How have you started making fanedits and why are you making them? The plan was to go to film school, but when that dream was derailed, I decided to have a computer built specifically for film editing and to buy a camera and to basically teach myself how to make movies through trial and error. But before I could make my own movie, I had to learn how to use the software first. And what better way to learn how to edit than to start with territory you know and are familiar with? So naturally, I started with what I knew best…Star Wars.
Three years later, I still haven’t bought a camera…haven’t shot one frame of film…but I continue to work on Star Wars. It’s funny how life works out sometimes.
My advice to any aspiring faneditor? START SMALL!!! Don’t choose the largest multi-generational sci-fi/fantasy franchise of all time with a backdrop that spans six films to start with. Star Wars is a friggin’ quagmire, Man… But I will conquer it one day soon. I vow right now in front of everyone. I will conquer it and deliver something truly unique when Reborn is finally released.
Is there a specific kind of fanedits you want to make? Anything that tries to go beyond just adding or deleting scenes. What interests me is to try and find opportunities to really do something different with the source material and transform it into an alternate experience markedly different from the original.
Do you have a faneditor idol? I admire MagnoliaFan for doing some really interesting things with Episode I from a story standpoint. He really tried to do something unique and complex that significantly changed the narrative and altered the experience for the viewer. And ADigitalMan – you’ve gotta give the guy props as the most prolific faneditor out there. I mean, the man’s done literally 50 individual edits! He’s the Stephen King of fanediting. You’ve got to respect that.
Will you continue making fanedits? Absolutely. I’m kicking several ideas around in my head right now.
What are your favorite fanedits, which you didnʼt create yourself? Adywan just blew me away
completely with his “S.W. – A New Hope: Revisited” project. The effects, the menus…you couldn’t ask for more…He seriously raised
the bar for all of us in terms of quality and really inspired me by
proving what is possible for just a regular guy sitting in his living
room on a home computer. It’s just amazing.
