Synopsis:
To create a version of Inglourious Basterds, which is less self-indulgent, at 102 mins, without any music and then add back in a single score from another movie to change the entire tone.
Intention:
In this edit, Part 1 of an ongoing series, the score from The Great Escape by Elmer Bernstein was used. Other versions will follow, each using music from just one cinematic score.
Additional Notes:
Some details. All but 10 secs of the original music have been removed. Aproximately 60 mins of the 102 mins runtime is scored. 31 minutes from the 91 minutes of available score were NOT used, either due to excessive repetion, or just not useable. No exact piece of music is used more than once (except 2 stings, that were doubled in length for dramatic purposes). All but 6 cues from the EXPANDED GREAT ESCAPE 2 CD set were used, but not all the music in those cues. Many were extensively reworked to fir the visuals and vice versa. 51 minutes of the original movie have been removed 2 minutes added Extensive full audio rebuild for many scenes Leimotifs, thems and melodies from the new score have been applied consistently to situations, characters and drama....a few have been used to either misdirect the viewer or to inject melodic irony. The THEME from THE GREAT ESCAPE, appears in many forms and stlyes on the original score; some are as expected, but the theme was also orchestrated dramatically, melancholy-like, tense and even a few cues which have dissonate orchestrations...these have been used to good effect. The 20 min intro with LANDA now runs 10 mins. LANDA scenes run for the most part UNSCORED (per the original), with a few stings or minor underscoring added where it felt appropriate. Some scenes are in black and white, and adjuested for high contrast where needed. Some scenes that were not previously scored, now are. Hitler's Rant is gone The Zoeller romance is gone Over exposition is gone The game in the tavern, is gone. The climax is restructured Over 80 sound FX were used throughout. New opening and end credits have been created. A new flashback has been added (which was used in The Tarantino Tales Episode 7, but was originally created for THIS edit).

AMAZING!!!

It is incredible how the Bernstein score both perfectly fit and transformed the source material. As I watched and the new score washed over me, I was transported back to the 1960s, to the bygone era of some Hollywood's finest WWII films -- The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare and, of course, The Great Escape. There are so many brilliant moments through out this edit, where the new music either seamless matches the mood or enhances it to a new, fresh level. One of the best examples of this is when Landa strangles Bridget -- you would swear the music was created specifically for that scene.

Every new music choice fits wonderfully. Though I thought the score was a tad loud during the Mexican Stand Off, as it occasionally made Aldo's dialogue challenging to clearly discern.

As someone who has tentatively dipped his toe in the audio replacement/rebuild pool, I am awe struck at the sheer amount and intricate foley work that had to be done throughout this project. It is an impressive achievement. And when a project is this intense, it easy for an occasional foley hiccup to occur. As I noticed there was a water splash sound effect around the 3 minute mark when Landa and LaPadite are talking outside.

The new desaturated opening was an astute choice and really adds to the mood and the sense of foreboding. It is extremely difficult to make colour footage look like authentic Black & White but Wraith has done an admirable job. However, I noticed some of the subtitles briefly took on a slight grey tint, making them difficult to read when against a dark or grey background.

The cutwork is mostly tight and the jettisoned material makes for well paced, tense new narrative. Though I think Zoller may have been cut back a wee too much. This becomes apparent during the Parisian restaurant meeting, as there are a couple abrupt cuts where Goebbel's subtitles are too brief and I momentarily lost all sense of character geography when Shosanna suddenly appears by Zoller at the table.

In the end, I thoroughly LOVED this edit! I know Wrath has another version forthcoming, same cut but this time with a score by Morricone, which I am sure will be equally great, but at this moment, it is hard imagine anything surpassing this one. But that is the magic and power of music!

Bravo Wrath! Highly recommended!

I just finished watching this, wanted to say it's absolutely amazing and the music is totally transformative! I loved every second of it.

My top takeaways (SPOILERS!) that I thought were surprising improvements:
- moving Shoshanna's family's death to a later flashback
- removing Sam Jackson's voiceover
- hiding the swastika carving reveal until Hans Landa, really made the moment more intense!
- removing the guessing game in the bar, which while fun felt a bit masturbatory on Tarantino's part
- entirely removing Zoller worked so well, I'm shocked.
- Shoshana lives at the end! (I think?) Love it!

The audio was done extremely well given how much of a role music plays in Tarantino's films, though there were a few moments where it felt more obvious than others that something had been removed. I also noticed one popping sound in the "Mobile" version of the edit at 41:20, and the shoe sound 1:22:28 was overly loud. In total though given the massive scope of the audio editing there is no way to have given this edit less than a 9 on audio.

Truly an incredible change to this movie, a movie I absolutely love, and I'll be watching it again in the future. Looking forward to the next version of this as well with different music!

After a lot of issues my internet being too slow because of the heat. I finally had the chance to sit down and watch this.
I have to say it felt almost like a new film. I enjoyed it, there are parts that Wraith cut down that I usually skip over or just distract myself during. I love that I was seated and paying attention even though at this point I can read the subtitles for the German in my head, after how many times I've watched the original.
Now onto the juice, the gravy, the creme perhaps. The music. It felt perfect in this movie, like a campy 60s war flick. Which this movie IS a love letter to. I felt that especially when trumpets started in the first act it was right at home.
Cheers to you my friend, your experiment went off wish a smash.
Bingo!
Cheers, your friend,
Juggy
