Synopsis:
The ghosts of a deceased couple are annoyed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a sketchy bio-exorcist to drive them out. In this cut, as soon as Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) die, they will not be heard again until the very end of the movie.
The story revolves more around this haunted house and all its weird inhabitants.
Intention:
The idea of removing lines of dialogue from the Maitlands came by accident. I muted the center channel to see if I could replace it with a dubbed stereo version of the movie from an older DVD, while retaining the surround quality of the Blu-ray.
I found that the Maitlands were quite interesting to look at while not talking.
Additional Notes:
Favorite moment: when the Maitlands meet Beetlejuice in the model. That was super fun to edit. Hardest cut: Gina Davis is so good, her character so subtle. I'm sorry I had to remove so much of her great work.
Special Thanks:
I wish to thank JasonFlippy for his guidance. This edit has been well improved thanks to the time he took to watch it and share notes!

This was a really cool edit to watch, especially since I've seen the original so many times. I tried my best to pretend I hadn't seen the original, which I think is where the 8 for Narrative comes from.

The editing itself is flawless in terms of transitions and cuts. There are a few moments where you can tell something is missing visually because a shot cuts short very quickly, but I think that falls under narrative. Still, it sticks out so I gave a 9 for that.

There are some really great moments where I LOVE that the ghosts are silent, and the editing works almost flawlessly for those scenes with only a few moments where it feels like something's missing. The problem comes in certain moments where motivation is a bit muddled but usually by the next scene you've figured it out.

Overall it's a very ambitious project, and honestly the excised 40 mins are barely missed, which is crazy considering how much stuff they contain. I had fun watching it and I think if you're a Betelgeuse lover you'll enjoy it too.

Up front I need to say I watched half of this before my ADHD got the better of me, so this review is reflective of that and I've tried to be as fair as possible.
This is a very interesting experiment and fairly ambitious. To take the Maitlands dialogue out seems like it's impossible but in some ways it kinda works. I think there needs to be a caveat that you keep in mind it's a unique project and have seen the movie before, so as to know what is going on. The intro is definitely interesting. It is a little jarring having a cold open like this, so I had to remind myself to consider this like an episode of a tv series, and then it felt better. I think what could have been done in this case was to set up expectations somehow by adding some element that is ubiquitous with TV, like maybe a faux network logo or something? The fundamental takeaway here and throughout the 30 mins that I watched, is that technically this is good. Everything flows well and visually works and has good pacing. context and narrative become the issue though. From what is shown, I'm never entirely sure what is happening. Things happen without context or reason. Character motivations are unclear. I thought to myself, "would these things be remedied if I watch all the way through to the end?", and I do not believe that is possible.
Visual and audio sound perfect to me, technically it's good.
There are just a few editing choices that I felt did not work. Some fade to/from black that I felt didn't work well and an audio fade that felt abrupt.
This is an interesting project and if you've seen Beetlejuice and know the story, it is fascinating to see. If you haven't seen Beetlejuice or don't remember the story, then I'm afraid I cannot recommend it as there will be confusion. With the source material that is available, I am not certain that this could have turned out any better and I think this was a valiant effort to make this work. There are some excellent effects work and so much kudos to the editor.
Thank you for attempting this and thank you for letting me check it out!
