Star Trek AXANAR

CBS whistling while running its baton along the prison bars.

So would something such as Star Trek Renegades be considered a fan film?
Would happens to the second installment, "Requiem"?
And the pilot, would that have to be destroyed?

Yes, Renegades is indeed classified as a Fan Film.

In someways, Renegades, along with Axanar, has to share responsible for this mess.   Both drew too much attention to themselves and went overboard promoting their productions as "professional", when neither had any rights to the IP.  Axanar is by far the biggest offender, in fact, Alex Peters actions seem almost criminal.  I think the Renegades team had its heart in the right place but made some critical missteps in their promotion and fund raising.  But at least they actually produced a few hours of entertainment and stayed true to their word.  Unlike Axanar....

New guidelines for Trek fan films. Oh yeah, this is bad news.

http://www.startrek.com/fan-films

I was just thinking out loud.... and please correct me if I am misremembering.....  but didn't Lucas Film attempt something similar back in the late 90s or early 2000s?  They tried to get control over all the SW fan films, going so far as to create an "official" contest but handicapping film makers by saying fan films could only be parodies or something but no direct serious mythology tie-ins?  Though I think as time went on, they became more and more relaxed in trying to enforce control over the fan film community?   There are some pretty amazing SW fan films out there, and as far as I know, I don't think any of them have been sued or shut down?   Though, none attempted to make a profit off the IP either as far as I know....?

And again,  these are described as guidelines... not rules.   No where does it say CBS/Paramount will actually sue you if you do not follow the guidelines.   Not that I would want to be the amateur film maker to test them....

I doubt that anyone would get sued for simply uploading a fan film to YouTube without hyping its production beforehand or engaging in any kind of crowdfunding. There are tons of Trek clip videos around YouTube, after all, so it's not as though CBS is zealously going after every piece of unauthorized video/IP.

It's one thing to work on something quietly and privately, then upload it and say "oi, here's a fan film that exists; enjoy!" It's another thing, however, to hype announcements, solicit crowdfunds (even Patreon), and blur the lines of amateur/professional with main Trek cast actors.

And again, fan filmmakers can always take a Third Option of doing their own, off-brand thing. Y'know... exploring strange new worlds and all that.   :P

Well, you jest, but to me, that's exactly what these fan film takes on the TOS characters feels like. :-/

^ me too! I just cannot take them seriously at all. It reminds me of the kids from Galaxy Quest.

BREAKING NEWS!

CBS Paramount have settled the Axanar lawsuit out of court.
Specific details still to come, but as of now it sounds like Alex Peters will be allowed to continued to make his project except in a very different format.... two 15 minutes shorts... as per the already released Guidelines.  Though rumours continue to swirl Peters has spent/invested all the fan raised money on himself and his studio start up, so how he will ever finish the project now remains to be seen.

Robert Meyer Burnett's side of the story....

Starts to get really juicy around the 25 minute mark....

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4o_w6n-R3o[/video]

***Burnett says he has over 90 minutes of footage that Peters has been sitting on and could have released in the last two years.  Burnett says he will release all the footage to the public on New Years Day!!!

Very interesting.

I've known for quite a while now that Alec Peters is a jerk, and in all likelihood an outright fraud. He tries to play the victim, but the reality is that he brought the wrath of CBS/Paramount on himself through his misconduct, then threw other fan film creators under the bus. The new fan film guidelines are his fault, not that of CBS. He essentially forced their hand.

There's way too much to get into here, but in a nutshell, he was using money from fan donations to build a permanent studio that he would eventually use to make money. This is why he kept stalling and asking for more and more money. In doing so, he was not only scamming the fans, but also breaking the first commandment of fan films: thou shalt not make a financial profit from a fan film. He thought that since he was doing it in such a sneaky way, he could fly under the radar, but CBS was too smart to fall for it.

He was also paying himself a hefty salary from donation money (even going to expensive restaurants). And when you add in the fact that he took every possible opportunity to bad-mouth CBS/Paramount, J.J. Abrams, etc, and talk as if his fan film would more or less put official Star Trek out of business, there was simply no reality in which CBS/Paramount would let this joker keep scamming the fans and biting the hand of the corporation that had fed him and all other fan film creators by graciously allowing fan films to be made.

Here's a good source for concise, reliable information about the Axanar project, Peters and his misdeeds, and the lawsuit:

http://axamonitor.com/doku.php?id=start

And if you really want to dive deep into the available information, you could read the massive threads at The Trek BBS linked to below (just skimming through the first one alone will give you a pretty good idea of of the big picture, once the thread really gets going and the posts with the juicy details start to appear).

https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/cbs...oo-fanboys-gone-wild-too-many-hyphens.294122/

Sadly, there are still a large number of people who buy into Peters' victim narrative, despite all of the available evidence that proves it false.

It's weird how at 10:03 he says "As you can see from this great bridge that we've shown you many times" when he's clearly on a green screen. It's especially weird since they then cut to show pictures of a real set.

Weird doesn't even begin to describe Peters.  :P

A completely random and probably unrealistic thought....

If RMD continues to release the supposed entire 90 some minutes of finished FX shots and makes them all HD downloadable, could one use that footage for a fan edit?

Perhaps fan edit DISCOVERY, replacing their Kelvin style ships with the more canonical Axanar ones???
