DETERMINED - A Minority Report Fanedit

I have not seen this movie in a long enough time to remember specific details so I will join the chorus in being very interested in altering the story.

We will all find out soon enough if your changes work. Good luck and best wishes.

After watching it, I believe this is a great take on the story.

The conspiracy and the system being manipulated from within are gone.
The focus is on the main character and what he does after receiving the “prediction”, along with the philosophical questions that arise from it. Because of this determinism vs. free will debate, the title “Determined” is pretty ingenious.

The original film’s happy ending made no sense. The world is dark, and future technology is making it darker, so the ending was incongruent with such a grim world and the story being told. The new ending, however, makes sense. It has bits of Black Mirror and of Inception in it and really works.

Thanks to @GarStazi 's feedback, I've fixed a small continuity error in the edit. I'll have to re-encode and re-compress it, so when it goes live on Monday it will still have that issue for a bit while I wait for handbrake to do it's thing. V2 will probably be available on Monday or Tuesday afternoon if you want to wait for that.

Edit: turns out I got V2 up today, so it should be good to go as soon as it's approved.

Great title, btw. I love the double meaning for "Determined".
Thanks! I'm pretty proud of myself for that one.

Thanks to all who've given feedback on this edit so far.
I've created a V3 based on the criticisms I've recieved:

  • There was an awkward audio edit near the start of the film that I was hoping to pass of as a musical sting, but it was noticed by a few viewers. I've muted that part and replaced it with music from the soundtrack.
  • I've added the scene with the eyeless drug dealer back in in full. I originally cut this because it seemed a little weird and out of place, but I've put it back in to add context to the scene with Peter Stormare, the idea being that the drug dealer hooked Jon up with the contact.
  • After Jon sees the premonition of his crime, Wally sees it and says he'll give Jon a two minute headstart before pressing the alarm. I initially cut this because I don't like the line, but reviewers were confused by the lack of confrontation, so I put it back in.
  • There's a continuity error towards the end of the film. Jon is arrested in an environment we've never seen before, with no explanation of how he got there. I've left this in because I don't see a way around it. Hopefully it will go unnoticed by most viewers, or they will assume that it's another part of the hotel or they were just arrested somewhere else.
  • I originally left in the shot of the precogs in their chateau, mainly because it was part of the credits, but reviewers were confused about what the relevance of that shot was to the ending, so I've removed it. I've taken @JasonFlippy 's suggestion of rolling the credits over Jon's face. I've kept the shot of Jon with his pregnant wife, though, because I think it adds to the tragedy.

I'm also trying to get a higher quality encode on this version (handbrake is my nemisis).
I'm compressing it now, and it should be avalible tomorrow morning.
If you want to upgrade your version, it will be on the same link as V2.

I'll post again when it's up.

I didn't pick up on this. Doesn't it happen directly after the shooting? I think I just assumed it was the same room.

It's hard to notice if you don't recognise it from the original, but he's actually arrested at his wife's house. If you look closely you can see that the shape of the room and the furniture don't match the hotel, but luckily it's just a couple of quick close-ups.

Out of curiosity, what source did you use as the basis for your edit? I ask because amazon recently made this available in 4K SDR (albeit this is probably an upscale).

@futon88 has noticed a few new issues in V3. I missed them because I only proof watched the parts I'd changed. Lessons learned.

I'll be putting a V4 up soon. If you have V3, please wait until the next version is ready.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks to Futon's excellent feedback, I was able to fix a few mistakes that were actually present in V2.

  • I've changed the warning and FE logo at the beginning to the dark versions so they don't need to be stretched anymore.
  • I've done a better job fading out the music I added to mask the awkward cut in V3
  • There was a moment in the original movie where it seems like two takes were filmed for the women on the screen serving as a witness to say "standing by". They cut from the close-up to the wide, you can see her lips moving when she says the line, but it isnt dubbed. Ive cut that moment out.
  • When Jon is climbing the fire escape a line that I meant to cut is actually still there if you listen closely. I've removed it properly now.
  • Because a lot of the changes I made in V3 involved dragging the whole timeline around, I accidentally left in a 6 second black screen. Now back to normal.
  • When the police stormed the simulator den there was an awkward cut that I was aware of, but wasnt sure if it would bother people. Ive cheated a little to make the audio lead-in longer. Hopefully it works better now.
  • And I've fixed the typo in the end credits.

I'm encoding again now. Might be a while since I'm trying again to improve the video quality, but I'll let you know.
