Synopsis:
The Virtual Workprint, as edited by Josh Janson one of the more well-known edits of the film, is still my preferred cut of the film despite it's poor video quality. The HD Rebuild uses the most recent Blu-Ray to completely remake Josh Jenson's original edit from scratch in as high quality as possible.
The edit features 10 minutes of new footage, including 7 deleted scenes with an alternate opening and ending, and 10 additional shots and lines from trailers and more, while also trimming a few of the more over-the-top moments from the final film.

Intention:
Watching the Virtual Workprint after all these years, its still technically great, but the video quality just lets it down.
Hearing about the recent screenings of a 1994 workprint of the film got me thinking about this cut again. It's one of the few that doesn't try and really tone things down and rescores it with other Batman composers' music, so I enjoy it in that regard.
Taking the original audio, I went ahead and rebuilt the video from scratch.

Editing Details:
As the original edit was 360p, none of the original video was used. Instead I lined the edit up with the most recent Blu-Ray, and matched it frame-by-frame. Anything not from the film (trailers, deleted scenes) were then plugged into the edit and upscaled/colour corrected to match.
The original audio was used verbaitum with some minor edits, but is otherwise intact.

It's not the best Batman film by far, but it's very important to my childhood. One of the weaknesses is the exaggerated theme and the villain Two-Face, who is practically a generic Joker in this version. But even with all this, the film still has a lot of personality.

This is an interesting edit to do a review for, as it's a rebuild of a previous edit. I'll focus on the HD rebuild aspect of the edit for this review, rather than the specific changes made.
The Batman Forever Virtual Workprint is my favorite edit of Batman Forever. I feel it's the closest we'll have to a Director's Cut until maybe someday Warner Bros. decides to officially release one. The only problem I've ever had is that it's in SD. SD in itself isn't a deal breaker, it's just that when you know something is available, and indeed you have access to it, in HD, it can just be frustrating to be stuck with SD.
Bobson Dugnutt has, as expected, done a fantastic job. This is exactly the virtual workprint in HD as promised. The upscaling of the extra scenes is very well done. It all comes together nicely.
I only deducted one point because the audio seemed very low. I know the original audio from the virtual workprint was used, but I hadn't noticed the low volume on the original. Either way, it didn't hamper my enjoyment too much.

So i love the Red Book edit and wanted to try an edit of the film that doesn't try to veer to far from what the theatricals tone and look are. I enjoy this very much and obviously the deleted opening and ending plus the "red book' scene really should have stayed in the theatrical. Also loved the choice to switch the Wayne meeting Nygma scene to directly after the opening credits. The only complaint i can really state are the edit trims the "ill get drive thru"/"holy rusty metal, Batman!" lines but leaves way to much of Carrey's over-the-top shouting and one-liners. I would have liked to have scene some of his wackier moments toned way down. I would def recommend this one to fans looking for something in-between the theatrical and the radically altered Red Book cut!

A few weeks back I had watched the Red Book Anniversary fanedit with my Dad. It was the first time he had seen a fanedit from beginning to end. One of the things he noted was how that the changing of the color palette to a more washed out/b&w tone felt almost like an entirely different movie, and how some scenes/moments from the original film were completely gutted from the edit. It got me wondering if there were any edits of Batman Forever that included the deleted scenes and still kept the overall feel of the original movie while removing/toning down some of the obnoxious bits.
I can happily say the Workprint Rebuild checked all boxes. It felt like, in my opinion, the closest we might get to seeing what a "Schumacher Cut" could look like.

After I finished watching this I flipped to the edit's Change Notes and was surprised to see so many! You kept all your edits seamless, and the many additions and few cuts were I think greatly to the film's benefit. I really liked the feel of the movie and the general tone that the Workprint narrative created. I actually had fun watching it, which was surprising because I remember being very unimpressed with this when I was younger. Either I'm getting old or the edit is just that good!
Great work updating this classic edit to HD!
