I've been a fan of Lynch's Dune my whole life. I can remember seeing commercials for it when it was first released and being totally taken with the visuals. I was too young to see it in theatres sadly, but a few years later I finally saw it on video. A strange, wonderful, creepy and somehow unbalanced film. Years after I first saw the film I finally read the book and came to understand how far the film had diverged from the source material.

SpiceDiver's edit is nothing short of revelatory. The new book structure, the incorporation of extended and deleted scenes bring the film more in line with the book. I loved it. As a fan of both the original film and the novel I have no hesitation in saying that that this is now my definitive version of the film. SpiceDiver has turned Dune from a cinematic oddity and turned it into a film worthy to carry the title Dune.

I first saw the Lynch version of "Dune", ten years ago... and frigging hated it. There are parts of it, that no re-edit can fix -- the often hideous art direction, questionable acting choices, and just plain cheap-looking effects. But this brilliant re-edit does fix some of the worst problems, namely the awkward pacing, the great disservice of the Fremen (particularly in the theatrical cut), and the annoying as hell narration for every lingering thought.

The final movie -- and yes, I do call this the definitive cut of the Lynch film -- doesn't turn a turd into a masterpiece, but it does make the absolute best of the filmed material. Great work.

This is gonna be my ULTIMATE Lynch's Dune edition, unless Lynch ever makes his rumoured 4h plus director's cut (which I doubt). The theatrical release is cryptic for anyone who hasn't read the novel; the new mini-series has quite of the book but lacks a soul; Paramount dropped any project for a new Dune merchandise: what to do? Thank you then for this epic work: Lynch's visually inspired universe (sometimes borrowed from Jodorowsky's failed project, and his art designers Moebius and H.R. Giger) finally makes sense as a tale (not that far from Herbert's at all, though it's a pity that Baron Harkonnen was made that stupid). In the end, a nice adaptation of a sci-fi classic. Surely a must have.
Technically, a remarkable effort, especially if you consider that the deleted scenes (from both theatrical and TV extended editions) do have that horrible quality, which here is treated as much as possible. Same for little edits such as added blue eyes, nearly identical to Lynch's.

The editing here is top notch... but the key element here is the narrative, as every decision has been given every thought. Every step taken has been in the right direction. And Dune, at last, is the film it should have been.

Congratulations for one of the best fanedits I've seen. Ever.

Thanks juan-man for the review and positive comments. For me, more than half of this project was about narrative decisions: worrying over them, sleeping on them, mulling over single decisions for weeks or months. And of course posting clips and questions to the community to test some of those decisions. It feels great to hear that you understood the effort and so enjoyed the finished result. :)
