1978

Fanedit Running Time:
140 minutes

Synopsis:
Story structure remains essentially the same as the original 3 part tv movie. A few continuity corrections. The only significant edit/cut is the conversation between Adama and Apollo about going down to Caprica. Otherwise, the biggest changes are FX enhancement to many scenes (eg. adding planets to the background), replacing dodgy FX shots (eg. Cylon Basestar descending on Carrillon) or background mattes and making some of the battle sequences less repetitive, while trying to maintain the visual look of the original without going overboard with CGI.
Intention:
Giving a beloved classic a fresh coat of paint!

I finally got around to watching this side-by-side with the original version. Without direct comparison, I wasn't able to tell what was edited. @"dkerin" 's editing is just that good!

His added ships blend in more seamlessly than the original ones. The Cylon Leader's view screen looks so natural and good that I think Larson had intended to do that but ran out of time or money. The multiplication of Vipers on Carillon's surface looks natural and fits the story better. The scene with Apollo walking through the mine is a far less distracting than the original.

Only one added effect seems incorrect in a few shots: the red nebula during the Carillon battle sometimes looks like a planet-sized object inside that solar system instead of star-nebula-sized object very far away.

The 720p render is a bit softer than the blu-ray, and the stereo sound is a bit less impressive than the blu-ray's 5.1. Despite these two details, I heartily recommend this edit as a superior replacement over the original!

I've been looking for this fan edit for quite a long time and boy was it worth the wait!!! David knocked this edit out of the park. Yes, this edit contains just minor edits but it fixes continuity and clears up some scenes which have made all the difference.

Where this fan edit truly shines is in the replacement of dodgy FX shots and the addition of new special effects. For years all I've ever seen is the trailer for this edit which wet my appetite for more. Seeing the full feature with new special effects is an absolute joy. This feature length 3-part TV movie is how it should've looked back when it was first aired.

I have the remastered Blu-ray boxset of the complete series and this fan edit will be my preferred way to watch it from now on. If you're a classic series BSG fan, get this fan edit! This is how this was meant to be seen!!!

I've been fortunate enough to see all of DKerin's BSG Fanedits, and they are top notch. This is the way Galactica was originally intended. The intent originally was for BSG to be shown as TV Movies, longer format instead of episodic. When ABC changed their minds, the producers were forced to come up with additional scripts quickly, which led to some uneven quality. These edits fix that and keep the story focused and tight. Well done.

Another direct hit from David Kerin as he knocks this special edition out of the park. With fresh effects, shots, additions and other neat surprises, the legend of Galactica is once again enhanced for another generation. This release came at a good time for me, as I've been feeling somewhat down the last couple of days, Galactica always has a habit of being there for me when I'm at my lowest and helping to pick me back up, so thankyou David for making a difference with your hard work.
