Star Trek STRANGE NEW WORLDS

Do the writers not understand the basics of Nature and Nurture?
Voyager established nearly 30 years ago in the episode "Meld" that Vulcans biologically suppress their emotions, and that the mental discipline they build up is a reinforcement of those biological functions.

So yeah, while the premise of the clip is silly as hell, it's working within long-established canon.

True, but the Voyager episode "Gravity" also makes it clear that it takes years of training/discipline for Vulcans to truly gain full control over their intense emotions. Their DNA is not a magical on/off switch to their emotional state. Also, why would they all start talking using logic observations? Logic is not biological, it is a philosophy, a way of living chosen by Vulcans. Again, it takes years, decades, of education and training. Further, why would their intelligence level and ability suddenly change? Was there a galactic encyclopedia in that hypo-spray? And do we even want to talk about why everyone suddenly has a new hairstyle?

Maybe I am just a grumpy old Trekker, but to me, it is not logical. 😁 🖖

For what is worth, the thumbnail with Anson Mount's 'Johnny Bravo' style bouffant is what made me, a filthy casual, watch the trailer. Definitely goofy though. It's like they were mind-wiped and genuinely replaced rather than transfigured with their existing minds and memories.

Yeah, this is just ridiculous. Gonna need WAY more context to buy into this concept (ie. why manipulating their appearance isn't adequate for "the mission", how they can be 100% genetically modified with a single hypo and not DIE as their brains are transformed and they grow new organs; the hair, the speaking style).

There was a time when trek was fun AND logically consistent (mostly). See: DS9 s05e01; Sisko, Odo, and O'Brien all get surgery to appear Klingon, and have to rapidly create and take on a new persona (with some humourous results.) They get like a day on board a Bird of Prey to figure it all out before being thrust into [high stakes situation]. The story is fun, believable, AND serious. Sigh.

Fair points, but I imagine there will be some context in the finished episode.

Personally, I just see stuff like this as the show embracing the silliness that frequently bubbled up to the surface (intentionally or not) in TOS. Lower Decks aside, that's something that's been lacking in Star Trek since TOS.

When it's one or two episodes out of a 24 episode season, sure, but when they only give us 10 episodes, my tolerance for fluff goes way down.

For the most part, I feel the opposite. The fluff keeps me coming back, for as good as the serious episodes are I mostly just want Star Trek to be fun again.
