Synopsis:
This is the 480p standard definition edition of my Dune edit, completed in July 2012. It has since been rebuilt in 1080p high definition - that Special 1080 Edition was released in July 2022 and is detailed here: https://ifdb.fanedit.org/dune-1984-the-alternative-edition-redux-special-1080p-edition/
This fanedit has twice been officially released on Blu-ray as the ‘Spicediver Cut’ by Koch Films Germany (now Plaion Pictures):
1. On the Dune Ultimate Edition box set in 2022 (standard definition edition upscaled to 720p)
2. On the Dune Ultimate Edition box set reissued in 2024 (contains the Special 1080p Edition).
A film that’s been admired, hated and puzzled-over in fairly equal amounts, writer/director David Lynch’s ambitious 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel gets an extensive fanediting treatment in Dune The Alternative Edition Redux. This is my third and final cut of an edit I first released in 2008 and again in 2009. As previously, it draws on the heavily cut Theatrical Version, the controversial Extended “TV” Version and a selection of Deleted Scenes and soundtrack cues.

Intention:
The Redux cut is, firstly, an opportunity for me to apply the additional skills I’ve learnt since this fanedit’s original release. Technical improvements include cleaning up dirty footage and completing the blue eyes FX, while creative changes include two new “filmbooks”, a new 4-part structure to the film, and a new ending that’s truer to the remarkable world that Frank Herbert created.
Secondly, Redux has allowed me to respond to some of the criticisms made by fans over the years and make further changes that I think improve the storytelling and presentation. The restoration of Princess Irulan as the film’s narrator is one such example.
For me it’s been a long, exciting and sometimes exhausting journey. I’d particularly like to thank the fanediting community. Without such avenues to promote my work and without the generous input and feedback of enthusiastic members, the Dune movie as I have moulded it simply wouldn’t exist.
David Lynch himself refuses to revisit the film, despite admitting that “there’s something wrong with that movie” and complaining that he never had final cut. So it’s left to us fans to tinker and reshape this curious piece of sc-fi cinema; trying to minimise its many flaws, amplify its many strengths and – in my case – trying to add something new as well.
I hope you enjoy the trip.

Cuts and Additions:
ADDITIONS
* Most scenes and footage unique to the Extended Edition have been used.
* The following additional Deleted Scenes have been included:
- The Fremen Reverend Mother’s original opening to the film
- An extension of Fremen housekeeper Mapes testing Jessica
- Thufir and Leto discussing the Fremen’s prophecy about Paul
- An extension of Paul’s talk with Jessica after his waking dream
- The aftermath of Paul defeating Jamis in the knife fight
- The Fremen priest telling Paul he may be the fulfilment of their prophecy
- A shot of Jessica in labour with Alia
- A closeup shot of Fremen warriors shouting “long live the fighters!”
- Thufir Howat’s redemption and death
- Paul taking Princess Irulan as his wife.
* The film has been divided into four 'Books', each with a title frame preceded by a quote from various Dune novels. The original novel by Frank Herbert was divided into 3 books. This fanedit includes these and adds a 4th book to accommodate the structure of the film. The titles are: Book I: The Great Houses; Book II: Dune; Book III: Muad’dib; Book IV: The Prophet.
* A new 'filmbook' has been created about the history of the universe and the Great Revolt against artificial intelligence, and is seen being read by Paul Atreides during the film. It has been built with material from the Extended Edition’s prologue and is designed to match the look and feel of the existing filmbook that appears early in the movie.
ALTERATIONS
* Some scenes from both the Theatrical and Extended Editions have been moved around and relocated to improve the narrative, including changes to accommodate the fanedit’s new 4-part structure.
* A new opening features Princess Irulan’s narration, a Fremen ceremony and customised Dune Titles. The Fremen ceremony audio now has the intended reverb added, and the chanted answers to the Reverend Mother are now the sound of a whole crowd responding instead of a single placemarker voice.
* A new, simpler ending has been created, modelled on an earlier draft script, where Paul does not magically make rain fall on Arrakis. The idea of rain on Arrakis is a narrative and ecological absurdity in the world that Frank Herbert created.
* Princess Irulan is the narrator. The Alternative Edition Redux uses most elements of her narration from the Theatrical Edition, plus selected audio edits from her Deleted Scene.
* The male narrator including the painted prologue from the Extended Edition has been deleted, but parts of it have been reworked into a new filmbook about the history of the universe and The Great Revolt, read by Paul Atreides during the film.
* The overuse and/or inappropriate choice of music in some scenes from the Extended Edition has been addressed.
* The attack on House Atreides by the Harkonnen and the Emperor’s forces is confusingly shot and edited in places. This has now been re-edited and some shots flipped around, to a give better sense of direction and a better sense of the ebb and flow of battle.
* Because the Fremen Reverend Mother’s prophecy now opens the film, it’s appearance in the official versions of the Dune – when House Atreides lands on Arrakis – would be an exact repeat of an earlier shot. So the Trip To Arrakis sequence has now been remixed so that only desert landscapes are used for the visuals, while the prophecy is still heard intoned on the soundtrack.
* The Deleted Scene where Thufir speaks to Leto about the Fremen prophecy now opens with an atmospheric long shot of Arakeen and the castle keep. This shot has been changed to make it set at dusk and the 2nd moon rising over the shield wall has been added.
* An new closeup of Princess Irulan – and some altered footage – has been included in the scene where Paul surveys the prisoners after his defeat of the Emperor.
DELETIONS
* Approximately 50% of internal dialogue has been removed from the audio track and, where necessary, the video has been recut. I believe it was a colossal mistake to use this narrative device so often. In the translation from book to film some of it is effective, but much more was added in the final stages of post-production and is often unnecessary. Essential elements like The Litany Against Fear have been left intact.
* Deleted the incongruous St Francis Prayer section from Princess Irulan’s final narration, in order to move the story away from a simplistic and forced happy ending: “Where there was war, Muad’dib would bring peace; where there was hatred Muad’dib would bring love.”
* Reduced Paul’s awkward forced laughter in two shots to a more believable smile.
* Deleted some cheesy closeups of the actors when riding the sandworms.
* Deleted Chani’s cheesy line when Paul wakes from a dream: “You were calling my name. It frightened me.”
* Deleted Beast Rabban’s diabolical laughter when the Baron hands him charge of Arrakis. Also deleted the shot of him kicking over the dwarf. These villains are already cartoonish enough.
* Deleted or fixed some bad rear projection FX shots during Paul and Jessica’s pursuit by the sandworm. This action scene as also been tightened to increase the sense of danger.
* The climax of Paul and Feyd’s knife fight has been tightened to make it more tense and more plausible.
TECHNICAL FIXES
* Completed the blue spice eyes FX on human characters where this effect was missing in the Extended Edition and in some Deleted Scenes.
* Also added blue spice eyes FX to the 3rd stage Guild navigators in two scenes, in line with the description of the navigators in Frank Herbert’s books.
* Colour-corrected all footage unique to the Extended Edition to remove a pronounced green tint and other problems.
* Fixed the filmbook read by Paul in the opening scene on Caladan because many images are stretched out in the wrong aspect ratio. These shots have now been corrected and the images rebuilt.
* Fixed the infamous editing mistakes, bad audio joins and censorship in footage that was used from the Extended Edition.
* Digitally cleaned and restored the lower resolution Deleted Scenes to improve the image quality. Also cleaned up audio where possible.
* The audio track from the Theatrical Edition is used wherever possible due to its superior quality.
* Most scenes and footage unique to the Extended Edition have been used.
* The following additional Deleted Scenes have been included:

I unequivocally love this film in the two hour version and think it works less well in the extended/TV cut, plus I've watched extended fanedits before. This time I watched spicediver's 2012 'Dune: The Alternative Edition Redux' fanedit, which runs for about 3-hours. spicediver skillfully integrates the deleted footage in a way that feels true to the style and tone established in the shorter cut. I was impressed by the way he removed the aforementioned rain sequence without detracting from the climactic swell of the music and visuals. There were a couple of minutes during the final battle where the audio editing sounded a bit choppy but otherwise it was all seamless. As with other extended versions, it does suffer from unbalancing the narrative and characters. Because the bulk of the additional material focuses on Paul and/or the first half, the 2nd half of the film seems increasingly rushed and the other characters get lost somewhat. I wish it was in HD (as much as possible) but it's still a wonderful way to watch the film. I think I'll be torn from now on when I need to decide which version to watch. Thanks spicediver!

I have a different take than most other reviewers. For one, I actually really enjoyed the normal DVD version of Dune! Yes, I'm the one.
I don't find the film particularly harder to understand than a film like Memento or Inception or The Fountain. You need to be attentive, and a rewatch wouldn't hurt. But it's not nearly as impenetrable as the novels. Therefore, I wasn't really looking for anything to simplify the narrative in this fanedit. For me, this was simply a chance to get more of a good thing! I wanted all the extra footage from the other versions.
Unfortunately, this footage is a mess, with very inconsistent quality and a few hard-to-incorporate edits. Despite spicediver's work on the effects, it is just really very jarring whenever the footage switches. It took me right out of the film every time.
In as much as some of the added scenes expand and deepen the world of Dune, many of them really do nothing but slow down the narrative. I actually have to agree with many of the decisions of the original studio. Putting these scenes back in makes you very aware of the runtime, and adds little to the story. Dune is already a long, epic film without them. I think a few could be added back in, IF the visual/audio quality wasn't distracting.
Overall, many of the small tweaks in this edit are appreciated. But the length and structure now feels bloated to me, and the added scenes are a mixed bag. I still prefer the previous version, personally, though I'm sure completists and fans of the novel may like this version better.

Better story development than any other version. Unfortunately some footage has quite bad picture quality, but the improved narrative justifies including it.
Thank you for this tremendous effort.

"A film that’s been admired, hated and puzzled-over in fairly equal amounts ... "
How about, all the above?
Stunning set design and ridiculous costumes. What are the Sardaukar, firefighters?
Gorgeous Brian Eno theme - then Toto.
Exposition that advances the plot, dialogue that booms bombastic.
Top tier actors driven by madman Lynch to ham it up.
I loved Dune - I hated Dune.
Spicediver did an outstanding job in focusing the narrative thrust of the movie.
I appreciate how he organized the structure into four books.
Video editing was fine. When deleted footage was used, it was noticeable. Sharp to grainy. Yet the result was in keeping with his intended edit.
Audio, once or twice I caught some dialogue that did not match mouths. More often than not, there was a crop or he inserted audio when character backs were turned. Again, this was meant to enhance pacing or narrative, so I don't want to nitpick.
I really enjoyed this edit, which eclipses my other copies, including the miniseries.

This is the all-time no contest king of fanedits. Bar none. Spicediver is a genuine talent. The dedication and love of the original is apparent here. Can’t say enough positive things about this. It’s my definitive version of the movie. Always recommend it to friends. Go watch it!!

This is my favorite version of Dune (not yet counting the 2023 movie). I might change up to for HD Special Edition.
I have considered this my preferred definitive version of Dune over all previous attempts. I consider this the MUST HAVE Dune movie.
It is made to be in line with the book, imperfections minimized.

Dune (1984) is my favorite theatrically released Dune movie, and is my "hard" sci-fi movies ever. I saw it when I was 12 and loved it BUT I did find some parts somewhat confusing. Concepts I didn't "get" I just shrugged off and just focused on the plot elements which I understood.
This edit fills in the gaps. The artistic and narrative choices that SpiceDiver has made really helps the viewer understand some of the backstory. The original theatrical release was 137 minutes.. This version adds a whopping 41 minutes to the runtime and in my humble opinion, the film is so much better for it. Whole scenes that were cut have been reinserted and they really do help explain to the viewer, especially those who haven't read the book(s), why what we are seeing is happening.
What hurts the edit is the fact that some of the footage that has been inserted is some very rough cuts, and that is putting it nicely. I commend the editor for doing the best they could with what they had to work with, and those scenes do add a lot, but I feel a lot of viewers may be a bit "put off" by the dramatic drop in video fidelity. I am personally ok with it, but I'm a bit of an extended/deleted scene junky, which makes me very biased.
This is the only version of Dune (1984) I watch. I couldn't imagine watching the theatrical cut now. I know opinions of the original Dune are very polarized and if you didn't like it to begin with, this will not change your opinion. If you loved, liked, or are on the fence about this movie than you should watch it. Fans will really enjoy this and fence-sitters may, after watching the additional footage, achieve a better understanding of Lynch's Dune, making a so-so movie for them into a film they "get" and enjoy.

This is easily the best version of the film, Spicediver's edit ist masterfully done. It exceeds previous cuts of this film as well as the '21 film. The ending gave me chills and is by far better than the original.
