Some interview questions:

  • How have you started making fanedits and why are you making them?

My first “fanedit” was a VHS recording from an Alien DVD back in 1999, restoring all the deleted scenes. Was very frustrating editing like that, but had lots of ideas in my head from that.
Followed the progress of many Star Wars restoration projects, and stumbled across ADigitalMan’s fanediting guide, and decided to give it a go. Was also frustrated that a whole load of Sergio Leone films hadn’t been released in decent full length versions, missing footage, missing music and bad 5.1 remixes. So decided to restore as best I could the full length versions with original soundtracks.
I’ve come to love this hobby quite a bit, there’s a lot of satisfaction when a project is finished.

  • Is there a specific kind of fanedits you want to make?

I tend to make extended or restored versions of films. Want to try my hand at more complicated edits though.

  • Do you have a faneditor idol?

ADigitalMan is a favourite of mine

  • Will you continue making fanedits?

Yes, I have a huge list of ideas for future edits

  • What are your favorite fanedits, which you didn’t create yourself?

Dune The Reconstructed Workprint (ADM)
The Matrix DeZIONized (CBB)
Superman II: The Hybrid Cut (ADM)
The Warriors: TV Composite (Tranzor)

Newspost: LeoneNut receives the FE Faneditor’s Award

Although he has started fanediting on VHS in 1999, he got known to the FE community in 2007, when already a lot of his outstanding works were available for quite some time, but only to a few as a wide release was not usual at the time, when he finished them. It was a bit of an effort to invite him over here, but finally Leonenut arrived and his arrival brought an incredible increase of quality to the page. His first fanedits were famous Spaghetti Westerns, which he has a huge love for, but was never satisfied with the censored and chopped up versions the audiences were presented with. So he changed that and gave us the most complete versions ever of legendary movies like “ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST” or “THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY“. Extended, completed and restored editions became some kind of Leoneut’s brand, and he himself sees his wonderful work on LEGEND among his best, which he presented in 2 versions (the workprint and the extended edition) to grant the audience as much detail and quality as possible. Where it takes other faneditors a few days to complete a fanedit, Leonenut works for weeks, sometimes months, until he is satisfied with the result, only to still later come back and create an even improved version, when the technology makes it possible. He is truly a perfectionist. In late 2007 he finished his first true fanedit: CONAN THE DESTROYER and presented us a finally watchable version of this incredibly embarrassing movie. There he proved, his talents were beyond extending, but even in cutting to improve and knowing, how a movie should work and flow. And he has a lot of fanedits still on his plate… we can’t wait. This award is as well deserved as it can be.

Leonenut’s True Fanedits

Aliens – The Hybrid Cut
What is it about? This is the simplest cut of the ALIEN lot, using the Special Edition version simply removes scenes of the colonists and Newt’s family discovering the Space Jockey’s ship. I actually like all the extended scenes in this version but dislike the whole Newt’s family scene (I used to have to skip it every time). I’ve kept the first outdoor shots of “Hadley’s Hope” however as it gives a preview of the “shake and bake” colony. A better paced version.

Conan – The Destroyer – Serious Edition
What is it about? This an attempt to make Conan the Destroyer (1984) a more serious movie. Conan the Barbarian (1982) was probably one of the finest fantasy films ever made. The sequel wasn’t unfortunately, it was toned down to get a PG rating, and added too much humour in the process. Annoyingly Conan was given not just one sidekick, but three of them, and each has cringeworthy one-liners or silly moments. Also a whiny girl was added into the mix, and Conan is made more of an idiot.

Sin City – Recut Extended Unrated Theatrical Cut
What is it about? Have taken the extended short stories and recut them in the same order as the theatrical cut to make a more fulfilling version.

Leonenut’s Extended Editions

Alien 3 – The Hybrid Cut
What is it about? This extends Alien 3 to have a version with the extended Assembly Cut scenes but with the dog birth footage instead of the cow. It also restores the Queen bursting out of Ripley.

Re-Animator – Re-Animated
What is it about? This version restores all the scenes from R-rated cut back to the unrated cut, to make an extended movie.

Alien – The Hybrid Cut
What is it about? This version puts back the extra Director’s cut scenes into the Theatrical Cut. It also adds three scenes that were restored for the Director’s Cut but not used, so the quality is consistent throughout. Also restores the 1979 Fox fanfare and alternate alien transmission sound fx. This is Alien extended for best entertainment.

Legend – Extended Edition
What is it about? This extends LEGEND with as many of the extra scenes and shots from the two theatrical cuts to the Director’s Cut where feasible. Your full Legend adventure.

Legend – Workprint
What is it about? This extends LEGEND with as many of the extra scenes and shots from the two theatrical cuts to the Director’s Cut where feasible. It also adds back the original 4 Goblins intro scene and the Faerie Dance sequence (using storyboard elements) for a complete LEGEND experience.

Manhunter – Extended Edition
What is it about? There are 4 different commercially available cuts of this film, all with their own unique scenes and footage. This now is a composite version with every scene

Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid: Extended
What is it about? The 2005 cut of this film was a travesty and deleted many great sequences, but added some really good scenes and shots in the process. These scenes were added back to the longer and better Turner Preview version.

Once Upon A Time In The West – Extended Italian Version
What is it about? This fanedit preserves the extended Italian version and restore some of the extra shots from the shorter version with original English and Italian mono soundtracks. Also restores some missing music found in the Italian version. It’s the longest version of “C’era Una Volta Il West” you will probably ever get.

I got a dope idea for you. I’m a huge Tarantino fan, and as you probably already know, most of his movies have overlapping characters and closely relating stories. You should make an edit with Reservior Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Death Proof, and later Inglorious Bastards all in ONE HUGE EPIC MOVIE. (I haven’t yet figured out how you’d include Jackie Brown). I would do it myself, because I have years of editing experience including film school, but I never have owned my own equipment. Write back if you’re interested or email me and I can break down how it can be put together. EWJ1019@yahoo.com
