Star Trek: Picard

^ I think introducing a whole new cast, Picard and Seven aside, was the right move. It should have felt and been plotted very differently than just "more TNG." But the first person who suggested that the inaugural season end with Picard thwarting an ancient threat poised to destroy the entire universe should have been very politely and firmly escorted off the premises... permanently.

After a mediocre first season,
and one of the worst ever written Trek second seasons,
PICARD Season Three returns on February 16th
for one last rodeo.
Please let it be glorious!!!!
QAPLA'!

^ Hissing insect-like baddies? Not very promising.

Thought experiment: which would you rather see - Picard S3, or a self-contained, one-season original show about a group of thieves that once pulled off a big Ocean's Eleven-style heist, but, having lived longer than they expected, must now must reunite as senior citizens to pull off one more One Last Job, starring the cast of Picard S3? Assume, for the purposes of this question, that the writing of Picard S3 would be at the level you expect it to be, and the writing quality of the heist show would be strictly average, neither poor nor great, and that both shows would get equal budgets.

Myself, I'd go with the heist show, easily. :p

^ Okay the penultimate villain reveal has really piqued my interest (just before the final villain reveal made me yawn a bit). It's picking up from a never resolved 1-episode plot thread from TNG that I'm sure fans have wondered about for years. Much better than rehashing big fan service stuff we don't need. Frakes is looking in great shape and old Worf looks very cool. I would love to watch the whole gang back together. This looks like it definitely has the potential to not be the worst thing ever made (y).

I still have my former misgivings about the tone and messaging e.g. the "Pacifism is so lame, amirite TNG fans?!" bit. ;)

As far as I’m concerned they can only go up from last season. If Season 3 is good I’ll just pretend it’s Season 2. If it’s bad then I’ll just pretend Picard never happened.

As someone who has only seen the Next Gen movies, and enjoyed Nemesis, should I check out Picard?

^ Nah. S1 isn't awful, but its season-long storyline feels written on the fly. If you like the TNG movies, but haven't seen much of TNG the show... you know what to do. ;)

Just finished Picard season 2. Here's my fresh "rip it apart and see if it still stands" review of Picard season 2. Very much like season 1, there are moments of classic Picard dialogue, but there is far too much ambiguous forced story telling has well. Most everyone had 2 to 3 hours of character development which was great, but that character development spent too much time setting itself up and making us see the faults of the characters in such an obvious and hit over the head way that it became annoying at times. The nostalgia was ok and worked narratively, but the acting felt cheap at times during these seens. I'll keep "traveling" forward with my review though.....at its core, Q and Picard's storyline was classic TNG and minus that horrid final cg shot, the ending worked incredibly well. Guinan was fun to see, but I struggled to connect with her younger self. I'm still confused about the Borg reveal and how nothing changed even though Jurati becomes the Borg queen. So, the Borg still do everything they do even with her as the main queen? Picard was still assimilated, Seven was still assimilated, Hugh was still assimilated and killed, countless civilizations are eradicated and assimilated, but now the Borg are the Guardians of the Gate who want to join the federation?.....that was a bit of a stretch. I don't know, maybe it took her 400 years to convince the collective, even though it took less than a few days to convince the Borg queen..... Beyond that, it was overly long, but a decent storyline.

I was asked by a friend if i fancied a Season 2 marathon...

My response?
"I'd rather watch Bewitched The Movie"
and that is pure poop

My understanding was that Jurati's new collective was not connected to the rest of the Borg in the Delta Quadrant, and that she did not do anything between 2024 and 2401 to maintain the timeline (following her direction in Episode 3 about butterflies), until it was time to fill her role in the time loop. My issue with the Borg story was that the show should have decided if it was a Borg time loop or a Q time loop, but they wanted to cram as much nostalgia as possible into the season so they just did both and then threw in a Soong for good measure.

My understanding ..............] for good measure.
..it was poo basically...flawed in so many ways that you could actually write a PhD on it....

I challenged myself to see if I could write a list of 100 things wrong with season 2...I thoughht it would cap out at 50....I'm on a 137, and counting...and that's without being nitpicky either...

Don't ask for it...I refuse to type it out......

STEAMINGLY BAD!

It was ok, just really bloated and long 🤷‍♂️
"He taunts me....HE TAUNTS ME"!
You want the list...HUH?

Well Wrath of Khan has ZERO things wrong with it (recycled VFX not wothstanding)..

"ok" would be if there were a few things wrong....come on folks, lets not turn into "excuseniks".
It's egregious drivvle ...Yes I said it!

No, I just think calling it poop is a bit much.

I think there are plenty of issues with the movie. The genesis project itself is a bit far fetched as it presents a global threat to any world. Kahn didn't know Chekov. Controlling a starship externally so easily is a bit far fetched. Mind controlling ear wigs, I could go on. It's a great movie, but it has its own warts.

Yes, you did say your own thoughts there You could try to write for paramount if you don't like it? 🤷‍♂️ I don't like Enterprise so I just don't watch it or give any attention or energy to it.

LOL

I’m going to vent… not at you.. or anyone… just at S02 Picard.

Hitchhikers Guide had the Babble Fish…and there are plenty of Earth bourne parasites that attack the brain, with various consequences ….
I recall schistosomes invade the human central nervous system with horrendous effects. We have fungi that cause hallucinations and leave people open to suggestion…so a parasite that does that via the ear, seemed credible to me in 82 (was half way thru a biology degree)….

Then there is the fish that swims up peoples ….I’ll stop there.

The Chekov loophole is well known and can easily be explained away…. We don’t know for a fact if he was not crew compliment…. Just Walter had not been cast yet…

And Genesis… well, we took 120yrs to do some similar shit to Earth…but it is sci fi….

My issue with Picard is that the dialogue is poor, the grammar a mess, aliens speaking in colloquial present English idiom all over the place, in your face preaching on issues that serve no real plot purpose, other than for the execs to say “oooo we know immigrants are treated badly”….(not making a political point folks).

Damn….I’ve been drawn on my list.

Picard’s mother “hanged” herself… not “hung” herself. And Patrick Stewart should have called that out… maybe he did…

Rios never inhaled from his unlit cigar, Seven can drive…., the border force dudes are cut out comic bad guys…, the jumps in narrative beggar belief, and we spend near on 3 episodes in the spooky house for a reveal that has no credible establishing or past hints in 7 years of TNG and a bunch of movies….

And that hug… THAT HUG!!!! Seriously folks… you could contrive a way to get away with that and earn… but it falls way short.

The bi relationship between Seven and Raffi is PC box ticking and they never really commit.. coz they are to frightened to offend hard core fans. I’m hard core… I want to be challenged…I want boundaries pushed, beliefs questioned, tropes thrown out…stretch me..:

Instead, the boundaries tested are patience and credibility… the beliefs questioned are “ if we move this along quick with lots of crash bang wallop, no one will care”…and the tropes….yup…lots and lots of lazy tropes rolled out to the point of being an insult imho…

They have thrown millions at this….and it’s not worthy of being in the shadow of Marco Inaros’ left ear. Sure …The Expanse has some issues….but you hang on every word……my point being, you need QC…. If a script or story idea is poor, chuck it out. Same writer screws up a few times…sack em.

If anyone would like a photo of the list… it’s at 147….

I love you all

Here is to S03

Big hug

Patrick Stewart wouldn't have had a problem with the grammar as it was correct.

Please know these are not said in an attacking way. Just responding to your post.

Yeah, I don't know about any of that.
The Chekov loophole is well known and can easily be explained away…. We don’t know for a fact if he was not crew compliment…. Just Walter had not been cast yet…
It's all fiction anyway. ;)
And Genesis… well, we took 120yrs to do some similar shit to Earth…but it is sci fi….
Not sure what that means.
I don't know, I thought Guinan's dialogue about the few being able to help all was pretty on point and profound when you look at it as a caretaker/watcher of a civilization. The dialogue about Rios' son is hopeful as it implies that we just might have it within us, if we combine our knowledge and focus, to do good to preserve the future. It doesn't get more Roddenberry than that to me. I'd agree that the dialogue is way too current feeling, but you could say the same for any iteration of Star Trek.
Pard’s mother “hanged” herself… not “hung” herself. And Patrick Stewart should have called that out… maybe he did…
See above. It's actually hanged not hung.
Have you seen the OS time travel episodes or TNG holodeck episodes?

And that hug… THAT HUG!!!! Seriously folks… you could contrive a way to get away with that and earn… but it falls way short.
It's kind of the ultimate thing that would make Q relatable. Sure it was silly, but it worked for he and Picard.

The bi relationship between Seven and Raffi is PC box ticking and they never really commit.. coz they are to frightened to offend hard core fans. I’m hard core… I want to be challenged…I want boundaries pushed, beliefs questioned, tropes thrown out…stretch me..:
They aren't the first LGBTQ+ relationship in Star Trek. Their lack of commitment as you call it is more due to the insecurities of their characters. That was the whole point of their relationship to me. Not all love relationships have to be drenched in sex.
Instead, the boundaries tested are patience and credibility… the beliefs questioned are “ if we move this along quick with lots of crash bang wallop, no one will care”…and the tropes….yup…lots and lots of lazy tropes rolled out to the point of being an insult imho…
That's one way of looking at it.
They have thrown millions at this….and it’s not worthy of being in the shadow of Marco Inaros’ left ear.
Wait what? Marcos who?
Sure …The Expanse has some issues….but you hang on every word……my point being, you need QC…. If a script or story idea is poor, chuck it out. Same writer screws up a few times…sack em.
I thought it was boring 🤷‍♂️
If anyone would like a photo of the list… it’s at 147….
That's over two hours if you put a minute to complaint.👀
I love you all
I hope so. Love is better than hate. :)
