Star Wars IV - Edition Comparison, Please?

I would suggest looking into the D+77/D+80/OTD83 releases. Despite the name change on Jedi, they're all done by the same person (oohteedee).

The primary source he used was the 4K UHD Blu-rays, but I believe he also relied on 4K77 and some 35mm prints to restore the original shots. Ultimately, these versions are very close to the theatrical releases, though not quite as "pure" as the 4K## series. The differences are very minor and mostly focus on effects cleanup, as far as I'm aware.

Visually, the D+/OTD versions are very clean, much more so than the 4K## versions. They're not perfect—sometimes the DNR is cranked a little too high—but I still think they look very good overall. Not necessarily better than 4K##, just different.

I would recommend those for ANH and ESB, but the new Despecialized 3.1 for ROTJ which is also 4K (ANH & ESB have not been done as of yet but they’re itw)

My Despecialized versions are pretty old (v2.5 for ANH.) No matter which is best, they're probably much improved over what i have currently..

I finally looked into the 4K projects and am convinced that I want them.

What confuses me now is why they are so difficult to find! From what I have read so far, even the official website seems vague about where to find copies... more of an "ask around the forum and someone might be able to tell you where to find them" instead of there being prominently mentioned downloads and torrents all over the place on ten different file sharing sites. These projects are no secret. I'd think Lucasfilm would have shut them down years ago already if they were going to do so.
To prevent Lucasfilm coming down full throttle on them -- they used to also have James Bond/Indiana Jones/Other Franchise restorations, until something like that made them take those down -- thestarwarstrilogy.com (where the 4K restorations are) has a rule that the download link CANNOT be shared outside their forums. That rule exists for entirely valid reasons, and breaking it will get you instantly banned over there.

Joining the forum is invite only, but that's super easy because Williarob (the site founder) posted public invite keys on the Original Trilogy forums. Once you have that you can join thestarwarstrilogy.com forums, and it should be easy from there once you make an introduction post and are approved.

If you're seeking the most "theatrically authentic" versions, I'd suggest 4K77 V2.0 once that comes out (V1.4 is pretty good in the meantime) 4K80 V2.0 once that comes out (V1.0 is VERY good in the meantime), and 4K83 V2.0 (the friggin' gold standard of restoration)

I'd think Lucasfilm would have shut them down years ago already if they were going to do so.
Lucasfilm have/had fanfilm awards so that cats out of the bag…
The reality is that IF the original neg actually still exists, it’s likely to be in poor condition. 70s film stock has not aged well even compared to nitrate 40s/50s stock. I’m not aware if they did fine grain color separation protection elements either. Much if The Godfather original neg was in very condition, and Star Wars likely worse frankly likely why Disney and previously Lucasfilm were always heavily reluctant to release it… since they would have to admit it’s in bad shape… so we got a non anamorphic version of the original on dvd… woo hoo!

I believe we will get the Theatrical cut one day,..2027 is the 50th anniversary but it will likely involve AI involved restoration etc.

Grab all the versions you can….all will be closer to the original than whatever we may eventually get; of that, I’m certain!

That’s why I spent so much effort in The Godfather. The 4K has greater fidelity but the original color palate was destroyed…

Star Wars is likely to suffer a similar fate.

Is there an ETA for these? Six months? Six years?

If you PM me I can hel versions of the Versions
- I can help get a copy of the "Despecialized Editions."
- I can help get a copy of the "Silver Screen Edition."

Hi Here is my explanation of each version.

Reason to Watch each Version -
* Despecialized Edition -
Reason to Watch - Star Wars Trilogy (Original Unaltered) in 4K HD in a Fully Restored version of each Star Wars Film is the highest quality available.
* 4K77
Reason to Watch - Star Wars Trilogy (Original Unaltered) in 4K HD were seen as a Raw Theatrical experience
* Silver Screen Edition -
Reason to Watch - Star Wars Trilogy (Original Unaltered) in 2K HD were seen as a Raw Theatrical experience,
- So watch 4K 77 instead. How ever it a good version. However this version has a, smaller file size to download then 4k77.
* Special Edition Revisited
- Reason to Watch - Star Wars Trilogy (Original Unaltered) in 2K HD If you want a better HD version of the Special Edition with more Special Effects and improvements!

Differences of each Verions.

* Despecialized Edition - This is a presentation of the theatrical version of the Star Wars Trilogy. Using the Blu-rays and 4k Versions by Team Negative One.
This is meant to as if the theatrical version was restored and released in the highest quality available.
You said your main criteria is restoration of the look/feel of the theatrical version at higher quality.
This is your go to version because it a restored version of each Star Wars Film is the highest quality available.

* 4K77, 4k80, 4K83 - Team Negative One scan original Theatrical Film Print in 4K. This 4k Version is a presentation of the 3 Star Wars Films in their original unaltered state as seen in theaters. These are presented in true 4K.
4K77 differs from "Despecialized Edition." The Despecialized Edition is the theatrical Version presenting in and HD Restored quality,
4k77 is a presentation of the way the 3 Star Wars Films were seen as a Raw Theatrical experience. This has a gritty quality, no color correction.
But the benifit is 4K is the Raw original Version of Star Wars. The "Despecialized Edition" is HD quality retored versions edited together.
4K77 is the raw film print so no editing and is the raw original version.

* Silver Screen Edition - This Star Wars Episode IV in 1080p HD this the version Team Negative One created before restarting the project and restating in 4K quality and creating the 4K77 version. So watch 4K 77 instead. How ever it a good version. and it has a smaller file size then 4k77.

* Special Edition Revisited - This a revamp of the Special Editions of Star Wars Trilogy. It has better visual effects, deleted Scenes added in, Extended Yavin Battle Scenes, in Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Revisted, yoda lips move, and there are added custom created backgrounds!
Special Edition Revisited is the one if you want a better version of the Special Edition with more special effects and improvements!
