Synopsis:
Make the main character more likeable and focus on the ships and crew rather than alien hand to hand combat.
Intention:
Conceptually this movie might seem a bit silly - a flashy summer Hollywood blockbuster based on a classic board game, with a plot about naval ships versus aliens. But at the end of the day it has good bones, it just tries to do too much. What really drew me to the film was the ships, and the action sequences with alien closeups and hand to hand combat detracted from this. So I wanted to strip all that away and keep a balance of human characters and naval action that was a little less mainstream - no quota of comic relief scenes or over-explaining the action we're seeing. And once you scrub off all the excess Hollywood I feel like this film is a pretty fun ride.

Haven’t seen the original, remembered it after visiting the USS Wisconsin while on holiday, a sister ship of which (the Missouri) plays a part in this film, and thought I’d give it a go. Knew that it wasn’t well received so decided to try the edit first so I could judge it on its own merits.

While all the cuts are done well and the story makes logical sense even after losing 41 minutes, I didn’t find myself enjoying it massively, playing out almost like a variation of Pacific Rim (which came out the following year) that’s inferior in every aspect. Going by the edit’s description and cutlist though, making the characters more likeable and focusing on the ships, it sounds like this edit is an improvement on the source, and it was exciting to watch what I had seen (in a sense) as a static museum be brought to life in the third act. If the real-life hardware on display is of interest to you as it is to me, then this edit could well be too.

Created edit video file in DaVinci Resolve using own Blu-ray rip and .xml file provided by unfair, first time I’ve tried something like this but fairly straightforward (you need to make sure that source video file name matches that in the .xml) and allowed to exporting at whatever quality one desires, no glitches noticed.

Will update with a comparison if I get around to watching the original, thanks unfair for putting this together, don’t think I would have given the film a chance otherwise!
