Introduction

I saw Deep Impact when I was 8 years old, I thought it was great! A little boring (I was 8) but I thought it was good. I later watched Armageddon... eh, it was okay. What can I say, it was Michael Bay. I rewatched Deep Impact... man it was good. But, what if it had a little flare...? And so I decided to combine 1998's Deep Impact and Armageddon. This edit cuts out the crew out of Deep Impact and replaces them with the story of Armageddon. So, we get a movie with about 50% Deep Impact, and 50% Armageddon. To keep a Decent runtime, a bit of Deep Impact was cut, and a LOT of Armageddon was cut.

Intention

My biggest goal was to - of course - combine 1998's Armageddon and Deep Impact into one coherent movie. I aim to make Armageddon less goofy and irreverent, though also allowing it humor and some stupid stuff. Some time dumb fun is fine, just as long it doesn't hurt the overall story. So I tried to minimize the dumb fun to an amount that doesn't weigh down the rest of the movie. Honestly, I prefer Deep Impact, and at first I tried to find a way to make the whole movie that sort of tone; but when you're working with Armageddon... yeah I dropped that ball pretty quick.

The Armageddon part is to serve as what's going on in space to stop the asteroid, whereas Deep Impact is to serve as the earth side to the story; what the government is doing; how people are reacting - and we get to see this on a personal level with Deep Impact. Overall, I wanted this edit to highlight the personal and more dramatic aspects of these movies, while of course still having some occasional levity and action.

Another important thing I tried my best to do was to have them feel like their happening at the same time. Having tricks such as: something bad happens on the asteroid in Armageddon, and people in Deep Impact react to it. Simple things such as the President Morgan Freeman announcing the asteroids and then the following scene is the Armageddon scene where Billy Bob Thornton says that "now the whole world knows" to Bruce Willis.

These movies are about an asteroid that is about to hit earth, and my edit is just telling that same story from two point of views that coexist, and influence each other every now and then.

Runtime

Original (Two movies combined): 275 minutes, or 4hrs 35min

My edit runs at: 144 minutes, or 2hrs 24min

I cut: 131 minutes, or 2hrs 11min

I'll keep this thread updated as I complete this project.

I was most assuredly in the Deep Impact camp in '98. Just as Cayce Pollard in Gibson's Pattern Recognition is repulsed by all things Hilfiger, I too was repulsed by all things Michael Bay at the time. Maybe still. Haven't tested those waters in a while.

If you can keep the heart of Deep Impact and marry it to some of the adrenaline of the other, I can see how it might work...Looking forward to more info!

Man, I am 100% in that same boat. I prefer Deep Impact, but thought it would be kinda cool if it had some fast-paced counterpart like Armageddon to it. I made a "first draft" version of this, and it worked. I feel like it had a bit too much Bay to it, so this version will hopefully be toned down a bit.

When Michael Bay gets up in the morning he brushes his teeth with a huge explosion followed by breakfast consisting of a huge explosion. Guess what’s for lunch.

Deep Impact…..Armageddon…..

Have we forgotten the other asteroid flick from that time? Asteroid starring Michael Biehn!

I just want to say that it's nice seeing someone reference Pattern Recognition in the wild. It's the only William Gibson book I've been able to finish, and probably the first book I read without knowing anything about it beforehand.

Anywho, I believe there was an old edit that had the same idea. If you're able to track it down, it might provide some inspiration, and it'd be interesting to see how the two edits compare.

I need to see this edit lol. I must.

This is still being worked on, but things have gotten in the way, so this fanedit has been delayed to a lot later than I originally planned. I thought it'd be done by now, but nope.

So I finished this... I didn't like it. I made tweak after tweak after tweak for a gosh dang wile, and I still didn't like it. So I decided to re-edit it entirely. I will say the edit I made wasn't too bad, and I think I can really see where this edit can and can't go now. Honestly most of the stuff I didn't like was the fact that it felt like Armageddon (no matter what I did) was taking over the spotlight rather than sharing or even being the side-story. I'm a bigger fan of Deep Impact and would prefer it to at least be on the same level as Armageddon. Michael Bay is just some director I guess. Anyways, just wanted to say I'm still working on this, and usually I could've finished this within like a week or two when I have free time, but I just didn't like the cut enough to satisfy me, and I'm recutting it.

Here's the first teaser trailer to show that yeah, I'm releasing this soon.

And some more artwork
