Synopsis:
Rodney Dangerfield’s presence in Caddyshack is removed as much as possible to make this movie a lot more funny. So, say goodbye to Al Czervik: The original Jar-Jar.
Intention:
To remove Rodney Dangerfield’s presence in Caddyshack as much as possible.
Additional Notes:
I hate Rodney Dangerfield. With a passion. He is not funny. Never was. His annoying presence stands out even more in Caddyshack next to comedic greats like Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. I have no idea how Dangerfield managed to make a successful career in comedy. But I don’t understand the appeal of Nascar either, so maybe it’s just me. I would’ve loved to cut him completely out of the movie, but you need him for the final match against Judge Smails. To create tension during the match, you also need Judge Smails to hate him. So unfortunately, he has to pop up from time to time and go through some annoying hijinks. I’ve reduced his presence as much as possible while still retaining the plot. I think the movie is better and funnier for it. So, say goodbye to Al Czervik: The original Jar-Jar.
Cuts and Additions:

removed Al pulling up to the club
removed Al in the Pro Shop
removed the caddy struggling with Al’s bag
removed Al’s “Where’s your hat?” line
removed Al’s remote-controlled pop-up driver scene
removed Judge Smails getting hit in the balls scene
removed the “Let’s dance” scene
removed Al’s Albert Einstein putter scene
removed Al’s real estate bit
removed Al eating and talking to the guests at the dinner party
removed Al ordering a drink at the dinner party
removed the dancing at the dinner party
removed the kid puking in the sunroof and the couple discovering it
removed Al getting a call on his club bag phone
removed “Hey everyone, we’re all gonna get laid!”

Neglify’s critique:

(Disclaimer. I have watched this fanedit.)

I’ve wanted to see this edit for a while, ever since stumbling into the thread for this, which has become one of my all time favorites. The fact that the cut list for the edit caused so much debate made me need to see it. But it was offline! So I bided my time, quietly waiting for it come back. Much to my surprise, Adabisi recently started re-uploading his fanedits to Usenet. Praise Jeebus.

Allow me to quickly weigh on the BIG ISSUE at hand. I love Caddyshack and I never had a problem with Dangerfield. He wasn’t a comic genius nor was he the anti-Christ. I find him funny in this movie (and Back To School) but I never saw much more of him than those. Now onto the edit.

Technical – I watched the avi version. The picture was fine for an xvid avi. All editing cuts worked well.

Story Telling – Is Cvervik vital to the plot? Yes. Adabisi wisely didn’t try to cut every frame of the character as that would have made the plot a mess. What’s left is exactly how much of the character that is needed to keep the story coherent.

Entertainment – Listen people. Even though 1 of the 4 main characters was cut down this movie is still hysterical. Sure the line “Hey everyone we’re all gonna get laid!” isn’t in it. And yeah I love “What’s with the pictures? It’s a parking lot!” But you know what other parts of Caddyshack I love? Even more than them? The Dalai Lama monologue. Gopher poontang. The Bob Marley joint. The Baby Ruth bar. “You take drugs, Danny?” “Every day.” “Good. Then what’s your problem?”

This is still a comedy classic. And the original Caddyshack still exists! Comedy has not been destroyed.

You can tell the character is missing and with the mass of drama between the young caddy and the girl and the minimal screentime Billy Murry and Chevy chase had.. the movie is heavily lacking in comedic content.

It's funny, I was reading the "Changes" log and it's like you were listing the best parts of the movie! lol. This edit is ridiculous that it even exists but that's it's appeal. Just something you can say to your friends "hey want to watch a Rodney Dangerfieldless version of Caddyshack?"

caddyshack is such a familiar movie now that without rodney it is… different? it changes the feel a bit, but keeps rodney’s best bits.

still, it might not replace the original for me… a solid idea and execution, tho. 8/10

I had a problem writing up this review. Let it be known that I was 100% against the idea for this edit and I still am. The sub heading title of "no respect" sums up my view for this nicely. This edits focus is mainly on removing as much as Dangerfield's presence in the film as possible. What I find especially aggravating is the amount of hatred the editor clearly has for this actor and not just in this film, but life in general.

To say Dangerfield was never funny is a strong slap in the face and a huge insult to one of the most legendary comics there was.

I always liked Dangerfield and I will agree with the editor on one thing:

You're right I have no idea how people like Nascar either (I would rather glue my eyelids shut than watch that), but hating Dangerfield and saying he is not funny technically is saying you do not like comedy.

At any rate let me put the personal attack aside and let's move forward!

Essentially it is almost ripping the heart out of the film and smashing it underfoot. Surely you cannot take a classic and remove some great material and still have something good can you? For the film's sake you can. What is present still shines through and a testament to just how good this film is. You have an all star line up of actors, a well written script and they all have talent. This is a rare occasion when everyone brings it to the table
and no one is really outshining the other, a very nice blend.

However, Dangerfield hands down had the most over the top scenes in the film and in this case that was a good thing.

The issue I am having is that I love this film. Even with what Adabisi removed I still love the film. This creates a level of enjoyment while watching and his cuts did not bother me for this reason. Sadly this means his edit works. I think it was a bad move, but in terms of general flow it worked fine.

I will chalk it up this way, if this was shown on tv and edited for time only, you might end up with a print such as this one

If you saw Caddyshack before and loved the film, you might get the same feeling I had while watching this (what is left was still very good and held the film strongly). If you never saw it, you might find this to be really funny and in that case I strongly recommend you seeing the full version because you are missing on some classic moments

Tech:
The editing and sound were perfect with no issues in the slightest. The picture looked a
little grainy and I know this was from the dvd transfer. The film is presented in a matted widescreen ratio (which the region 1 US special edition uses) as the film was shot full frame open matte (so if you need that one get the old 1997 barebones release)

The dvd has chapters and a generic menu

in closing:
Giving this a rating is where my biggest problem is going to lie

For editing, video and sound
This gets a 10, I noticed nothing at all.

For menus this gets a 2. It was a generic still shot with a play button and that was it.

I cannot rate on anything else because personal bias comes into play.

Consider this an alternate version of the film, but in no way superior to the original

Overall rating gets an 8 from me, but not because I want to.
