Brief Synopsis

A chronological retelling of The Usual Suspects with a more ambiguous ending.

Intention

The Usual Suspects is a great movie, but it doesn't really lend itself to multiple viewings for two reasons: a) once you know "the reveal" is coming, it will never have the same impact as the first time you saw it and b) once you know "the reveal" you feel a little betrayed because huge chunk of what you just watched never actually happened.
By structuring the movie chronologically and creating a more ambiguous ending, this fanedit is an attempt to revive the film for multiple viewings. If you liked The Usual Suspects but have only seen it once or twice and haven't felt the urge to watch it again, this fanedit is for you.


Cut-List

* rearranged the scenes to run chronologically
* removed the opening scene
* removed various lines of dialogue during Verbal's interrogation by Agent Kujan to preserve continuity
* removed original ending and created a new, more ambiguous ending

Review:

I highly enjoyed this. I'm a huge fan of The Usual Suspects and I love rewatching it. The fact that the majority of the movie is a lie amazes me to no end. I enjoy picking every scene apart as to what may have really happened.

So this edit will never truly replace the theatrical cut for me, but it was a great way to rewatch it. The chronological structure works fairly well, although it did feel like the story was dragging once we got into the interrogation. Nonetheless, it's still a great experience. I enjoyed the ambiguous ending as it lends itself to benefiting from repeat viewings and feels complete.

As for technical aspects, this is an xvid avi, so expect standard to above-standard picture quality. All the editing was excellent.

If you love The Usual Suspects I'm sure you'll dig this. If you really liked The Usual Suspects the first time you saw it but never felt like rewatching it, you'll be enthralled almost all the same as you were the first time you watched it. If you think the original ending to The Usual Suspects are the most perfect frames ever put to celluloid skip this one as you won't appreciate it one bit.

I was too inebriated to appreciate this movie when it came out, though I vaguely recall it feeling lengthy and rather talky at times in an unpleasant stage production kind of way. . . . Anyhoo, it's been a long while since I watched the original, so I went into this viewing almost virginal.

And I came out liking Adabisi's version better. (Achtung! Schpoiler alert.) Really, if Verbal was faking his physical deficits during all the time he knew his crime buddies, he'd probably have let his guard down at some point and been sniffed out. (As if the only thing keeping him from being considered a Soze candidate was his limp. He was the man with the plan, after all.) This edit fixes that problem.

And the reordering of scenes makes the movie flow a lot better, based on aforementioned fuzzy memories.

Some of the other problematic bits remain, such as Del Toro's incomprehensible accent and the Miami-Vice-style criminal meetings in very public places, but that's not Adabisi's fault--the plot can't afford their removal.

As with Adabisi's prior production, the audio and visual quality are excellent.

The original film was overrated (let the slings and arrows fly), but this version is much more watchable. Well done, Adabisi.

I liked this edit very much, but I think that you should have cut all scenes of the guy in the hospital except the one in which he first mentions Keyser Soze. The scenes about him describing what Soze looks like don't actually lead anywhere in your edit.

You're absolutely right and that's one of things I wasn't happy about in this edit - there's all the buildup with the sketch artist scenes and no payoff with the fax coming through. However, I had to include those scenes. Because of the way the interrogation scene is presented in the original, in order to present it chronologically I had to cut away from it - a lot - or it would look like a disjointed mess. Unfortunately, there's only so much footage that I can cut away to, hence it's inclusion in the edit.
