Hi folks

What if I take an overlong 153 min movie, cut it to 102 minutes and then remove all the music?

What if I then do two versions each with a different score?

A lot of score replacement projects tend to either randomly use music from various composers, or will focus on one composer sourcing music from multiple films that they have worked on.

I propose to take two scores from two very different composers and then adhering to the discipline used by composes for film music composition, adhere to those principals as if the music had been composed for this movie.

What does this mean?

It means that I will use the themes and Leimotifs in a consistent manner both for characters and situations.

It also means that these two versions will feel VERY different from each other and of course different from the original but visually and runtime wise they will be identical in every other respect.

The workprint has now long been prepared waiting for me and I’m in the process of finalising the first version for which I will release a trailer as soon as it is completed.

Which movie am I using?

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS

WHICH COMPOSERS WILL I BE USING?
  • ELMER BERNSTEIN
  • ENNIO MORRICONE.
The Morricone score is from a lesser known non-western film and so the music will be fresh to most.
The Elmer Bernstein score, well I’ll let the trailer reveal that to you in a few days time.

UPDATE

I'm hoping to submit the ffirst version using Elmer Bernstein's GREAT ESCAPE score this week.

A trilaer will follow today or tomorrow .

Some details.
  • All but 10 secs of the original music have been removed.
  • Aproximately 60 mins of the 102 mins runtime is scored.
  • 31 minutes from the 91 minutes of available score were NOT used, either due to excessive repetion, or just not useable.
  • No exact piece of music is used more than once (except 2 stings, that were doubled in length for dramatic purposes).
  • All but 6 cues from the EXPANDED GREAT ESCAPE 2 CD set were used, but not all the music in those cues. Many were extensively reworked to fir the visuals and vice versa.
  • 51 minutes of the original movie have been removed
  • 2 minutes added
  • Extensive full audio rebuild for many scenes
  • Leimotifs, thems and melodies from the new score have been applied consistently to situations, characters and drama....a few have been used to either misdirect the viewer or to inject melodic irony.
  • The THEME from THE GREAT ESCAPE, appears in many forms and stlyes on the original score; some are as expected, but the theme was also orchestrated dramatically, melancholy-like, tense and even a few cues which have dissonate orchestrations...these have been used to good effect.
  • The 20 min intro with LANDA now runs 10 mins.
  • LANDA scenes run for the most part UNSCORED (per the original), with a few stings or minor underscoring added where it felt appropriate.
  • Some scenes are in black and white, and adjuested for high contrast where needed.
  • Some scenes that were not previously scored, now are.
  • Hitler's Rant is gone
  • The Zoeller romance is gone
  • Over exposition is gone
  • The game in the tavern, is gone.
  • The climax is restructured
  • Over 80 sound FX were used throughout.
  • New opening and end credits have been created.
  • A new flashback has been added (which was used in The Tarantino Tales Episode 7, but was originally created for THIS edit).
The second version of this edit....
(MORRICONE's BASTERDS)
... will use Ennio Morricone's score from "Violent City"/"Citta Violenta" (1970) starring Charles Bronson and Telly Savalas; the visuals of THAT second version will be IDENTICAL to this one, so the score may need more tweaking. The whole point here is to have two identical workprints, then score them differently.

That score ( "Violent City") is wildly different than The Great Escape. It is not known by many who have not seen the film and it contains a wide variety of cues and styles, which lend themselves to creating a very different feeling movie than either the original or this version, BERNSEIN's BASTERDS.

I have already analysed the score and allocated where the music will be placed and the edits and remixes I need to perform to make that score work. There may be changes to that if the music does not deliver as expected (that occured on this first version, so cues were re-ordered or not used).

A non-exhaustive change list will follow for this version after I complete the trailer.

UPDATE

Thanks to the EVER vigilant and sharp eyed @ParanoidAndroid , VERSION 15 D will be available tomorrow containing the following changes:

0:31:42 Shosanna's head position jumps between cuts so the shot has been moved and the framing and subtitles redone to accomodate the continuity
0:54:56 Subtitle Text jumps at the cut corrected
0:55:00 Should be "Not I" instead of "Nor I"?
1:40:00 "Bernstein", currently "Berstein"
1:40:09 Text alignment credit corrected
1:40:27 Should be "Alan Smithee", no second "I"

@ParanoidAndroid is SOOOO eagle eyed that 13 more subtitling issues were spotted BUT are burnt into the original, so these shall remain ...for now.
THANKS as always to you CHIEF!

....I have also added an additional music cue....

Such a change is VERY unusual for me to make given the edit was completed...nevertheless, I felt that the cue added HAD to go in. In The Great Escape, there is a moment when two escapees (trying to avoid spoilers" are discovered due to a basic slip up...that music has been added to this edit at a similar point....to emulate that scene in the Great Escape, when a certain moment occurs...

Apologies to those that already have the edit....If anyone wants to know precise when the cue is added, please DM me...

The cue is called "At The Train Station", and was not used in any other part of the edit...

UPDATE:
thanks to TRUSTED REVIEWER and the bionic vision of @bionicbob , a tiny protagonist geography continuity issue at the restaurant was flagged. I am not only grateful for this, but I have also managed to fix it despite the fact that there is little to play with and there are a few jump cuts in there already which truncate movements for a stylistic staccato entry, but this now works....

A revised file will be placed in the same folder that viewers already have.

Thanks @bionicbob
