Synopsis:
After uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins - a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer H.A.L. 9000.
Evoking the emotions of the original, this tackles shot lengths and pacing and highlights H.A.L.'s motivations for a more approachable version of the film.
New watchers of the film should find this more approachable. Thank you for considering...The Short Cut.

Intention:
As a lover of the film, 2001 is challenging to introduce to new audiences. I wanted a way to show the amazing story without the overhead of 1968 editing technology influencing shot length.
Release Information:
Digital
Editing Details:
Shortening the film using only existing sounds proved challenging mostly for sound reasons. Much of the film is scored, with score, sound effects, and dialogue all intermixed. So particular care was taken to use sound and music in creative ways in the new shot construction.
Cuts and Additions:
* deeply shortening the prehistory sequence. (The book is concise here.)
* shortening and in some cases removing the multiple montage docking sequences
* cutting back to dramatic tension elements at key moments (monolith in the prehistory sequence, H.A.L. later)
* changing the timewarp / ending order considerably
* trims throughout
* no added CGI, and no added sounds

* cutting back to dramatic tension elements at key moments (monolith in the prehistory sequence, H.A.L. later)

This is a hard one to evaluate, because I really love the original film. It’s a classic, one of the best films of all time and Stanley Kubrick is a genius…
But I have to say, great job on part of @holyalamo. The cuts are perfect, the quality is flawless.
The prologue sequence in particular is well made, it was a bit too long in the original. As were the docking sequences; they were very impressive in 1968, but way too dragged and over the top in modern times.
The changes in the ending are up to each viewer, because here we have @holyalamo’s interpretation. And that’s fine; it’s a slightly different view from the original.
Overall, great work and flawless technique, congrats!

From a modern perspective 2001: A Space Odyssey is probably in need of a good trim, the then-revolutionary visual and model effects sequences in particular having the potential to test audience patience (e.g. the moon landing platform descent). I personally am rather fond of the film and so found myself missing certain parts (e.g. the famous match-cut and staggered zoom) even if they are inconsequential, but from a narrative standpoint there is nothing to complain about and many of the cuts made to speed up proceedings are hardly or never noticeable.
The one section that I much prefer in the original is the Stargate sequence, the visuals in my opinion need time to breath (albeit maybe not the full near-ten minutes) and the flashback inserts to it during hotel room scene felt unneeded. I haven't got the original to hand for comparison, but it seems that a couple of times footage has been speeded up and this feels a little out of place.
In all quite an ambitious first edit, well done holyalamo!

So I was really excited about this one, as someone who couldn't get into the original but felt that I could have with just a few changes. This edit, while drastically improving my experience, did also confirm a theory I had upon first watching the film:
I actually didn't mind the length of the original film in and of itself as much as I minded it's editing. And I do mean by a LOT.
I've always enjoyed long movies (and I mean LONG movies), so my struggling with one that was only about 2.5 hours surprised me. Watching The Short Cut, I can honestly say - and this may surprise some - I would have been happy with an even longer version!
The way that the scenes of the ships, stations, and the docking sequences were recut to better suit the tempo and movements of the music was so delightful, truly creating a sort of visual dance. It felt open, airy, and whimsical in a way that the original simply didn't. It made the choice of songs feel stronger, their purpose in illustrating an awe about the setting ring clearer. It, funnily enough, made me actually wish for some of their length BACK so that I could keep enjoying the sequence. That's not just good editing, that's GREAT editing.
Now, I did find myself thinking, in some of the smaller cuts done during the HAL/Jupiter transit portion, that the time saved was to my perspective no longer needed for the movie to feel snappy. I imagine some might argue that the trimming done to some of the space walk stuff was necessary, and I won't DISagree, but I tend to like longer scenes than others and will defer to my husband on this one lol But small bits, like the lead into Dave entering the POD a second time, could have been left in for some extra breathing room.
That said, there were only very few times when I thought the cuts didn't quite feel right, and mostly in the Dawn of Man portion. Then again, it may not be possible to trim that down with the footage available in a way that's any smoother than it was, and it didn't hinder my enjoyment at large, but while I liked the new transition into "2001" I felt the sequence leading into it was just okay. It did highlight though how well done the scenes after it were, feeling very seamless and undisruptive as a whole even though I'd seen the movie just two days ago or so and knew they should be there. Things like the redundant question in the board meeting, as well as the overly long video call, were not missed at all. Sorry, Haywood.
Speaking of, I think the only thing I did actually miss VERY much (instead of just wishing certain sequences were still longer) was a great deal of the "star gate" (I think it's called) sequence. I do like the idea of inter-cutting, to keep this review sort of vague, and it obviously needed to be trimmed, but I think I would have preferred only a minor to moderate trim. And, if I'm remembering the sequences right, I don't think the scenes in "the room" or at the end needed to be quite so short either. But again I do prefer my movies and scenes longer than most, so it's entirely possible this is a better all purpose short cut.
Like certainly, if I was going to show someone the movie as a first time watch, I would in all likelihood start here and then show them the original the way others use a "director's cut" if they were interested!
All-in-all, I find this fanedit to be a fascinating example of what you can better understand when it comes to what you did or didn't like about a movie just by seeing it changed. I had a suspicion it was editing and not length bugging me, sure, but I wouldn't have guessed I could be left wanting MORE of some of those space sequences to be sure! And yet, seeing them (sorry for the potential film heresy) in the hands of a better editor did make me feel just that.
I would happily give this cut (as a movie, whereas I scored enjoyment as an experience) a solid 7/10, compared to the 4/10 I gave the original, even if I do think it could have been longer. This did a much better job of using the visuals to captivate and set the tone, rather than to sort of just gesture proudly at them as if to distract me with flashy visuals without also using them very well.
Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into this! I look forward to seeing more from you in the future!
P.S. Shaving almost 40 full minutes off this movie while keeping it comprehensible and at a good pace was no small feat! Goodness!!!

I really enjoyed this cut! It's been quite a while since I saw the original, but I've seen the original about a dozen times. One of the things that you very much improved was the flow of the narrative. The original is much like a ballet, where the feeling of the story is also an equal part of the story. Here it seems as though you sought to tell a tiger story at the slight expense of some visual dancing.
I won't say every cut was perfect (in particular I noticed a seemingly unnecessary harsh cut during the airlock explosion scene, where in the original it was a smooth fade). I did however really enjoy your take on the star gate scene, that even as he ages in The Room he's still travelling in the gate.
Overall this was very enjoyable! I can't say it will replace the original for me (maybe if it was 30 mins shorter it would make a great piece for quick viewings) but I had a great time watching it!

The edits where well made and I did not notice a difference in terms of picture and sound quality compared to the original. However, I feel that, in order for this edit to called "The Short Cut", it should've been trimmed down a lot more. For new audiences, this will still painfully slow. I think this edit could be edited down to 70-80 minutes and drastically improve.

I must confess, I failed to pick up on the majority of the cutscenes / sequences.
The sound editing was very good, no jarring jumps etc. I really noticed just how much the sound track, enhanced the film.
The visuals were very good, again flowed seamlessly.
thank you very much.
