THE DEJA VU CUT by Litemaker is a totally different, alternate version of the movie and widely considered one of the best takes in creating an entirely new watching experience.

SUPERMAN III – THE DEFINITIVE SMALLVILLE CUT by Father Merrin is a serious & dark version of Superman III using Smallville elements from Superman I & IV. It provides a very entertaining and much improved take on the weak original.

SUPERMAN REDEEMED by ADigitalMan carefully combines two stories of Superman III and Superman IV into one trimmed and improved tale.

Superman II: The Adventure Continues: by The Final Cut
This fanedit is supposed to be the best version of Superman II ever made, with an emphasis on the “Donner” vision, using only the best and “completed” scenes…no workprint footage, no deleted scenes, a film that would reasonably be in theaters and be the followup to Superman: The Movie… also to fix all the technical mistakes, bad FX (Donner), bad editing, and lame corniness of the original Superman II

Superman Returns: Kryptonite Runtime Edition: by Kemposato
This film would have played a lot better had the tempo of the film not been an homage to the pacing of Donner’s original. With 24 minutes of un-needed lengths removed, this is a much faster paced version of SUPERMAN RETURNS
