Beer Appreciation Thread

During the summer I typically have my beers at fridge temperature, but I will wait for the darker ones to warm up before drinking. When it's winter, I keep my darker beers in a cupboard and they stay at a nice, cool temperature that's just perfect.

Back in my insane, super snobby, obsessive days, I had a sort of make shift fridge that I put together for the summer. I essentially insulated a cupboard and lined it with freezer blocks which I would swap out every now and again. I had a thermometer in there and had worked out the right amount of freezer blocks to keep the beers at prime temperature. I knew it wouldn't be something I could keep up, but back then I had the time to not care and try silly things.
 
^ You did all that while drunk? Impressive.
 
And whatever happened to Snow Plow Milk Stout?  That was fun & tasty winter beer but I haven't seen it for the last two winters, and I did look around.  What's up Widmer Brothers?  I do not like your Brrr Hoppy Red, so don't even.

'Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier'

From a "The World's Oldest Brewery' in Bavaria. They claim to have been going for 20-years short of a millennium (cough bullsh*t) or a long old time anyway. A slightly cloudy wheat beer, very refreshing. Only one shop in my area has it but it's worth the trip to stock up because I can't imagine wanting to drink anything else (at least when I'm not in the mood for a darker/stronger ale/porter/stout etc).
 
^^ I had that a while back and really liked it. My local shop used to stock it; was super disappointed when they stopped.
 
I’m just not a fan of wheat beers, but I like the Helles, Pils, and Festbier from Weihenstephaner. Currently I’m drinking these most regularly:

After lots of appointments with specialists in the last year to figure out some severe abdominal issues (I should also post this in the GDISM thread), it turns out that gluten intolerance is a big part of my recent health problems. For a vegetarian who LOVES bread, beer, and all things grain, this has been pretty depressing. I will occasionally sneak one of my favorite beers, but my guts quickly remind me that I'm an asshole for ignoring the facts.

Thankfully, distilling is a thing, and I've been enjoying whiskies and gins more recently. But, I often crave a good IPA. So far, the gluten-free beers I've sampled have ranged from mildly approximating actual beer (Stone Delicious IPA; tasty but should be noted that this is gluten "reduced." My farts can confirm) to wholly disgusting (New Belgium Glutiny Pale Ale; holy f*ck, what even is this? sock sweat?). I'll keep trying these bastardizations, but I fear I am stuck with distilled spirits.
 
^^ Super sorry to hear that, Throw. Hope you're doing OK, and that you manage to find the Holy Grail of gluten free beer.

I'm British and I'm very partial to a beer. Brewdog consistently produce great products (my favourite being Elvis Juice which is a lovely grapefruit IPA) including a gluten free IPA which my have a gluten intolerant friend swears by.

cool, thanks Malthus! I'll check that out. BrewDog is pretty easily found where I live in the US.

One note though, that is an American Pale Ale, not an IPA. APAs are lighter bodied, less hop presence, and generally less alcohol as well.

I feel you. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of good options. I think things have improved but it’s still a huge drop off in quality from regular beer to gluten free. I’d avoid anything that uses sorghum. Stone Delicious is the best I’ve had, but as you note is gluten reduced. True Celiacs I’ve known can’t drink it.
 
You could always get into to Cider instead (which is naturally Gluten free) although I'm not sure if it's a thing in the US (it goes by the name "hard Cider" right? "Cider" is just apple juice). It also has the advantage over beer that it can be enjoyed with ice, room temp and mulled. Ciders go all the way from fizzy pale sweet ones, to still strong sour traditional ones.
