I've watched both the Melford and the purist versions. I think I prefer the purist version; the Melford version adds very little, and the video quality is markedly worse.

The edit mostly changes the structure of the back half of the movie, greatly improving the pacing and coherence. (If anybody watching the original can tell me how many days are supposed to pass in the movie, I'd be surprised!) There are still two strange hiccups in the chronology and staging, things that made me ask questions -- does Dracula visit Mina twice in one night? And why are Van Helsing and Harker standing at the entrance to Carfax Abbey, when they see Renfield enter it? These hiccups are present in the original, though, so no marks against it.

There's one distracting edit I would love to see cleaned up: at 36:52, the screen is black for a little too long and I think the end of Van Helsing's line is cut off.

This is my preferred version of the film. I would rather watch this than the original.
