I’ve now watched through Evangelion (series plus EoE) twice, the first time was a few years ago (with the original Japanese and subs) and the second over the past few months (ADV English) with this edit to conclude the story.
While still a bit more demanding of one’s attention than your average film, I feel this amalgamation of the internal and external plot lines works really well in keeping you engaged in both stories as they drive towards the same end point together rather than having to take the same trip twice. I once tried to articulate to a friend what it was like to watch EoE and could only bring up 1982’s The Wall as something else that made me feel the same way, this time I’d add The Last Battle (last book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, brought to my mind having reedited the film trilogy) and (aptly for Q2) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, with the layers of reality and plots of imminent endings.
I can only remember one part from the original material that’s missing, can’t see a way to work it in without a drastic mood whiplash so that is easily forgiven. Sometimes I felt that the audio levels were a touch off-balance (some scenes louder than I expected, whether original to the source or not I don’t know) and there was one section where I think the cropping to a different aspect ratio is a bit distracting (compositions too tight). The editing itself though was excellent, noticed no (unintentionally) jarring cuts either audibly or visually.
If one is a fan of the original I can definitely recommend it, if you are unfamiliar with the series this would be hard to follow but still quite capable of leaving an impact. Thanks Q2 for making this!
